Yet another use for Weed.

Hemp, a plant from the cannabis family, could be used to build carbon-neutral homes of the future to help combat climate change and boost the rural economy, say researchers at the University of Bath.

A consortium, led by the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials based at the University, has embarked on a unique housing project to develop the use of hemp-lime construction materials in the UK.

Hemp-lime is a lightweight composite building material made of fibres from the fast growing plant, bound together using a lime-based adhesive. The hemp plant stores carbon during its growth and this, combined with the low carbon footprint of lime and its very efficient insulating properties, gives the material a ‘better than zero carbon’ footprint.

Professor Pete Walker, Director of the BRE Centre for Innovative Construction Materials, explained: “We will be looking at the feasibility of using hemp-lime in place of traditional materials, so that they can be used widely in the building industry.

“We will be measuring the properties of lime-hemp materials, such as their strength and durability, as well as the energy efficiency of buildings made of these materials.

“Using renewable crops to make building materials makes real sense - it only takes an area the size of a rugby pitch four months to grow enough hemp to build a typical three bedroom house.

“Growing crops such as hemp can also provide economic and social benefits to rural economies through new agricultural markets for farmers and associated industries.”

Yay! Now if we can only get past that whole war on drugs sillyness that our supreme socialist commander in chief doesn't give 2 shits about.

My position has always been that the government had better legalize marijuana or, to remain consistent, criminalize tobacco and alcohol, both arguably more dangerous drugs. I mean, really getting blunted on a consistent basis probably kills a few brain cells, but so does scotching it up at every dinner party.

Imagine taking out cirrhosis of the liver and all that other nonsense, plus the domestic/social consequences of alcohol (including abuse and incidentals like house fires, the majority of which can be traced back to drunkenness). I'd tolerate a few more potheads. Anyway alcohol is easily synthesized and I'm Mormon besides so this is probably all just academic.

Is this Lime, or are we making buildings out of weed and citrus fruit?

Searching the site strongly implies its' the mineral, but it's getting to the point where we're not safe to assume anymore.

There are other ways to help build carbon neutral homes. People are just raving about this option because they want to legalize marijuana, and once that happens, smoke it.

This isn't just carbon neutral, it's carbon negative. But yeah, you're basically right - it's still awesome.

With this in place, all firefighters will be required to bring giant bags of Cheetos with them in case they all get the munchies post-rescue.

People in this thread who appear to understand that Hemp and Marijuana aren't actually the same thing: 1.

In this case, it happens to be hemp, not the kind you smoke. Good try tho. :\ Thanks for reading.

Just FYI, the hemp used for construction, rope making, paper making, and other cool things (soap for one) contains only the smallest of THC. You wouldn't get high if you burned one of these homes down.

Hemp farming has long been a powerful means for producing fibrous materials. It's a goddamn weed. Give it light and dirt and it grooooooooooooooooooows

I am aware of the distinction between marijuana and hemp, but I chose to ignore that fact for the sake of magnificent humor.

I'm pretty sure you could legalize hemp while maintaining the illegality of marijuana, it'd just be a matter of regulation.

More likely the type. You can get strains of the plant that produce plenty of hemp but almost no THC.

In the United States, hemp itself is legal, as in the possession of hemp products, but it's illegal to grow it in all states but North Dakota, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana and West Virginia.

There is a possibility that you could. If you want to get high off of hemp, it only requires a joint roughly the size of a telephone pole, so a house made of it would surely have enough.

Though I really think you have some priorities that need to be sorted out if you're willing to burn down your house to get stoned.

Think smoke volume inhaled. It's like claiming being locked in a burning building would give you a good paint fume high before the CO, CO2, NOx and other volitiles didn't kill you.

I always felt that a ragweed-and-mud mixture is superior, although others find it sublime.

This is what they mean. Notice that it is a raw ingredient of concrete.

Interestingly, another popular carbon negative construction method is to just make it out of wood.

Yes, but lime based construction materials don't burn nearly as easily as wood.

I think this material might keep the heat in a bit better than wood, too.

"I'm not growing weed, I'm saving up for a house, officer!"

My opinion:
Legalize it, and use the spare money (that used to be wasted on cops, police dogs, judges, prisons, feeding the prisoners, feeding the police dogs, teaching the police dogs what to do, fuel for driving somewhere where someone MIGHT be growing weed,...) aswell as the money earned by taxing cannabis to build carbon-neutral schools, hospitals and whatever people need.

This thread... has nothing to do with weed. Again. Industrial hemp is a different strain.
