Pretty sure the first amendment doesn't guarantee the right to declare yourself a racist while on the job without fear of consequence, but good try.

Well, he was wearing an armband, not outright proclaiming himself as a racist. Nazism has some pretty horrific connotations, but honestly, I'd probably assume the guy wasn't being serious or something if I just randomly bumped into a guy wearing a Nazi armband in NYC.

That said, dress codes and such are a thing. Doing that at work, probably not such a great idea. Keep your crazy to your off time, and you've got a much better 1st amendment case.

Except, this guy explicitly said that he was serious about actually being a nazi. He was also claiming that the nazi atrocities are pretty much entirely made up.

if you don't believe what the nazis did, claim you don't hate jews, and are black but think that's cool with nazis, what, exactly makes you a nazi, then? why claim to adhere to an ideology whose core points you don't believe in?

Maybe he's just a die hard fan of national socialism?
"It is bitter – bitter", he answered,
"But I like it
Because it is bitter,
And because it is my heart."

Yeah, he was also insistent on referring to the nazis as national socialists. My impression is that he's slightly delusional about what happened in and around WWII and so believes that the defining feature of the nazi party was that they were nationalists who were also socialists.

the problem is that ns is just not an ideology like any other. it is inextricably connected with wwII and the holocaust. in some countries it is even illegal to say "not everything they did was bad".

Citation needed.

AFAIK, the law is in a few countries, and it says it's illegal to deny the Holocaust. It's still OK to say that they did a few good things like universal healthcare and archaeology.

Of course, an actual alien baptism would be mindblowing, for more than one reason.

And here I was hoping the article would say that baptism for the humans who will be born on Mars is OK. I don't want aliens, I want some human expansion off Earth!

I don't understand it.
I don't have to.

I think it is funny.
The Pope was put 'On The Spot'.

"Wise Man! Oh, Wise Man!" They cried out.

"What about Aliens? Shall we Babtize Aliens?
Are they deserving God's Grace?"

How is he to Judge them?
He has never met them.

I like his answer.
"Yes." he answered.
"Yes. If they want to be like us, Babtize them."

If we had Aliens, they might want to belong, too.
If we get an Alien, I think we should start out with a Baptism.

If they live though that, a Jewish Bar Misva would be in order.
We are assuming they are smart enough for it.

Then we can move on to some Hindu Rituals.
Even the Buddhists have things that need to be done, too.

He could become a Knight of Columbus a Rainbow Girl and an Eastern Star.

Every event comes with Food and Gifts.
We could keep the Aliens busy with the Esteem portion of the program.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_h ... y_of_needs
Love and Belonging are fun, too.
No TV or Movies for the Aliens!

If they are smart enough to get here,
we don't want to frighten them unduly.

Where would we take an Alien?
If you met one, where would you take it?

There was a meme. It was held in the words,
"Take me to your Leader."

Who would you take it to? The Pope?
Even with an Alien you might have a tough time making an appointment.

Everyday the Pope has Hours of Praying to do. (right?)
Is the Pope required to Pray? Who checks?

The time on stage is like Double Time?
How does That Job work?

Does he ever get time off?
What does a Pope do on his day off?

Sundays don't count, do they?
Why do I want to know how His job works?

Why do we get Pope news?
The world is watching him?

Why? He is just a Man.
He looks like Mary Poppins' Uncle.

Does The World expect him to start giggling and float away?
From what I understand, that stuff does not happen anymore.

God only knows. Some sort of hipster thing maybe. Some sort of in joke, maybe. Cosplay, even. Just about anything seems more likely than an honest-to-goodness nazi.

I mean, I've met folks who claimed to be fascists, which is kind of a dirty word here, but even they were very careful to disclaim any relationship to nazism(they appear to blame the nazis for ruining the "good name" of fascism). There are many odd sorts of people, but the particular sort that openly embraced actual Nazism in real life seems to be pretty rare here.

In this particular case it was an actual WWII replica swastika armband. I think that pretty much rules out the "I didn't mean those Nazis" defence.

Is open nazism really that rare in the US? From what I've gathered from Hollywood movies, it seems quite common, especially in prisons. Supposedly tough Hollywood movies aren't always entirely factual, so I'm not sure how reliable this impression is.

Over here in Western Europe you won't find people openly wearing nazi symbols, because that shit's illegal, but neo-nazism is definitely a thing. Not common, perhaps a few hundred people in the entire country, but it exists.

Are all swastikas considered Nazi imagery? I know they're pretty important to Hindus, Jains and other eastern religions & cultures.

Isn't the swastika reversed in Hinduism etc? (Well, un-reversed, the Nazis reversed it.)

