90 Day Jane

Postby Teh Russians » Mon Feb 11, 2008 12:24 am UTC

So apparently this woman started a blog counting down from 90 days, saying she's going to kill herself in three months.
The blog is here:http://90dayjane.blogspot.com/
I call BS. What do you guys think?

Someone else did this a few months back, although her "imma gonna kill me!" site had a realtime countdown and webcam feed. Much more professional, I think.

I don't think that person ever did anything, though. At least, I never heard anything more about it after I first saw the site.

One could only hope she does it, and didn't spread her genes. I don't know where this "I wanna kill myself to get publicity" issue popped up from, but I think they should be allowed to off themselves quickly and efficiently. Enacting suicide booths would be really nice. Maybe even pay people's families a few thousand for when they do it. Eventually all the suicidal people will die off, leaving the better chunk of humanity to continue onwards. Ever seen the sliders episode with the "Lottery"?

Is suicide really a genetic thing? If it was, we could take your suggestion to the logical end, and never treat anyone with a genetic disease. We could sit around and watch all the people who get diabetes and cancer and heart disease die, and then when they are dead, we, as the better chunk of humanity, could get on with being human.

It might be genetics, it might be society. Who knows? Point remains, regardless. If she did have offspring, my thought would be that they would be considering that their mother committed suicide, "oh it all our fault", and commit suicide themselves.

As for the whole anyone with a genetic disease thing, welcome back to natural selection.

"Major depressive disorder, a clinical term for a state of intense sadness, melancholia or despair that has advanced to the point of being disruptive to an individual's social functioning and/or activities of daily living."
Thanks to Wikipedia.

My point is, depression is not someone's fault for not being happy. It is a serious problem, and while teenage angst may have increased your tolerance for sad people, let me say that if you talk about someone willing to commit suicide as if they're A horrible human being and not a victim, you have truly gone too far my friend.

Trust me. I'm a scientist.

Hmm, I thought about this topic and figured I should clarify. Whiny little emotards that want to spill their emoglobin all over the place to get attention should be left to bleed out, or helped along with a good swift kick or 2.

People that are otherwise normal and just going through a really hard time in their lives and probably would be fine with just someone to talk to and help them out, I'm all for helping.

People like the woman who claim they're going to do it at the end of 90 days, in an effort to get blog traffic, should be drawn and quartered as a reminder of what they said they were going to do, but don't.

Oh good. I expect you to lead by example. Start by revoking any medical insurance you may have. After that, I'd like you to never enter a hospital again, ever. Shortly after you've resolved to do that, stop going to supermarket. A true believer in natural selection catches his own food.

You should be able to withstand temperature extremes, too. Start sleeping outside. You can dig a den if you absolutely must, but don't use any tools you didn't make yourself. If you're not clever enough to make your own tools, you should die. Also, ditch any store-bought clothes you might have.

And for the love of the gods, stop crowding up the internet. It's only for people who have grown out of that bullshit.

I'd say it is. Although such a project could be interesting (pick a date, kill yourself on that date, do cool stuff in between), to publicise it so seems to me to be a little irrational. Then again, people have done stranger things.

Typed later, after I re-read some stuff on the site. I actually think this is pretty cool. I'm going to take her at face value, and believe that she will kill herself.

90 Day Jane wrote:I am going to kill myself in 90 days. What else should i say? This blog is not a cry for help or even to get attention. It's simply a public record of my last 90 days in existence. I'm not depressed and nothing extremely horrible has lead me to this decision. But, does it really have to? I mean, as an atheist I feel life has no greater purpose. My generation has had no great depression, no great war and our biggest obstacle is beating Halo 3. So, if I feel like saying "game over", why can't I? Anyway, I hope you enjoy my thoughts as the clock runs out.

I appreciate this. Sure, she quotes Fight Club, and she may be selfish, but if this is just a record of her last 3 months, and she is going to top herself, I say good luck to her. If I didn't have stuff I wanted to do, I would probably do something similar, although my last days would probably be quite different from hers. (Can you say $10, 000 bank loan and a ticket to Rarotonga?)

Edit: The comments are also pretty funny. I think a lot of them are written by attention whores themselves, because they are [sadly, pretty standard for the internet].

I dont, I dont, and I try to avoid it, but local laws prevent me from killing game whenever I'm hungry. I can stand extreme temperatures just fine, and I know how to make my own tools. I make it a point, in case of uberwar. As for store bought clothes, if it's natural in the current environment, only a retarded animal would shun them. :P

A tyrannosaurus rex once told me that:
I suppose the idea of remarkability ties in with a desire for fame, which I SUSPECT is merely a corruption of wanting to be respected.

