So sad. I'd always hoped to see him live. He was a genius, and will be sorely missed.

Edit: matter of fact, I believe I had a daydream just the other day of meeting him on an airplane and thanking him for the succinct and humorous way he presented atheism.

Also, was the thread title taken from the Big Lebowski? If so, then vodka.cobra, you are my hero.

Excuse me, is there any reason why all the good and honest people in this world keep dying while the morons keep running it and not dying? I can only believe that Sith Lords are real so much. And you'll never convince me that Bush is the apprentice.

Other than that I think I'm going to go cry now.

No, but Carter acquitted himself in his work post-presidency

Gerald Ford's main sin was saving Nixon's ass, and he never forgave himself for it. Thompson noted that he'd tell his golf buddies that he knew he was going to hell, because he pardoned Nixon. He left a posthumous indictment of the current administration behind him, and I think he's earned some modicum of dignity and respect.

On the other hand, Ronald Reagan's death is the only one in this decade that I can think of at the moment that came with my approval.

He was a great champion for freedom of speech and freedom of expression, one of the greatest comedians ever, and one hell of a brilliant guy. Also, I had the honour of seeing him perform live once in my life, and it's an experience I've always cherished.

May his soul Frisbee be flung onto the nicest roof in the entire neighbourhood.

It's really thrown off my night, reading about him dying. I've spent over half my life listening to him, since I was 10. As such, obviously, he was a large influence on my intellectual development. So yea, I'm more than mildly upset right now.

While I never got the chance to meet him personally, I am extremely glad I got the opportunity to watch him perform live a couple times. One time, I was third-row center! That was a great night for me.

Goodbye George, and thank you. You will be missed.

It seems like he was the last of a breed - Bill Hicks, Lenny Bruce and George. People who spoke the truth and made it funny. The world will truly seem a bit less bright now.

What shitty news to get first thing in the morning. I can remember being 9 or 10 and listening to some records of George Carlin. Of course, I didn't understand everything he was saying, but there was just something about him that really captured me. And as I got older and really understand his material, I enjoyed him even more. I'm glad I finally got the chance to see him a few years ago. I'd been wanting to try and see him again. Now I wish I'd tried harder.

This got me seriously bummed out today. He was one of the last great american standups. Smart, rude and funny. He will be sorely missed. :(

I'm keeping him in my thoughts, right between "My ass hurts in this chair" and "Let's fuck the waitress".

...CRAP.

He was my favorite comedian. And the first thing I thought of when i read "Passed away" is "He's gonna be pissed off that they said that." I could seriously imagine him saying "It's DEAD you morons! I'm fucking DEAD!" His whole euphemisms skit is coming back to me now...

I wasn't too broken up about Strom Thurmond, either.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

Strom Thurmond died in 1997. Disney's animatronics lab kept his husk going for just long enough to carry out his last term.

For the record, I would just like to state that the George Carlin, Lenny Bruce mindset on words is one that has always interested me, and in many ways I agree with. I am not for censorship. I am, however a believer that swear words should be used with purpose. Saying "I need a fucking apple" is entirely vulgar and uncecessary. On the other hand saying "I hate this fucking war" is appropriate and should be a socially acceptable use of the term.
It shouldn't be diluted by excessive use, but rather be acceptable as a word that is useful, instead of useless as it's becoming, when you mean something particularly strongly.

How do you honor the memory of a man who thought that the mourning process was bullshit?

I can't guarantee that he'd be with us in all of this, but it's pretty fucking close.

Cat: If you're a comedian, your biggest assets are content, cadence, and intensity. (Some comedians, in their spurious wisdom omit one). The latter two are altered by the use of four letter words, which act both as intensifiers but as musical/rhythmic devices in the same vein as alliteration, etc.

And in the end, as a performer, or shit, as a communicator in general, the only real question to be asked is, "did I do my job." If Obama were to get up tomorrow and make the political networks opt for time delay, he wouldn't be doing his job, no matter how much I would blow ANYONE who I wouldn't be permanently infected by for the public at large to calm the fuck down about words like "obscenity" and "indecency." (here we're not talking about it in the sense that "I'm a Senator and this is what my constituents hired me to do so much as "This is what my communication seeks to accomplish) If George Carlin makes us laugh and makes us think such that it ruins our day/week/whatever to hear that he's died, then he did his fucking job and we should build a goddamn shrine in his honor.

To mourn Mitch Hedberg, some friends and I bought a pineapple and some Reese's cups and topped the cups with Scooby Doo cake topper candies. Then we stuck candles in, lit them, and stood in a circle and told many of his jokes.

Legend has it, a student of the high school we did this found the pineapple we had laid to rest at the foot of a tree, and used it for a cake in home ec.
