The least believable part of the story is that the guy actually managed to meet someone on Tinder.

Flamingos In The Men's Room: How Zoos And Aquariums Handle Hurricanes

Zoo Miami's Ron Magill, on lessons learned in past hurricanes:

"Although the netting for that aviary was tested for 150 mph winds," Magill says, "it was not tested to be able to withstand the impact of a mobile home that was picked up in those winds and launched into the aviary like a torpedo."

Created a Facebook event to shoot Hurricane Irma. Started it due to stress and boredom. Interested approximately 43000 people. Distributed a diagram too.

Alternative "proof": Uninstalled Pokemon Go a while ago. Gains nothing from a fake event to distract people from gym domination. (Who will contest them during/after a hurricane? Nobody.)

Personal news. May not be very interesting to the world at large, but I feel that it's humorous (once I get over the personal effects) so you can chuckle at me at your leisure.

I just used foot-deodoriser spray instead of lens-cleaning spray on my glasses. Realised my mistake as (ironically!) the smell reached my nose, as I tend not to apply this spray to offending shoes whilst indoors, and now it's going to be (after most is wiped off) expressing its chemicals directly to the air around my face for the best part of a day, at least.

Spoiler:
"Ingredients: Denatured alcohol, butane, isobutane, propane, propylene glycol, dichlorophen, parfum [sic], linalool, alpha-isomethyl ionane, hexyl cinnamal, benzyl benzoate, eugenol, geraniol."

I assume anything from the "Parfum" and earlier could be what I smell (or they'd drown it in more aqua perfume), but there's probably some of the later compounds that I shouldn't breath too much of, either. I've used the right spray can, after water-washing and drying, but whether I can only smell it due to being in the same room or not I won't know until I go outside into the fresh air.

I'd just come back to edit it away (thinking that perhaps I'd resubmit it under Science, to make it a question of what I'm risking in exposure to each chemical, too late now it's been commented upon, unless a Mod wants to surgically remove these three posts, with Thesh's consent?). I could blame the chemicals. Likely just me being an idiot. No news there, then.

The signs on either side say 1997 and 2017 - is this a different Princess Diana than the one I'm thinking of, that just died at the age of 20, or are they celebrating the 20th anniversary of her death?

The continued obsession with Princess Diana's death is so odd, I can't think of another case quite like it. Kurt Cobain maybe? Prince Albert?

There is an irony about of the very public morbid fascination surrounding her death, which resulted from the very public morbid fascination with her life…

Not that I don't mourn, and not that I don't think she deserves to be remembered, but it's not just the paparazzi in isolation that caused the tragedy, nor the likes of the Daily Mail that perpetuated the more mishandled parts of her legacy. I'm kept well out of it, and I'm keeping well out of it still. Barring such occasional and obviously incendary comments like this.

Yeah. That's true. Add Marilyn Munroe to that list too. Okay then, I'll amend my comment to the obsession with celebrity death in general being odd.

The armchair psychologist in me is coming up with a half-assed theory that the loss of shared mythic narratives of death leaves a void which is being thus replaced (the old "celebrities as deity substitutes" trope).

https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/th ... y-problem/
So journalists are so bad at data analysis that they issue terrible reports, and then turn around and blame the scientists when they get it the slightest bit wrong, acting all surprised. And this happens to the best of them, we're not even getting to willful malicious reporting, like Fox news.
The media keeps misinterpreting data — and then blaming the data

You won’t be surprised to learn that I see a lot of similarities between hurricane forecasting and election forecasting — and between the media’s coverage of Irma and its coverage of the 2016 campaign. In recent elections, the media has often overestimated the precision of polling, cherry-picked data and portrayed elections as sure things when that conclusion very much wasn’t supported by polls or other empirical evidence.

As I’ve documented throughout this series, polls and other data did not support the exceptionally high degree of confidence that news organizations such as The New York Times regularly expressed about Hillary Clinton’s chances. (We’ve been using the Times as our case study throughout this series, both because they’re such an important journalistic institution and because their 2016 coverage had so many problems.)

British PM's make-or-break speech slightly marred by protracted coughing fit, prankster handing her a P45 from her Foreign Secretary, and background scenery telling her 'F off'. Yet, I could almost feel sorry for her about that. (almost)

Frankly more relevant is that her Foreign Secretary continues to insult people, having been offensive to the last decent President of the United States, the President of Russia (hmm, ok-ish), President of Turkey (not that I mind that), the people of Papua New Guinea , the Congo, Europe, the UK LGBT community and UK women. He has now declared that the Libyan city of Sirte could be the next Dubai but "the only thing they have got to do is clear the dead bodies away". She appointed him and she stands by him. Perhaps the set spoke for all of us.
