Sounds about right. Income inequality is a big issue for Dems in part because the states where Dems most often win tend to be the ones that are most unequal.

Presumably because Democrat states tend to be wealthier and more developed, so the very rich live there? Which also makes housing more expensive, increasing homelessness.

The thing that surprised me was the sharp disparity between two very wealthy Democratic coastal states. Why would ny spend twice as much California on sheltering the homeless? Am I assuming people care more, or is this merely bureaucratic inertia that ny mandated this decades ago, and nobody noticed.

Probably not the only factor, but possibly because NY is much colder than CA so sheltering the homeless is much more urgent?

Ninja'd

No, it's because New York freezes over in the winter and swelters in the summer, while California has decent weather year-round. If California doesn't pay for the homeless, they end up in tent cities. If NY doesn't pay for the homeless, they end up in prisons and hospitals.

Though if NY is spending $17k/yr, wouldn't it be cheaper to house these people in upstate NY where the rents are $500/month, while simultaneously lowering rents for everyone in NYC slightly by replacing the shelters with apartments?

You know homeless people still work, have families, have local ties, and might, you know, want to stay in a place where they can find jobs and things, right? They're not cattle that you just move from place to place because it's inconvenient.

Are we including couch-surfers as part of the homeless population?

You're being flippant, but the answer heavily depends on the study. These nuances matter because a homeless population (and the resources to combat it) can vary.
I do remember that study about solving homelessness by giving them homes and still saving money. Haven't heard much about it since then.

You mean tourists or people who actually don't have a home of their own but manage to find friends or family to house them instead of being on the street? The former - no. The latter - yeah, of course. How is that relevant to my comment?

Also, dumping a large population of the under or un employed on a rural area (cause that’s where rents in upstate NY are low) will only stress local services beyond capacity. Not to mention the lack of jobs. Which is why rents are low in the first place.
The program in Utah found that focusing on the people who needed the most support was the most cost effective. By housing people and helping them stay healthy they kept them from the ER and jail, a huge savings.

Not entirely flippant. From what I understand, the ones with family ties, jobs, etc, are most likely living on their friends'/families' sofas until they find a more permanent solution, in which case money isn't really being spent on sheltering them. The ones in the shelters tend to be the ones with the fewest family ties and so forth keeping them in a particular place.

And so obviously it's ethically OK to forcefully move them hundreds of miles because it will save some money!

1) It's what actually happened in the 90's in NY state, minus the funds being sent upstate with them. Guilliani rounded up all the Bowery Bums and sent them to the nice farms upstate, which is just one in a long list of reasons the rest of NY despises NYC
2) Never suggested it would be forced
3) If the options are "ship them upstate" and "underserve them entirely", then shipping them upstate is the less unethical option

No, they just get underserved in a different place. Not to mention the hostility of the locals at having this new population arrive en masse.

1. Are you saying it's OK then? Or it's not OK? What's the point of mentioning this?
2. True, you didn't say "forcibly remove", it was just strongly implied when you said "house these people" as something that's done to them instead of something they choose to do.
3. Wait so now you are literally saying to ship them like cattle?

Specifically, the responses towards the people, not the situations and the people themselves. Refugees were always a type of homeless people, though with some crucial differences obviously. Your response in particular reminded me of some of the anti-immigration responses, is all.

This for example, like, there's no reason to bring up that Zohar "reminds you of some of the anti-immigration responses" unless you're a) trying to imply an anti-immigration/anti-homeless tone in Zohar's posts, or b) you're just talking shit that you have no idea about. I wouldn't be surprised if its b, because for years now that's what you've been doing on these forums

Now I could see a program that offered tax breaks to small industry that opened in poor areas, with some of the jobs going to people who volunteered to move into those areas otherwise loosing population, with funding for services shifted from NYC to Herkimer or New Paltz or Miller’s Kill or wherever. Bonus points for anyone who does farm work.
Wait-weren’t the homeless poor supposed to flock to the opportunity to do the labor of the displaced “illegal immigrant” migrant population? And didn’t much of Florida’s tomato crop rot in the fields this year?

