Rofl at landfishseakitten, and again at wetpussies. And now I'm craving tuna steak. Seared both sides, raw in the middle, served with sauteed kankong and a little mash. And a glass of Clonakilla Viognier...

Well, our gold fish like to be petted (sorta) and get all eager and nibble our fingers when we go to feed them.

Next question: what do you call a dogfish? or a whale shark?

Overfishing is a serious issue, but you are not helping people get convinced about that by pulling up moronic stunts like this.

Also, props for the "fish are as cute as kittens, so we should not kill them" line of argumentation - because, you know, that is totally the right way to approach the problem[/sarcasm]

Overfishing is only a major issue because there won't be any fish to catch tomorrow.
PETA's beef with fishing is the fact that fish die. Any level of fishing to a PETA member would be too much fishing.

Would they settle for having fishes called 'sea-critters'?

A friend of mine went to the website today and made her own sea-kitten. Then she named it "Lunch".

Obviously, given their cuddly and slow-moving behaviour, they are watersloths.
Actually, because a lion would now be a land shark, a sea lion is now a sea land shark.
Rottweilers are land sharks in police parlance. Term already taken.

Well, it's the best Aussie Viognier going, so props. Very good choice. But damn it, get a real Rhone wine, and enjoy it properly :) Condrieu is the way to go.

And sea lions? We call them "Land Sea Lions." I tame them.

Oh, PETA...How effective can a campaign really be when most people had to check the URL to make sure this wasn't a troll? I don't think it really helped that the "sea kitten facts" sounded like they were written by a guy who knew exactly how stupid the whole concept was.

PETA wrote:Some sea kittens tend well-kept gardens. They encourage the growth of tasty algae and weed out the types that they don't like. It is particularly tragic when people eat these sea kittens, as their precious little gardens become wild and overgrown in their absence.

Sea kittens talk to each other through squeaks, squeals, and other low-frequency sounds that humans can only hear through special instruments. Most ichthyologists—scientists who specialize in sea kitten biology—agree that this is just about the cutest thing ever.

Contrary to popular belief, the technical term for sea kitten offspring is "baby sea kitties," not "caviar." Many sea kittens build nests where they can raise their baby sea kitties, and others collect small rocks off the sea floor to make widdle hiding pwaces where they can rest.

A little tongue in cheek, no?

There's already a creature called the catfish, is that now the sea catkitten?

Also, are we going to have to change all the tuna labels to read Kitten of the Sea?

What a load of carp.

If you want me to take your views seriously, don't be a dick and talk to me like a 3rd grader. PETA committed organizational suicide with this, if they haven't already.

They won me over. I'm totally calling 'em sea kittens now. That's the most awesome thing I've heard in months. Still gonna eat fish of course, but damn, that's so awesome.

PETA's so freaking silly. I don't see why they bother any more. I don't think any cares about PETA.

whaba- whoba- wha-

*sigh* oh, lawdy. PETA never fails to amuse. at least until i remember that these people are ACTUALLY SERIOUS ABOUT THIS SHIT. that just makes me sad.

i love their inspirational stories, especially Tara the Tuna:

PETA wrote:Tara the Tuna is frisky
and playful, and she
loves to squeeze herself
into tight spaces and
snuggle up close to her
sea kitten pals.

But the conditions on the
sea kitten factory farm
where she lives are too
cramped even for Tara.
With no room to swim and
no chance for escape, Tata
looks forward to the end.

first i was like :D . then i was like  . then, i  'd.
i have a friend who i think belongs to PETA, although i have no classes with her this year. i'll have to ask her to explain this some day.
Look at me still talking when there's SCIENCE to do!

Somehow it seems that not even the members of PETA are taking it seriously anymore.

I say we spam the site and start naming the sea kittens after food. Sashimi, Sushi, Tuna Steak, Fish n' Chips, Lobster Dinner, Crabroll, Shrimp Cocktail... :: slobbers a little ::

Except now that all his sea kitten friends are just calling him the shitty kittie, he just can't catch a break.

