I Just Fucking Google'd It.

Also: AAARGH WHAT THE HELL THREAD TITLE PLEASE NO.

...this stupid "2kx" crap, which presumably evolved from resistor labelling? Which means that I read "2k1" as 2100.

Sorry, miniature rant there. I'll move along now.

Umm, resistor labeling? No, k, being the metric for 1000. Therefore read 2 thousand 1.

Interesting findings:
-A really stupid email I supposedly wrote to someone, that they posted on their website. I don't remember it, and it certainly isn't my writing style even back then, but it's listed under my address. O_o
-There were a few different products named iPhone and IPhone, and all sorts of acronyms of WII.
-Ayumi Hamasaki: 13,000 -> 2,610,000
-"Over 9000" was used to refer to things that were actually more than 9000.
-Afghanistan was a travel destination!
-Cheezburger: 22 -> 1,430,000
-goatse: 1,400 -> 593,000
-Ubuntu was a few things, but they weren't Linux
-Vista ran on Windows
-Pokemon: 1,440,000 -> 82,600,000

I think that people are forgetting that the causes of many of the increases in Google hits is that A) Google has increased and improved its indexing and B) The internet is just plain more accessible and popular today than it was in 2001.

What other explanations have been given?

It seems like people are implicitly expressing how *things* were less popular in 2001, while most often, it's their exposure (specifically, exposure on the internet) that was lacking.

Examples:

Well yeah, those things were less popular, in part because there was less exposure and less pages on them or because they hadn't been invented yet or weren't popular at the time.

And gets 3 million hits now.

Hmm, I wonder why Google isn't prescient? Surely somebody should have seen the attacks coming nine months before they happened, right?

http://www.google.com/search2001/search ... gle+Search
compare http://www.google.com.au/search?q=steam ... =firefox-a

I knew it was a rising phenomena!

EDIT: By the way, by comparing the number of hits for things like 'a' and 'e' on both indexes, the number of pages google hits seems to have inflated by a factor of 40-50, so account for that in your comparison searches
