From the stories I've heard, in some places the 50s never really left.

As an aside, it was really awkward, I kept on seeing the red losing, and I'm used to red meaning the liberal party, so I'm like "Aw crap! Why would these guys keep voting for those idiots?" before realising blue = democrat.

It means that we Americans haven't gotten completely past the "racist stage". You being British makes it understandable that you might not know this.

Not to mention that the UK is most certainly not "past that racist stage" yet, either. Are you kidding me?

Every time I visit my family there I have to put up with so much garbage. I get sick of not being able to ride buses in London (which is supposed to be all uber-cosmopolitan!) without being called an f'ing paki.

... that aside, yeah. I fully admit that in addition to my elation that someone (hopefully!) competent won, I also have elation that a black person won. The only people who can afford to claim they are "colorblind" are, generally, white people who are not affected by racism. For the rest of us, steps like this are a really big deal.

I spent pretty much all night glued to the TV, and my entire dorm literally broke out into cheers and excited screaming when the results became official. My friend in New York called at the same exact moment just so we could yell excitedly at each other for a few minutes before she had to go to bed. Around midnight a massive parade/riot of joy sprung up in which people marched about five miles or so from campus to downtown, chanting the whole way. It's wonderful to realize that for once my state/my school/I was actually in agreement with the majority of the country. Perhaps I'm still a little too excited about it, but I honestly feel like this has done something good for our generation (and the country, of course).
I'm insanely jealous of you. I was sequestered in my dorm room by myself in front of my tv and computer because I knew that if I had tried to start an impromptu parade that I would have been pretty much the only one.

I hate living in a deeply red state.

I think most of the people in my Dorm wanted Obama, well probably the school, since its UNT (A school known for good art department, and an amazing music program) so there's lots and lots of liberal people running around (makes for some really awesome/deep bumper stickers too!)

There was quite a bit more yelling than usual out side, but no crazy parade or anything. Then again UNT is in the middle of nowhere so there's not really much else to be done here.

Did you really say that? Since when are women a minority?

Paranoid Android wrote:edit: Ive only been to the US once so I dont really know what the racism situation is over there.

It's not really something you would easily see for yourself, not anymore. There has been a LOT of progress since the civil rights days. But if you pay attention there are still signs of racism in many places. It's definitely something you could spend a few weeks, months, years even in the country without noticing, if you stay away from the news and stay in the nicer areas.

And it certainly isn't random and arbitrary. An appropriately dressed Mexican person walks into a nice restaurant and no one will bat an eye, business as usual. But when it comes to issues like illegal immigration and gang control (referring to California here), you'll find plenty of questionable logic and actions. Not to mention if you go into some of the worse parts of LA, racial rivalry mixed with gang rivalry is pretty bad. But even we locals avoid going to such places if we can help it, so much of it is avoidable in that sense.

In the sociological, not the numerical, sense. Which is the relevant sense, given that it wouldn't matter at all for this discussion how many black people there are in the US if they weren't also oppressed. Remember, the upper class is in the numerical minority. Who's oppressed?

Speaking of Commander in Cheif, that should probably be a seperate electable office, with a two year term, with the decision to go to war still resting with congress (and less appropriately but more probably with the president).

It is absurd to assume that someone who has spent their life on legal issues would be the best choice for the overall commander of the military, just as it is absurd to assume that someone whose life has been spent solely in the military would make a good politician. There is no reason members of one group can't be good at working within another, but the assumption that they will is flawed.

Anyways, I'm quite happy... except for the ballot measures that passed in Florida, those were kind of pathetic.

I haven't heard anyone complaining about Race, but I have been seeing a lot of "Welcome to the USSA" and random socialism things and stuff. I can't sift through the bumper stickers on face book now without running into it.

I wish I could compare stuff from 2004 to stuff now just to see which side is more asinine over losing.

It's true. If you have the sound editing program Audacity, and amplify enough, that white noise you always have to edit out is the sound of that sigh still reverberating.

Also, I figured out I can use my headphones as a mic, so I'm going to record Obama audio onto my computer and try to make it sound ridiculous for practice, if I can.

the way i see it, the fact that about 95% of the media i have read calls him 'the first black president' in the first paragraph shows that, well, you are.

he is in no way related to the slaves or people who were subject to racist laws prior to the civil rights movement. he is a first generation kenyan/american who was raised in hawaii and indonesia, (neither location would have put him on the recieving end of a huge ammount of racism as far as i am aware) by his white mother then white grandparents. if you look at him purely in terms of skin color, he has just as many white parents as black ones.

what exactly makes him more black than white?
