And Tumblr won. 0_o

This probably isn't very newsworthy, but I found it amusing.

What a silly fight, where there can't be any real winners or losers. I mean, let's be honest, nothing is going to happen to either site.

The fact that Tumblr won shouldn't be at all surprising. Tumblr is younger, and has that fresh site scent. It also probably has more people that are willing to do something like raiding, than /b/. 4chan is pretty washed up.

It's arguable. Really, I think what happened to 4chan is balkanization. They've more or less split up into different groups: There's the clambake people who protest $cientology, then there's the raiders who don't do much, the furries, the computer geeks, the fail trolls, etc. Anon as a whole isn't necessarily moving towards anything, but then again, they never have. 4chan is stagnating, but not washed up.

While I don't condone this failure of a raid, it would have gone fine if moot hadn't made a news post about an exploit that could be used to to 404 every thread on a board as it is made. They lost because our figurehead dropped info on an exploit, also /b/ is washed up, all the other delicious fine boards on 4chan are puttering along quite fine.

I'd say that the /b/ comment is a combination of nostalgia filter and entropy hitting an already chaotic board.

I have to say it's amusing that the users of the LOIC believe it can actually be used individually as a potent weapon. Even a hit-or-miss "lets all start at [arbitrary time]" relies on enough people being there at the right time to do any damage. And since tumblr was aware of the attack, they could take precautions in firewalls and other DDOS-protection software.

4chan was doomed to fail in that aspect. Tumblr's trolling plan is rather okay, I think.

Not that I care.

Seeing as they attacked every board on the site, instead of just /b/ with the instant 404 exploit, not really. In internets war, this is equal with shooting civilians.

In internets wars, shooting civilians is kind of allowed though, or at least standard practise.

I think it's more to do with the fact that the stupid people on /b/ have just realised the power of a collective DDOS, but forgot about the collective bit, decided to DDOS anyone who was impolite to their grandmothers, then realised that it doesn't work if nobody cares.

By your argument, the civilians in Afghanistan are in the same country as the Taliban, and they know what kind of thing the Taliban gets into.

I'm not saying they are on the same scale or anything of the sort. I'd be an ass if I did, what I'm saying is that tumblr attacked not only their attackers but people and boards who had fuck all to do with the raid.

No, I'm not saying that. The people who use the 4chan forums decide to go to those forums, knowing full well that they're associating with /b/ byu being there.

By the same token, internet war is really dumb. Even if tumblr started it, making this a big thing is pointless. The best way to win out against Anonymous is to just not let them affect you.

So wait; Tumblr won because Tumblr didn't go down for any considerable length of time, and raided /b/?

First of all, /b/ still managed to scare the crap out of the community, exposed kids to gore and porn, got some idiots to delete their accounts because they started rumours of hacking, ect. so I don't really think they did that poorly in the raid, and second of all, /b/ is a venerable ocean of piss and trolls trolling trolls who are trolling other trolls. You can't raid it, because it doesn't affect it at all. The fact that other boards were raided doesn't really matter, as from what I saw most of /b/ was laughing over this and it took some 'trolling' away from them.

At the same time, Tumblr survived and has recovered from this with ease while only losing the members of the community who were stupid enough to fall for all of the "Hacking" lies (Thus actually improving the quality of the community), while also showing /b/ that it isn't easy pickings and that they shouldn't bother with them, so they didn't really lose.

TL;DR It was a draw with no point, and I find it amusing that anyone thinks one side won.
