This reminds me of the brilliant Munchkin roleplaying game. In normal D&D there are so called 'cantrips', very weak, simple spells at basically apprentice wizard level. And so in the Munchkin roleplaying game, the spell list includes:
- Can't Rip, to make a piece of cloth untearable.
- Can Trip, which summons a small soda can in front of somebody to make him trip
- Kant Trip, which makes the target believe they are a famous 18th century philosopher.

Munchkin is awesome.
It's one of those irregular verbs, isn't it? I have an independent mind, you are an eccentric, he is round the twist

Department of Defense Freedom of Information Act Fax Machine Broken

The DOD uses a single FAX machine to accept all Freedom of Information Act requests. It's broken, and DOD just doesn't have the money right now to get a new one or get it fixed. Not before October 1 at least and probably not before November (takes a month to order one, you see).

In the meantime, no FOI for us!

My thought: They should be able to transfer the budget to buy a good machine if they just defer buying one of those claw hammers ...

If a request is made via e-mail, you may be buying a new machine.
The report was light on technical information.
It was clear, "The DOD system does not play nice with other systems."

From my mil days, yeah, that sounds about right. God, DoD loved their faxes, and holy god were those machines invariably old and problematic.

There's some legacy reasons why faxes are considered more legit than many forms of electronic communication, and for certain legal things, I've had to find a fax machine instead of merely emailing documents. It's a royal PITA, but laws are often horribly dated compared to technology.

Weird. Right?
Nice. But; Weird.

A Pope that is allowed to say, "How am I to Judge?"
In the past, The Pope was as free to speak his mind as the president of the US is.
Now; He is getting all wild and nearly Protestant. What fun!

When it comes to fights over philosophers I'd like to see Hobbes vs Mill, especially if someone uttered the phrase "I'll show you nasty, brutish and short!"

On the Pope story, it really does sound like he's trying to bring the Catholic Church back to a position of love and tolerance and all that New Testament stuff that tends to get forgotten amongst the more fire and brimstone proclamations.

We can still do that. And then the Pope could have a Moon Church built. What fun. We could even develop a Moon Cathedral Architectural Style.

I mean... they have to listen to him. He's the Pope. When it comes to matters of religion, well, he is the guy.

Of course, his interview answers aren't official instructions to priests, but I'm betting he's getting it incorporated.

But I do like his approach. He's not selling out his beliefs to popular demand. They still disapprove of abortion, gay marriage and contraceptives (admittedly points I disagree with them on) and it's still something they'll oppose and deem a sin, but what he's saying is that while the Church does have to fight those battles, they aren't the main component of their existence. They have to go out there, be accepting, get their work done, help people, spread their word, and then address these issues.

And I can completely respect him for that.

I think it's because he's a Jesuit, honestly. Jesuits are sort of like that.

It's hard to dislike the Jesuits. I imagine he's thinking of incidents like those nuns that got excommunicated, for something stupid I can't remember. One of them went on the Colbert Report.

My take is that it's just another barrier to the FOIA. Even if the legality of email was a question, there's still postal service, but no: Requests must be submitted by FAX.

If they could, they would require hand delivery to the office in Unalaska, on a triennial of Cromwell's dismissal of the Rump parliament--and don't forget to account for the change to the Gregorian calendar. But the courts would undoubtedly say that was deliberate noncompliance.

Instead, they had to settle for, "Oops. Sorry. You have to submit by FAX, but our FAX died. Too bad. It'll be back 'soon', we 'ploooomise'."

It won't surprise me a bit if it winds up in court (again) to force them to get another FAX or to accept requests by another method.
In all fairness...

Just FYI, "fax" is not an acronym, just an abbreviation of "facsimile", and doesn't need any capitalization.

Some feel-good news:

Donations of more than $110,000 have poured in from across the US for a Boston homeless man who returned a lost bag with $42,000 in it.

Glen James alerted police after he found the backpack containing cash and traveller's cheques last weekend, and the bag's owner was then tracked down.

A complete stranger later started an online fund for Mr James after reading media reports about his honesty. The man, Ethan Whittington, now plans to meet Mr James to give him the money.

Mr Whittington, who lives in Midlothian, Virginia, said he was so overwhelmed by Mr James' honesty that he decided to start the fund: "The fact that he's in the situation he is, being homeless, it blew my mind that he would do this.''

He said his idea of starting donations on a crowd-funding website for Mr James caught on like wildfire ever since: "It's brought me a lot of hope. This isn't only about rewarding a great guy. I think it's a statement to everyone in America. If we come together and work toward one thing and work together, then we can make it happen."

Meanwhile, Mr James, a former Boston courthouse employee, said that he would not have kept "even a penny" of the money he had found the backpack - even if he were desperate.

Here's your TIL: The fax machine was invented in 1843, thirty-some years before the telephone. There was a commercial one available at the end of the American Civil War.

The basic backstory was some guy saw the Telegraph and said 'cool, now I'm going to send pictures with it!'. Everyone else was too busy laughing laughing in his face to tell him 'no, that's absolutely not how telegraphs work', and he ended up sending images via telegraph. Yet another achievement in ignorance.

No clue if it was a picture of a cat, porn, or both.

One episode of "Murdoch Mystery" involved Murdoch basically coming up with that, sending instructions by telegraph to another city, then they telegraphed back an image, 500x500 squares, each one with a number indicating the darkness of the greyscale to be painted in, giving them a six foot tall picture of the suspect they were looking for. It was kind of awesome.