The crops ripened and rotted in just 3 days?! :P

According to my google-fu, it was two years ago, and it was due to good weather and such causing a glut in the market.

Unless you are referring to this thing from last year; no idea if me.me is actually a credible version of Snopes or not.

If it's part of a comprehensive solution that provides viable alternatives to get out of poverty while keeping the existing infrastructure in place to support homeless people in NYC, then yeah, of course there's stuff you can do. But, surprise, it may be more complicated then "Put all the Jews homeless on trains"

(Six weeks is good enough re:double-posting, I'm sure.)

Semi-identical twins. Only the second pair ever recorded (though there's normally no reason to check, even now when we can do, so doubtless it's occurred at other times with both assumed fraternal and identical siblings.

Noting that the assumptions of triploid-fertilisation and then ovum splitting is different from some of the prior hypothetical of an ovum first splitting then each of the ova fertilising. Perhaps influenced by the 2007 sesquizygotic pair exhibiting chimeric qualities. Though as the everyday chimeric mechanism itself isn't tied down yet…

https://www.npr.org/2019/03/20/70481801 ... technology
The race to build the next generation of super-fast mobile-data networks has begun in Germany, which started auctioning off its spectrum licenses for 5G on Tuesday.

But this highly technical event has become the center of a geopolitical storm between the U.S. and China, with Europe caught in the middle.

The Trump administration insists that Chinese firm Huawei, which makes 5G technology, could hand over data to the Chinese government. The U.S. has warned European allies, including Germany, Hungary and Poland, to ban Huawei from its 5G network or risk losing access to intelligence-sharing.

US continues to lose ground to Chinese government backed Huawei. Given how central data is to our lives, it's akin to letting the Chinese control the GPS satellites. Most of the time it's ok, but when tensions rise, shenanigans will give China an edge.

Tldr Huawei is the backbone to the 5g network, and China can and will use it to spy on anything and everything.

Would be super horrible to live in a world where foreign powers spy on anything and everything, or control the GPS satellites. I don't know how we would survive.

edit: overly sarcastic, sorry. The US is getting rather heavy-handed in its demands, lately. The Iran deal, this Huawei stuff, Trump's trade war, the threatened Nordstream 2 sanctions. It's very one-sided. If the US becomes less reliable as an ally, we'll need better relationships with the rest of the world.

I missed this story last week. Apparently, Black mothers have gone to jail for claiming to live in a different public school district, so that their kids could attend better elementary schools. That story briefly re-surfaced while attention was being paid to the white celebrity moms who helped their kids cheat their way into elite universities. Thus, this:

Interesting comparison. The first two, IIRC, had defrauded government. The second two, defrauded a private institution (and arguably some other more deserving teenager). Allegedly. Not sure jail time was appropriate in any of the cases.

I'd say the white people in that case were wirse, actually. Lying to attend a different public school doesnt really harm the other kids at the school, so long as it doesn't happen so much that the school becomes overcrowded. Lying to get in to harvard results in some other kid not getting in, and that is active harm.

What the fuck kind of sentence is 9 days jail time? Thats enough to disrupt a life long term...and thats about it. There is zero benefit to a sentence like that except to screw people. Any jail time for this is frankly stupid but you cant even pretend this is done to rehabilitate or deter people. All this did was likely ruin the mother’s life AND cost tax payers more money.

This story has everything: the rich and famous, lots of bad things happening to bad people and RICO violations!

...

Number Three: concealing the nature and source of these bribery payments by funnelling the payments through the KWF charitable foundation account.

...

Of course, most or all of these bribery payments were labelled as charitable contributions, so essentially these million-dollar bribes were subsidised by the Federal Government.

...

Aunt Becky spent millions of dollars on bribes and fraudulent payments to get her kids into college, got to write all of that amount off as a charitable deduction, which effectively cuts the cost in half, subsidised by other tax-payers, and got a letter saying that she was helping disadvantaged youth. Do you want class riots? Because this is how you get class riots!
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.