I think this applies to 90 Day Jane. (How so?) Well, as you ask; there is something apparent in writing a blog; you know it is read by people, people who have reactions and give attention. If she really wanted to record the last 90 days of her life, there is such thing as a diary. It can be written on paper, or word processor, or on walls in your own choice of ink. The only reason you would choose public publishing over those options is to garner attention.

She's an attention whore who wants a famous death because her life was not remarkable enough for her own liking.

This desire for fame is, as the green dinosaur said, a corruption of wanting respect. I don't know her, so I'm not going to guess how much respect she is shown. Actually I am going to guess: presumably very little.

I dare say she will be too disappointed if I don't revisit that blog in the next 85-10000 days. Not that I would take an Ebenezer Scrooge stance on this issue... ("If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population")

How humanist of me

So is medical care. It's one of the many ways we lift ourselves above natural selection, which would be the dream-goal of any animal that could conceptualize it.

Natural selection has nothing to do with whether we live in a "natural" or "artificial" environment.

Also, natural selection is likely to be stronger now than ever among humans. But it is not adapting humanity for life in the stone age. Because we do not live in the stone age.

Oh, come now. The Internet is rife with attention whores - this is just one more. It's not even particularly original attention-whoring. Couldn't she just get a Myspace page and put up some slutty pics and let the guys fill that gaping void of insecurity at the center of her being?

I find this 90 Day project very interesting.
It will give some insight into a real person's thoughts and actions in the prospect of willfully chosen death.
If the blog is fake I will see it as an interactive, multimedia narration project which deserves respect in it's own way, and has it's own truth.
It's fascinating. I wanna write a story about a girl like her. Like... the story that I expected to read when I opened 'Veronica decides to die' by Coelho.

I only wish there weren't so many people out there who think that they will achieve something by calling this person an attention whore or similar things. Can't they put their energy into something more constructive?

I found (rather, someone on b3ta has remembered about) this. Done by Chris Morris of Brass Eye, it was a series of columns supposedly about a man about to kill himself. It raised a few complaints at the time.

Now maybe this time it's for real, but I don't buy it.

There's, what, 83 days left?

I'm a-gonna start my own blog. It's called 82-day-Felstaff, and I plan to find, and murder, 90-Day-Jane before her 90 days is up.

I believe I get 10 ManPoints™ for dropping a grand piano on her head.

To paraphrase ArthurL's idea, here is my mission statement:

I am going to kill 90-Day Jane in 83 days. What else should i say? This blog is certainly a cry for help and even to get attention. It's simply a public record of her last 90 days in existence. I'm totally psyched and lots of extremely awesome ideas have lead me to this decision. But, does it really have to? I mean, as a well-meaning homocidal citizen I feel life has got greater purpose than bludgeoning an attention whore to death with a small South American pygmy goat. My generation has had no great depression, no great war and our biggest obstacle is beating Jane silly with the Hammer of Sensibility. So, if I feel like saying "game over, Jane", why can't I? Anyway, I hope you enjoy my thoughts as her clock runs out. Also, if blogspot takes this down before i'm gone just go to http://www.90dayjane.com and say: "Jane, where do you live? And how susceptible to electric cattle prods are you?". Please don't attempt to "help" her. If you want to truly help, please send me ideas on how to do the deed. thx-Felstaff

I saw a post on there earlier today saying that it was meant as an art piece that eventually got out of hand when other people found it. I don't think it was meant to be quite as public as it was. I'm a little surprised that it got yanked so soon though. I'd have expected it to stay up for at least a couple days explaining it.

Too much liability in keeping something like that around, fake or not. 'Merica being 'Merica, someone'll sue someone if some asshat offs themselves after posting about it on a publicly accessible site thing like that.

....

Don't ask me how Livejournal's still around.

I thought it was a promo for a movie...remember the one movie with the site that has a needle delivering a toxin at a rate proportional to the site's current number of viewers? That's what I thought this was.

That said, the social experiment element of it all makes the comments that I read fall once again into that small region of what is perhaps both funny and sad, as the whole "would that old newscaster have found solace or more isolation" thing reminds me of how the internet makes me depressed in terms of the state of (bored?) humanity in general.

Like making a spectacle of myself on the internet before offing myself in a public fashion? ;)
They add to it unneccessarily.
