Debranded McDonalds

Postby Klapaucius » Wed Nov 12, 2008 1:30 am UTC

Link.

Several McDonald's restaurants opened up in Tokyo which, at least visibly, have nothing to do with McDonald's. They call themselves "Quarter Pounder" and though you seem to be able to order fries and drinks, the only item on the actual menu is a Quarter Pounder.

I hope Quarter Pounder comes to the US. I could use a Quarter Pounder, but I am too easily distracted by freedom of variety and the color yellow.

I guess I'm never eating there. I don't like QPs. :\

What a strange idea. Anyone have any inside knowledge (shareholders, mayhap) as to why they're doing this?

Maybe it's similar to Microsoft's Mojave thing?

Maybe, but I doubt it. The Quarter Pounder is kinda synonymous with McDonalds, like the Whopper with Burger King.

I think they're trying to aim towards the trendy individuals who eat nothing but QPs when they go to the fast food chain, and buy bottled water in a glass bottle, and think that its uncool to be seen at any restaurant with a name you can pronounce, that has more than one location. The same people those pretentious mac commercials seem to aim for. That and starbucks.

Soon, you too, can join the ranks of the QP Community. Because we all know that trendy people make communities around various products, making it uncool to be seen anywhere else.

I would call it anti-branding branding, making an impression by not making an impression, but still, other than that I see no logical reason why anyone would do this.

Still, its Japan. I kinda take things from the landof the Rising Sun with a skewed view.

Didn't Jack in the Box already try this, and fail miserably? Oh well, I guess when you're a corporate entity desperately trying to be hip there's only so much you can do...

It's probably so that the Green Lantern has somewhere to go when he wants McDonalds.

That's completely different. "JBX Grill", according to the wiki, involved a "high-quality, cafe-style" atmosphere, including modern architecture (a fireplace) and an entirely new menu. Quarter Pounder is a storefront with little decoration (besides a coat of paint) and a menu that consists only of something a regular McDonald's already sells.

Also: no choice means a much shorter wait time. "Quarter Pounder." "Next!" "Quarter Pounder."

... This might actually be the reason. You'd could use even fewer workers than usual, as well.

RTFA. A comment (one of only three comments, so there's no excuse to not read them) says that the Quarter Pounder was only recently introduced to Japan.

It's an advertising campaign, Mojave-style. If you don't like any of McDonald's current offerings, you probably wouldn't be inclined to go in to a McDonald's to try their newly-introduced (in Japan) Quarter Pounder. So they're separating out the burger to get people to try it in a setting sanitized from McDonalds' image.

Another precedent is the Pepsi Challenge.

I know this, but I don't want to believe it. I want to keep my vision of a minimalist future where everyone eats at Quarter Pounder, Whopper, and Frappucino, with clothes from T-Shirt and Sneakers, a future where my children can go to Excellent Engineering Programs University and become doctors at Minimal Scarring, bankers for Low Interest Mortgages (if it survived the financial crisis) or of course engineers for an upstart called Small but Tangible Improvements on Existing Products #8630.

I think "Drunk as hell and got the munchies?" would be a better sell than the "Quarter Pounder" typeface.

Except that everyone knows that Quarter Pounder with Cheese is a much better restaurant and that T-Shirt, Pants, and Shoes is the better clothing store.

Careful. You're nearing the dangerous inevitability of options.

I would've thought that a store that sells pants would be a necessary addition to T-Shirt and Shoes. Unless pants aren't needed in the future...

So you're saying that "Pants aren't needed now" is a given axiom?

Sure, it's obvious, but it requires proof. Pretend I'm a Heptapod.

You are not going to need pants, because it's not cold and nobody you're not fine with seeing you is going to see you, and we say so.

Therefore, pants are not needed now. QED

I don't know where the hell you are but it's cold as hell in North Carolina, which means it's probably cold as hell in all non-Florida places (in the US that is)

But the store was called T-Shirt and Shoes, not T-Shirt, Shoes, and Kilts. Kilts aren't needed/wanted in the future/present either.
