First Collisions in the LHC today

Postby telcontar42 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 9:04 am UTC

The first collisions in the Large Hadron Collider happened today. It was supposed to happen a while ago, but it's pretty exciting regardless.

Woo!

*checks self*

I'm still unvaporised!

I was just checking their press release. I like how the collective terms for protons is a bunch.

According to Schrodinger, we did die. Just only in some really tiny fraction of today's formed parallel universes. Humorously, there's also some parallel universe where I will implode in about 15 seconds. Dreading that one man... dread!

Of course you'll only be able to observe those realities where you don't die, so no worries. You'll implode, but survive the experience in crippling agony.

I liked one of the comments a little ways down here.

No, it actually did end the world. But it also created an alternate reality at the same time and our collective conscious was transferred to it.

Everything is exactly the same, but the color gredlow no longer exists

I think we should demand that refund. The absence of the colour gredlow is a dead give-away.

The red and blue boxes indicate where energy was detected in the detectors outside the tracking detector, called the calorimeters

I assume the dark areas are the black holes?

Couldn't they have thought up a sexier name for something that could've destroyed the universe? Now the Tevatron, that is a building with a sexy sci-fi name.

In fact I think I blew it up in Quake 4.

Isn't Large Hadron an Oxymoron?

I mean, Hadrons aren't very large at all. I can easily fit a mole of them in my hand.

Read it again. He didn't say "Hadron". Besides, size is relative. A standard baryon is a large hadron compared to a meson. And don't even get me started on those pentaquarks - freakin' HUGE!

Forgive me if I've missed some sarcasm, but I believe that it's not named for colliding larger than usual hadrons but the fact that it's some seventeen miles long.

Edited for vaguely remembered and incorrect length.

Exactly. It's not a collider for large hadrons; it's a huge ass-collider for normal-sized hadrons.

Edit: Hyphenation fixed.

Many-worlds is totally the fault of Hugh Everett, not Schrödinger.
