Movember is upon us!

Postby Stereotypical Computer Geek » Tue Nov 02, 2010 1:21 pm UTC

My apologies for changing my usual lurking routine, but there's something semi-important I'd like to talk about.

Yesterday, Movember 1st was the start of the month of Movember. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, the Movember Foundation was founded in 2004 in Australia, with the purpose of raising money for prostate cancer research and other men's health issues. They decided to do this in the most absurd fashion possible - making people grow moustaches for the entire month. This has been a very successful affair, with companion events in countries across the globe.

If you don't wish to - or can't - participate in growing moustaches, you can still help. Donate to the Movember Foundation in your country. In the United States, proceeds go to the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LIVESTRONG). When donating, you can search by name or team if you wish your donation to count in the final competition tallies, or you can simply make a general donation. Or, get on the bandwagon, find someone who is growing a 'stache, give them your moral support, and help them fund raise!

What if someone's visage is already graced by a fine moustache?

I am not going to shave it in order to start it anew, for my upper lip shall never suffer the indignity of nakedness again. But perhaps I could stop trimming it for a month, and allow it to joyfully march along the path leading to its inevitable, majestic, Nietzschean apotheosis...

No! The point of Movember is to start anew, and have everyone experience the same horror!

Give me a moment and I will track down the "official rules." There aren't many.

Here is a lovely video with the official rules: http://us.movember.com/news/view/id/1090/category/national/ and a PDF: http://us.movember.com/uploads/files/PDFs/Movember%20Rules.pdf

Basically, they are:

1) Once signed up, you must start Movember 1st (I know, but a day late won't hurt anyone) with a cleanly shaven face.

2) You must grow and groom your moustache for the entire month of Movember.

3) The moustache can't join with the sideburns.

4) The moustache can't join the chin (Fu Man Chu and Handlebars are ok, but they can't be a goatee)

Small growths under the bottom lip were allowed in the past, that may have been removed this year.

I should note that women are not excluded from this event. There are plenty of women who can grow moustaches, and just as men help with Breast Cancer Awareness Month (look no farther than almost every major Mens sports league in October), women can help too! In fact, movember.com has a signup specifically for Mo Sistas, and there seems to be a call for women to wear fake moustaches the Monday after Thanksgiving!

It's an interesting idea, and some hockey players do this. I will not, as I am already rocking a sweet Van Dyke, and I am not shaving it off.

My dad (who's had a moustache continuously for the past 29 years) grows his moustache for movember rather than shaving it off and starting again, by the end of the month he has to wax it or it hangs down to his chin...

If your moustache is going to get that silly, then simply not trimming would definately be fitting with the spirit of movember.

Well, I guess I should take back what I said. Movember is not my personal creation, I was merely attempting to "enforce" the rules of the creators (which I wouldn't be able to pull off anyway). The intent is merely to grow/sport moustaches in order to raise awareness, and if it is as silly as Krikkit implies it would have the desired effect. But I personally already shaved my goatee off, and I guess I wanted people to wallow in misery with me.

Anyway, if its alright with the mods, I'd like to keep this going, and maybe turn this thread into status updates about how we each are celebrating Movember. I guess I'll start with a lovely picture of my impersonation of a naked mole rat:

And so it begins again!

If any of you are feeling generous, and are capable of satisfying that feeling of generosity, may I humbly point you in the direction of my Movember page: http://mobro.co/caughtbythefuzz .

I'm a teenager with blonde facial hair, I started growing mine in September to get a head start so I can claim something by the end of november.

Also the Australia Navy, which normally has Mo's banned is allowing thier personnel to grow them, as long as they grow thier beards until the 30th where they can shave thier beards for photos and judging of the mo.

Interesting. The Canadian Forces dress regulations are the opposite: a moustache is the only allowed facial hair for the most part. There are exemptions to this (Pioneer units, for example, or people with medical conditions that don't allow them to shave) but I'm not sure that the Navy is allowed to just grow beards willy-nilly. It may be that they are allowed while at sea. Anyway, I think I might try the Mo this time around, even though it will probably look ridiculous.

They are allowed beards, no mo's, except for one ceremonial sailor. And the army is opposite, mo's only no beards, except for a ceremonial seargent in the pioneers battalion who must be able to grow a full face beard in 4 weeks otherwise gets replaced. He also has an axe when on parade.

Unfortunately for me, the Movember ship has sailed. A bunch of people at work are doing it but for me it's too late:

I have been taking the opportunity to grow a beard ever since i quit my job - i guess i'll shave all but the moustache, and not trim it. Might post a day 1 pic on nov 1st and then a final pic after a month.

I am. I have dreams of growing a proper goatee. However, a more probable goal would be a Ron Burgundy.

Please note that despite the lovely avatar Sungura gave me, I am not a medical doctor.

He should be clean shaven and grow his beard throughout the month. I do not approve.
