Well, there's also the fact that (in the US, at least) homeowners' associations have a long-established reputation as being a kind of petty suburban fascism run by people whose greatest joy in life is ordering others around and who only eschew jackboots because they can't find any from designer labels.

Really?
“I really just wanted to own something in San Francisco because of my affinity for the city,” Lam said.

There’s a bit of irony in the couple’s purchase. Until a 1948 U.S. Supreme Court ruling banning the enforcement of racial covenants, homes in Presidio Terrace could be purchased only by whites.

“The more we dug into this,” said the Taiwan-born Cheng, “the more interesting it got.”

It was whites only back when it was founded. I guess if those racists are still there it could be somewhat karmic but there are almost certainly a number of people who only bought there way after any racial restrictions were removed.

I would assume that the roads and sidewalks of all gated neighborhoods are privately owned. It would be legally difficult to defend restricting admittance to public property that the city is maintaining.

The entire purpose for the set up was to keep minorities out. Even if it was just keeping poor people out in general, it is still pretty symbolically entertaining that a minority couple now holds the gates.

Well sure I can see the irony in that. Though its not like that minority couple is poor or anything. They spent $90k on a whim here and did nothing with it for the last two years. Im fairly sure they're not hurting financially.

The blue dogs of Mumbai: industrial waste blamed for colourful canines

The Guardian wrote:Authorities in Mumbai have shut down a manufacturing company after it was accused of dumping untreated industrial waste and dyes into a local river that resulted in 11 dogs turning blue.

The group of strangely coloured canines was first spotted on 11 August, according to the Hindustan Times, prompting locals to complain to the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board about dyes being dumped in the Kasadi river, where the animals often swim.

Footage shows the animals roaming the streets with bright blue fur.

A flood has destroyed the home of a Christian lobbyist who preached that God sends natural disasters to punish gays.

President of the controversial Christian group Family Research Council, Tony Perkins, described a deluge of “near biblical proportions” hitting his Louisiana home.

During a broadcast on the group’s radio station, he told how he and his family had fled in a canoe.

Writing on the FRC website, he said: “While activists like to claim that pedophilia [sic] is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem.”
If you feel it's a shame he didn't drown, hold onto hope that someone'll find his stash of child porn in the wreckage of his home during the clean-up and out the hell out of him.
Oh, Willie McBride, it was all done in vain.

Hence my belief that biblical deluge was just a big flood located in a specific country. Or in a specific plain.

Perhaps someone who thought the [sic] was therefore incorrect should have themselves quoted it as [sic] [sic]…

I was there when a prior hardcopy of a tale-yet-to-be was partly read, then shredded (and the shreds spirited away!). The room was electric.

(Steamrollering the HDD may not have resulted in a proper data destruction. If Rob has had any conviction over the process, he might well have previously also used a materially non-destructive data wiping method, so that the person who eventually pilfered the platter from its prominent presentation podium would present only a parityless product to the party participating in piecemeal picking over for preserved preparatory paperwork, prior to provisional posthumous publication. Pardon me.)

Can't say I'm happy with it, but final wishes are final wishes.

To be fair: less "unpublished novels" and more random musings, works in progress, snippets of things, backlogged ideas... stuff that likely never would have seen the light of day even if the man had lived to be a million. Or if they would, they'd be very different than what you'd find by crawling around in the guy's scratchpad.

Jared kushner is in over his head as his family has doubled down on a 1.8 billion dollar real estate albatross. His company owes $1.2 billion and hasn't paid a single penny. The full amount is due in February. In unrelated news, kushner was in talks to Russians about adopting Russians.

Tldr this kid is in over his head and is headed for a mighty fall unless a rich oligarch/fund bails him out.
Note- this is still happening despite him marrying into the Trump family and their resources. And him having the presidency on his side.

There's whole areas of literary study (and other areas, like with music scores) devoted to analysing the scribblings and incompletable works in progress and keeping the legacy going. We get to see where Schubert was sort of going, the tale of Edwin Drood is something to be discussed, the estates of Flemming and Asimov (amongst others) have curated their legacies into variously successful continuations and (differently) we can curse that alleged Man From Porlock for killing tbe drug-adled dream.

I yet await CSI Ankh-Morpork (set in motion and authorised, pre-mortem, but a little hard to work out how far Rhianna has got it towards an end-product) and I know that there are those many books that never got written (like the one with Susan Sto Helit doing a "Mary Poppins", possibly shelved after incautiius speculation was made on alt.fan.pratchett) that might never have been, but the snippets and flavours of inspiration that seemingly only existed to be then lost (like a misdirected particle of Inspiration) tear at my heart somewhat.

I think it's just that I get the feeling that JK, amongst others, will leave mountains of her coffee-shop scribblings to the nation and that her somewhat derivative idea of a school for wizardry will end up being remembered more, just because her nerd-followers had the rising tide of the mass-appeal web 2.0 environment behind it (for example) whilst the nerd-follower band to which I belong, no less enthusiastic and still somewhat as liable to encostume oneself as a wizard or witch at the drop of a pointy hat, self-radicalised themselves in the far more rarified environment of pre-September NNTP services and just did the whole "mania" thing in a much more genteel manner. So I really want it to be realised, a century hence, that a young wizard in glasses could well be Ponder Stibbons (or any other of the same tyles, from differimg authors), and I can't help feeling that this won't happen quite so readily off the back of such a transient destruction of artwork as it might if properly (and consideratedly) curated into more of a legacy than merely an exhibition.