Both chiralities are used, and the Nazis also used both (although only the right-facing ones were on flags)

*shrug* People are amused by inappropriate things basically all the time. People also do dumb stuff basically constantly, so I would be fairly unsurprised if it was a bad joke or something.

Ludicrously uncommon. Neo-nazism is a thing, on a scale roughly similar, but socially irrelevant. Oldschool nazis, though...that's just frigging strange.

Prisons are kind of messed up in the US, and gangs along racial lines are not uncommon, but it's not inherently a nazi thing. That's mostly an easy hollywood thing to tap, because symbols are recognizable, etc.

Perhaps you could get away with using one if the context was clearly that of eastern asian culture. You'd have to be careful though, and it would certainly have to be non-public. Prominently putting a swastika on the facade of a Hindu temple would be a definite no-no.

The context generally leaves little to the imagination though. I've never heard of a Nazi trying to get away with using swastikas by claiming they are Hindu symbols. The premise is rather absurd. Nazis generally aren't subtle, but even if they are, they generally go for things like '88' and the like.

Mutex wrote:Isn't the swastika reversed in Hinduism etc? (Well, un-reversed, the Nazis reversed it.)

That's actually a common misconception. In eastern culture, the swastika is used both ways 'round. And the nazis also used both left and right facing swastikas, especially in their early years. The official nazi flag had a right facing one at a 45 degrees angle, and that's how you usually see them, but it's certainly not the only way the symbol was used by the nazis.

A few folk metal bands in around the Baltic have run into issues when they've tried to use traditional symbols similar to/containing a swastika.

Skyforger for instance are a Latvian band whose name used to feature the Latvian thunder cross (a symbol of the Baltic god Pērkons) which is essentially a swastika with arms bent round one more time (at least, in the version used in their name). They also included a disclaimer saying "no nazi stuff here". Eventually people saying they were nazis because of it persuaded them to change their logo a couple of times by closing the arcs off and by using a different symbol altogether for the o.

Also, a few pieces of Turisas merchandise feature the Tursaansydän, a symbol of the Finnish god Turisas after whom they're named. Again, it looks like a swastika with the ends closed off making it look either like four overlapping squares or four arrows pointing outwards. Most of their merch uses a variant apparently of their own design.

It's also worth noting that both Latvia and Finland used the swastika as part of their official air force livery until eventually dropping it because of the use by the nazis. A few Finnish air force flags still use the Tursaansydän though apparently.

There are also numerous ancient swastikas across most of Europe (and much of the rest of the world) so I suspect their are neo-pagans who would reject nazism but still use the swastika (albeit, probably not as their foremost symbol).

News Anchor Finds Out Devastating News Of Her Friend's Suicide On Air

http://huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/16/ne ... 38536.html

CtiTV reporter Erich Shih was found dead in his Taipei home of an apparent suicide, police said. His friend and fellow journalist found out when the breaking news showed up on the teleprompter, and had to report it.

She got through the report, but it was clear how difficult it was:

Fox news makes me wonder how "in the dark" Americans are, it's like they got a few random people from the bible belt that are more dedicated to complaining about what's wrong with America, and trying to incite a coo(?) than actually giving informative news.

Maybe it's like "60 mins" and "a current affair" here. Where people have realised they are either Bat shit insane or just trying to make drama.

It's coup. Originally French, from coup d'état, literally meaning 'stroke of state', but more accurately translated as 'blow against the state'.

When people talk to me about The News, I hear strange things.
First; People believe that Shit!

Nearly everyone is either Angry or Frightened; Often Both.
I hear people say, "They are lying to us."

When asked who 'They' are, the answer is often, "The Government."
I am not willing to argue the point. They may be correct.

When I ask if the Cute People on TV might be lying,
Some people say, "Yes." Most say, "No."

"That cute girl and her friends would not lie to us."
FOX News is the easiest to understand and the graphics are good.
Life is, just, an exchange of electrons; It is up to us to give it meaning.

We are all in The Gutter.
Some of us see The Gutter.
Some of us see The Stars.

Well Geographically.

Much, much more than just Americans can be in the dark.

Frankly, I'm a bit surprised he did. He didn't explain though, so I really can't say more.

(for those of you outside the US, or unawares, Justice Alito is one of the more... conservative members on our Supreme Court).

At least lable the vertical axis!

I could pull a million youtube links of their bias shenanigans if you want something they call "news" to laugh at.

Ok so this guy murdered someone in 1996. He was arrested the next day, and convicted in 1997.

So 17 years of waiting on death row, and then 3 different verdicts (8th circuit panel, 8th circuit full court, Alito) within an hour, with a 4th incoming the same day.

Are you guys trying to make a mockery of justice?
It's one of those irregular verbs, isn't it? I have an independent mind, you are an eccentric, he is round the twist

The existence of state-sanctioned slaughter does that.
