Italy winning the world cup is a much bigger miracle if you ask me. Of course Italy play shitty football and this is the equivalent to the Mighty Ducks losing in the final against the ruffing evil team.

... possibly, but none of those things had Al Michaels saying "Do you believe in miracles? YES!" and thus have nothing to do with my post.

...

Go Obama!

My wife's forum has a thread about Obama's drug use, and how it shouldn't be tolerated (they are mentioning Bush's drug use, too, but don't seem to mind) and when I pointed out that the American justice system is based on rehabilitation, atonement and forgiveness, they laughed at me.

I wonder what Lincoln would say, if he'd been mic'd?

"I can't believe I had two Bushes in my party."
"You elected a black guy? I waited 150 years for someone to get my point."
"I beat TWO Democratic parties, and a party who just wanted to keep slavery. You guys got it easy."
"I was born in 200 log cabins."
"Barack's from my town, my state. Illinois represent!"
"Could I be any whiter?"
"Real holographic simulated evil Lincoln is BACK!"

Yes I can.
So that's how he won. He has telepathy.

I wonder if the inauguration is going to be like the moon landing? Or JFK getting shot? Too bad school's out down here cause I'm sure kids would love a couple of hours of TV.

This really is an exception. Inaugurations aren't normally anything like this. It's the combination of an incredibly unpopular president leaving office, and an incredibly popular president-elect being sworn in. Add to that how historic Obama's election in and of itself is, and you have the perfect recipe for attracting millions of people to the inauguration. If McCain (or almost any of the other folks in the primaries) had been elected, I doubt there'd be near this much celebration. KF
Not to mention the PM isn't even the head of state, so isn't really comparable to the PUSA. Think about the fuss the Commonwealth'll make over the crowning of the next King.
Looking at who that's likely to be there might be riots or something. More likely most of us won't notice that much either besides "Slow news day, all they've got to show is some middle aged bloke getting a fancy hat."

So is anyone else going to be there tomorrow? I'll post some pictures if I can get a few good ones in.

I went downtown earlier today. It's already more packed than I've ever seen it ever since I moved here 7-8 years ago.

Oh! I also saw those Westboro Baptist Church guys in the flesh. Like, all 12 of them. Holding up little "Obama is the Antichrist" signs and everything. KF

Well, it'll all be going down at around 15:30 onwards here in the uk. I may pop a live feed on while I work, seen as I won't be out of the office until 17-18:00ish (Rehearsal tonight so I'm going straight there from work).

Alas no. The BBC have a good feed going at the moment though. Even without sound you'll be getting a good view. At the moment they're all still going around spouting the same info in a loop, they don't have much to say until it starts in about an hour.

yeah that's what i've got going at the moment. it's a pity because they do the subtitles for the tv broadcast, no reason they couldn't add them to the feed.

Hahaha, what a rocky swearing in, and what a cool speech. I particularly enjoyed his:
(paraphrased?)
"We are a country of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus... Oh, and non-believers..."

But, my coworkers and I cheered when he said "restore science to its rightful place"
... with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

OOPS. Totally late now since his speech is over but if you want to watch the rest, the inaugural page has captions on their feed. http://inaugural.senate.gov/

If the president of my country said the G word so many times and had two religious leaders speaking in his inauguration, I would be scared as shit.

That inauguration poem made me turn off my live stream. No way was I going to waste bandwidth to hear drivel about "make do and mend" philosophy, or "zomgs it is teh loud in teh cities durin teh workin day lolz"

I don't think he's maintained the trust of certain people with his statement of "America is a country of Christians Jews Muslims Hindus Sikhs Buddhists Jedi HareKrishnans Confucians and NON-BELIEVERS!"

My heart did a small little cheer when he mentioned "non-believers" when mentioning the religions of america. Not a huge deal, but recognition is a nice change of pace.

If I ever run for public office, I am going to make a huge deal out of being an atheist. When people ask me why, I'll say because it gives me moral authority over the religious right. When they ask for a REAL answer, I'll say because religion has no fucking place within 100 meters of public service.

Within the context of the US, it's very hard to get elected to anything without at least some lip service to religion. Obama's father was athiest, and his mother agnostic, which is what Obama himself was before joining the United Church of Christ, largely for political reasons--it's a very well-connected church in the Chicago African American community. If he's secret anything, he's a secret agnostic.

As to the religion, I was personally wondering why the pastor felt the need to name Jesus as "Yeshua". Liked the "Isa" bit though.

Ah right, okay. I see where you're going. Wasn't aware that the oathtaker was initially reading it out wrong. Just watching it as an outsider not exactly knowing the script, as it were, I considered it as...
Obama: ... that I will execute ... erm, line please?
Roberts: ... <line segment> ...
Obama: ... <line segment re-ordered, line segment itself a re-ordering of The Book's Version> ...

It's always nice to be corrected.

Oh 'bama

I remember all my life
Presidents were dumbified
Shadows of a man
In his memorial
Cryin' in the night
The night goes into

Mornin', just another day
Happy people pass my way
Lookin' in their eyes
I see the hope and change
I never realized
How happy you made me, Obama

Well, you came and you gave a hard talking,
And then you flew away, Obama
You showed up and stopped our flipflopping,
And we need you today. Obama!

I'm standing on the wide state line
Lookin back some eight years time,
Caught up in a world of Arab-bombin',
The tears are in my mind
And nothin' is rhyming, Obama.

Well, you came and saved us from tanking,
And your job starts today, Obama.
Got your work cut out now, with no thanking,
But we'll thank you someday, Obama

Yesterday's a dream
Tomorrow we change,
Hopin' on a breeze,
The White House is callin', Obama

Well, you came and you trumped Republicans,
And you sent them away, Obama.
Well, you gave all our kids good book-learnin'
Not misunderestimatin', Obama!

No more crappy-ass cars all a-drivin'
That use more gas than a Boeing, Obama.
You got Biden and Clinton out workin'
And we lurve you!