You know, if overfishing in Korea gets worse because of this whole 'Sea Kittens' campaign, PETA should be held responsible.

Wow, and to think, PETA could be doing something like trying to generate media attention and funds for aquaculture and fish farms, and educating the public about overfishing, and encouraging sustainable business practices in ways that don't make me want to vomit.

But instead, Sea Kittens.

Fuck you, PETA. You make people like me look stupid just for being an environmentalist.

Wait, so all fish are to be called Sea Kittens? o_O How are we supposed to tell the different species of sea kittens apart then? Also, spearfish are not cuddly. :\ And sharks aren't fish, but I don't think PETA has figured that much out yet. Oh, and that more bacteria die by human hand every minute than fish in a year. Okay, to be fair, PETA aren't an environmentalist organization. They are (ostensibly) an animal rights organization, and are therefore not in the business of promoting sustainable fishing*. Instead they would by trying to stop the killing of fish altogether.

With the Spearfish High School, fish can be singular or plural, so they could change their name to "Spear Sea Kittens High School".

So, anyone want to join me in battering, then deep frying some sea kittens?

Edit: I've just looked a the "Create your own sea kitten" section of the website. My brain is now hurting. Dresses and lipstick are bad enough, but could someone explain why the hell a "sea kitten" would need a water bowl?

I always thought PETA was serious about the stuff they campaign for(no matter how much I dislike them), but this looks more like a joke than anything else:

from the website:
Of course, if you look at it another way, what all this really means is that fish need to fire their PR guy—stat. Whoever was in charge of creating a positive image for fish needs to go right back to working on the Britney Spears account and leave our scaly little friends alone. You've done enough damage, buddy. We've got it from here. And we're going to start by retiring the old name for good. When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover. And who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?

It reads tongue in cheek, almost as if they're mocking themselves. Another possibility is that the website is marketed towards younger children. Which would make more sense, as what adult would latch onto the word "sea kitten"?

Or someone has a sense of humor. Who knows?

There was a town that was turning into them in The Shadow over Innsmouth, through a combination of elder magic and inter-species sexin'. They played in the ruins of the ancient sea land dolphins and worshipped Mother Hydra and Father Cthulhu, whose new nomenclature is completely unknown.

Thing is... just by the existance of this site, PETA are essentially claiming that "Because they're cute" is a major reason for why you shouldn't eat animals... and thus, implying that eating animals that aren't cute is OK, or at least, less evil. Which, of course, only hurts their main goal.

It happens depressingly often, and PETA do it all the time... a group holds rational-but-subjective principle A [Killing animals is wrong]. This principle has implication B [Fishing is wrong], that they'd like everyone to follow. But rather than use some kind of reasoned debate about principle A, they give an emotional argument for point B [Fish are cute! Like kittens! You wouldn't eat kittens, would you?!]. While this may convince a handful of people (a very small handful, in this particular case), all it serves with most is to stifle resonable debate, make people who don't hold principle A more militant (people tend to do that when you insult their intelligence), and make their own position harder to maintain.
Because even the people you do convince with your emotional argument still probably don't hold principle A, so they don't really believe in the cause, and once the emotional control wears off, they're gone. And when a new issue comes up that the same emotional argument doesn't apply to [the killing of some other animal that's demonstrably not cute], people are more likely to disagree with you than if you'd never used that emotional argument in the first place (think about it... what would your reaction be if PETA claimed that, say, the rather uncute angler fish were going extinct, before and after this "sea kitten" nonsense?). Emotional arguments are very much a the-short-term-ends-justify-the-means(-and-the-long-term-ends) tactic.

PETA seems to do this a lot, and it's a big part of why they're such a joke... they're not the only ones though. The pro-lifers I've read about on the fora somewhere, that go around grossing people out with pictures of dead fetuses, for example, have the same problem.

On another note: "sea human" is awesome.