I'm probably not looking for a full on Discworldworld (Florida, Paris, Tokyo, Wincanton) experience and the stylistic symbol of a turtle being recognised even in the depths of the Amazon as an unmistakable cross-cultural icon, etc, but I rather dislike that 'merely' by selling out to Warner Brothers/whoever, the future history of literature may see one face of fiction, but not the less mercenary face of fiction to which (by now, you will have realised) I am personally rather more invested in.

Or it could be a much more mercenary approach, being taken. A carefully scripted and scheduled continuation of thr legacy in periodic manifestations of new stunts, far more subtle than the finished film-franchise being buffed up by a not-a-sequel aimed for the 'Merkin market, to return back intoto the field after a foray through an unrelated book about a temp (wasn' t it?).

But that's my problem. I like being in a select group. I'll evangelise about it, to attract others, but it's also like Dwarf Fortress… I don't mind that not everybody gets it, 'cos those who do are much more special for it. Yet the group must survive, and thrive, despite that! Being the ultimate in legacy hipsters, shunning opportunities for popularising in the mainstream, leaves us just with statues of Ozymandius in the times beyond our times. And thus, without being privvy to all the other behind-the-scenrs machinations, I am left bereft and torn and only able to perceive a loss of data as a virtual death, unrecoverable, and not quite as upsetting as the loss of TMIAH himself but (in my philosophy) very much a reinvoked sign of his irreversible passing.

(Which is probably a very heavy thing to write in the "humorous news" thread, but I really didn't find the original article humorous anyway. Very poignant, with a wry and dry sense of humour such that I'd expect from the man, more like.)

I find Trump-family inconveniences very funny, but I do imagine that Trumpistas would find them troublingly unhumorous. Fuck'em, I've got my own fanatical crisis of confidence to get out of my system, and if I can use their problems to salve my own emotions, I will! Go Meuller!

Yeah, just one of my tendencies, and it's not as if I'm unaware of it. Apologies to all.

(TL;DR; - loss of data isn't worse than loss of life, but loss of life is already loss of data and so loss of both life and (non-living) data is a lot more loss than I care for. And I also think the Potterverse gets far more attention than it deserves, so more Discworld would be a better situation than less! :P)

As I read it, the mortgage is owed directly by the Kushner family holding company, the same company that owns their other properties. If that goes bankrupt, the family has lost most of its wealth. They will probably still own some 'minor' other things, and they will still be much richer than you or I, but they won't be the real estate tycoons they want to be.

If I were American, this would worry me. It's a recipe for corruption - whoever is willing to loan money to the Kushner family now, can surely ask for some very nice favours in return.

I thought that was the whole implied point of the article. That Kushners are in a heap of trouble, and wink wink doesn't that remind you about his wife's dad who's under investigation for something something in Russia.

Rising superpower complains about moral decay, and how people used to treat each other better in the past. It's not really funny, just a reminder that complaints about so called "moral decay" and nostalgia for the past is everywhere, and throughout all phases of time/development. Reminds me of all the fluff stories on Fox that aren't about minorities out to kill/rape/take your job.
But their popularity has been accompanied by a wave of misbehavior. Because the start-ups do not use fixed docking stations, riders abandon bicycles haphazardly along streets and public squares, snarling traffic and cluttering sidewalks. Thieves have taken them by the tens of thousands, for personal use or selling them for parts. Angry and mischievous vandals hang them in trees, bury them in construction sites and throw them into lakes and rivers.

Such problems have raised questions about the sustainability of China’s bike-share boom. But the debacle has also led many Chinese to look for deeper explanations and ask if bike-sharing has revealed essential flaws in the national character, prompting a far-reaching debate about social decay and the decline of decorum and morality in the country.

“We look at ourselves, and we ask, ‘What is wrong with the Chinese nation, the Chinese people?’” said Xu Qinduo, a political commentator for China Radio International in Beijing. Many people are proud of the country’s economic achievements and growing global clout, he added, but worry that it still lacks a strong sense of morals.

Many now see promise in bike-sharing, with the domestic news media hailing it as one of China’s four great modern inventions, drawing a comparison with the ancient inventions of gunpowder, paper, printing and the compass.

I am glad to see that tech-puffery is a worldwide phenomenon ;-)

Our local authorities have started to remove the bikes - it's not quite a plague yet, but it is annoying.

I'm so old that I've seen it all when it comes to tech puffery, and I don't even have grey hairs yet. The problem I have now, or had (new job, woo), was the whole "machine learning" bullshit. Everyone wants a data analyst (I'm an actuary, which is similar) that can do "machine learning", because the hiring manager heard about it on some blog and has absolutely no idea how it works beyond "it makes monies appears", so now every data analyst has to bullshit that they can do machine learning. Actual machine learning is, well, the XKCD comic was pretty on the nose.

Plus the suggestion that at some point, someone will ask 'grandpa, how did you meet grandma'.

When you have a first date go so embarrassingly that your story winds up in international news, you pretty much have to get married. I mean, isn't that the law?
