We tried that once. We ended up shooting the power line going into the building we were in during the firefight before we could turn it on tho. :\ stupid power lines.

Surely loud tones and noises would be both more efficient and more appropriate?

Yes, but they'd annoy the soldiers as well, cutting down on everyones combat effectiveness, not just the other guy.

“It’s inappropriate,” he said. “I’m going to ask this to stop right now.”

For some reason this amused me greatly. I don't know why.

Well, think about it. How obnoxious is, say, Indian sitar music with high-pitched ululations, or Mexican mariachi music, to Americans? It goes both ways.

the article wrote:He [army spokesmen] added that, while some locals complain, the music also serves to motivate marines.

Added commas so that the sentence is understandable. So unlike random noise this is noise that our side likes to hear and their side dislikes thus blasting it in a warzone "in theory" will give our side an edge. It's hard to say as they don't describe how they are actually using it.

I am sad though that a generation of Iraqi children will grow up to associate rock and roll with death and horror.

Boomfrog, Taliban is Afghanistan, not Iraq. Anyways it seems kind of short sighted if you ask me. Sure you might enrage and annoy the other side, but the problem that started the whole afghani war is the people who hate our culture attacked us for it. Using our culture as a weapon kind of promotes the same resentment that brought us to 9/11 and the war in the first place.

Local children have been seen covering their ears when Special Forces play the abrasive music.

Doesn't seem too cool to me now. I don't think it's a good idea anyway. Why bring music into war and use it to culminate hatred?

Because they're tools of the music recording industry and this is just their latest effort to stop internet piracy.

Certainly, this piece is much more appropriate.

I would surrender to anyone blasting Tik Tok by Kesha.

I had never thought of it being a bad idea because we are using culture as a weapon. Interesting point.

When my brother went through his "recognition week"** at the Air Force Academy, the upperclassmen played a lot of very loud heavy metal music for hours on end while everyone was running around, getting yelled at, doing pushups, etc. I asked him what effect the music had and he said "Well, if you like Slipknot it makes it more fun."

**This is not a part of basic training.
