"Shoe Hurled as Chinese PM speaks" (at Cambridge)

Postby PhatPhungus » Mon Feb 02, 2009 7:32 pm UTC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/7865868.stm

Someone threw a shoe at the Chinese prime minister while he spoke at Cambridge University, also called him a dictator.

Obviously imitating Iraqi who threw a shoe at Bush.

Any XKCDers actually witness this?

I almost went, being as how he was speaking literally just next door, but decided my time was better spent building a large snowman at the entrance to my college. Ah well.

Hmmm, while the video shows a location I'm not familiar with - I'm guessing it's some Arts-y faculty or the Cambridge Union building, the Chinese PM coming to Cambridge would explain the 10 blue police riot vans in my college grounds this afternoon, from about lunchtime til 5pm ish. It definitely wasn't any of the buildings they were parked outside, but I suppose they were back-up or loitering before the event in the sizeable car parking our site offers. No idea where/when he was speaking; would have been great to have gone but I was at classes this afternoon.

No. Is there some Redcoat meaning I'm not aware of?

Shod is a verb for 'wearing Shoes', iirc... as in "The football player was shod in new Nike trainers when he kicked another player in the face, causing multiple lacerations to the lower eyeball"
Shoddy.

Haha.

I love it! I wonder if we'll start seeing no shoes measures, screens in front of important speakers, or having shoe security.

It was at the West Road concert hall I think. Apparently they had a sniper on the roof.

Next thing you know they'll be asking you to leave your shoes with the security guard. People will be reduced to throwing their prosthetics.

WEll, who's going to teach us? We don't have a great proportion of Americans in our towns and cities, because our oil is offshore...

Shoddy.

1) "shod" is also an American word, not just Redcoat. Have you never heard the word "roughshod", for example? I apologize to Brits for the ignorance of my compatriots who never seem to have heard that word.
2) On the other hand, the adjective "shoddy" comes from completely different and unrelated roots, and basically just means "low-quality". So while a pun there could be intentional, I suspect it would only be noticed by people who didn't already know the word "shoddy".
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

Curiousity here, you still have the death penalty over there right? Could it be effected by paper cuts from a dictionary? :P
Also, redcoat is derogatory, it infers I'm a hyperactive actor who can't get a part who now works in Butlins. I take offence ;)

if they were throwing shoes at just every world leader, i wouldn't like it. but shoes are getting chucked at really shitty world leaders, and it's a pretty harmless way to knock them down a notch

Also countdown to forcing everyone to go barefoot when getting near world leaders.... and then people throwing underwear.

Remember. In the Arab world, throwing shoes is a sign of disrespect.

I can just see someone walking in wearing three pairs of shoes inside each other, to ensure heel hit the target.

Also it read the title as "Shoe Hurled at Chinese PM Speaks" and my first thought was a talking shoe!?! They have tongues I guess.

you could have a spinning cluster-shoe, that breaks apart when it is in the air and separates into several hundred smaller shoes which then orient itself heel-first.

They also have soles, so they should be capable of thought, at least according to Descartes.
