Ladies And Gentlemen, we know who the winner will probably be?

It looks pretty probable now. Ohio, Pennsylvania... It's not concession time yet, but I think it's close. :)

It's almost certainly the case, but still, let's at least have the politeness to wait.

It's over. Some crazy like California going for McCain would have to happen at this point. With PA and OH, Obama has enough safe states left to take it.

Ugh, I'm depressed now...

But I don't understand how they call states when not even 30% of the precincts are reporting in...

Yeah, I've always had a problem with "calling" election results in the US. Especially when everyone gets worked up about "CNN IS CALLING STATE X FOR CANDIDATE Y!!!!!"

Between that kind of crap and this, the US seriously needs election monitors. Like, with that blue finger dye. Seriously.

But, yeah, I'm happy it's going the right way.

FiveThirtyEight's "safe" designation is >99.5% projected chance to win. That's pretty darn safe in my book.

While I don't really like calling elections based on exit polling and stuff either...

I knew it was over when Obama won Penn. I've been saying Penn was the key for months.

Does anyone know where one can look at the results by county? I really dislike that my state is an all or nothing affair.

http://www.nytimes.com has a state tab and a county tab.

A preliminary projection of chickens indicates that we will have more than 270, once they hatch!

Well, I guess driving 600 miles (there and back) paid off, even if the state I'm in was red. (my county though was blue :D)

I just switched from CNN, where one of the black newscasters is talking about how much hope he has for his kids and the next generation... to Fox News, where they're talking about how maybe we'll finally figure out who Obama is, because clearly we don't know him well enough. I went back to CNN fast.

YAY OBAMA!!!

Well, my very large and red elephant friend is quite pissed. I must give him some peanuts or something.

*gives applause for next prez*

My parents are sort of mad he won. My mom is saying that all the African-Americans will be lining up outside the white house for their hand-outs. This is just my mother's racist upbringing, I do not believe in it. She has been racist through-out this whole election. tut tut

Fuck no the craziness in't over. We're just getting started.

...Actually, my fears have immediately switched from "Obama will lose the election tonight" to "Obama will be assassinated while he is giving his acceptance speech tonight."

Also to "there will be some sort of riot on my campus tonight."

Counting based on any understanding of statistics, and discounting bizzare parallel universes where California votes Republican, Obama is it.

What remains is to see how many Senate seats the Democrats get (probably less than 60) and if Ted Stevens is kicked out of Alaska (Magic 8 ball says Signs Point to Yes).

I'm largely interested in where the Republican party goes from here. I'm predicting a major schisim over the next 4 years, effectively splitting the party between social and fiscal conservatives, with a possible push for getting the presidential election based on something other than plurality voting (thus making thrid party candidates viable). In any case, it's unlikely they'll have things worked out in time for 2012.

And, McCain's conceded. And he's making a pretty decent speech about it.

Anywhere online it can be watched (that isn't CNN, which won't stream to non-Americans)?

Edit: Turns out this computer doesn't have sound anyway so meh.

No idea. I'm listening to it on NPR. I imagine that YouTube'll have it pretty soon, if nothing else.

It is a good speech. At least it was until he mentioned Palin. But his tribute to Obama and efforts to being the country together were pretty admirable. I'm willing to bet it's genuine rather than lip service, unlike the majority of his campaign.

I'm unhappy with the results, but I congratulate Mr. Obama on his victory.

Let's just all "hope" (lol :) ) that it was the right choice.

I feel so bad for Palin... McCain's giving his concession speech and Alaska's polls still haven't closed.
/weep

Don't forget y'all! Bush still has power for two more months! Maybe McCain still has a shot, if the conspiracy theorists have their way!
/wrong

As for Obama, I really like the guy, I just pray to God he doesn't **** something up. That would be a major setback for more than himself.

Woot for Barack!

The cynical reading, of course, is that he's pulling a "But Obama is a reasonable man!"

Though the "Americans never hide from history" line right at the end had me wincing.
