The internet is now a giant truck (Amazon Snowmobile)

Postby zjxs » Tue Dec 20, 2016 11:06 pm UTC

“The internet is not a big truck. It’s a series of tubes.”

Senator Ted Stevens, in 2006.

As Randall explained in 2013 (What-If? 0031), sneakernet has higher bandwidth than the internet. It's only logical that Amazon has realised this and is exploiting it with 100 petabyte trucks. The lag is phenomenal, but so is the bandwidth.

I'm excited about trucknet, railnet, and shipnet.

I was pretty amused that one of the big re:Invent announcements was basically AWS Truck Full O' Hard Drives.

Oh, and skynet. Turns out it's just a bunch of 777s with hard drives.
