I don't think I've got Tim Cahill or Luka Modric, but I ought to check before they leave the country... at least you can make unlimited changes before the season starts if someone moves. Is it the end of August when the transfer window closes, a couple of weeks after the season has begun?

It's actually just before the first game, 18th August. You can then make (I think) 2 free transfers each game week, with each subsequent transfer costing you a set number of points.

You also get one wildcard week (at least you did last year) where you get as many transfers as you want/need during that one week.

Ah, I meant when is the real-life transfer window?

Ideally, the fantasy transfer wildcard can be left until the January transfer rush. Not there's as much activity as before the economic downturn.

Someone really misreading the thread title whilst making the most original gag ever.

I'm calling them Great Britain, the term Team GB just doesn't sound right at all.

I saw Swansea play the Colorado Rapids last night. The Rapids somehow won, 2-1. It was a fun match. Both teams played a lot of reserve players and the Rapids played a couple of their local products which was great to see.

Shamelessly stolen from reddit:

I lent a hand to an Arsenal striker the other day using my Transit to help them move house. After the umpteenth box was moved, the cheeky bugger drove off in it. I went to have a word with Wenger and he just shrugged, saying "Possession eez nine tenths of ze law..." All well and good Arsene, but that doesn't make it Robin's van per se.

Oh dear! This was first posted on Football365 quite a few years ago:

Paul Ince was charged with dangerous driving after reversing into Arsene Wenger's car, but the case fell apart when Arsene appeared as a witness. Under cross-examination he claimed "I did not see the Incey dent".

I've not seen it yet, but apparently South Africa's goal yesterday was scored from the halfway line. Pity that's been overshadowed by the furore over the North Korean players having their photos displayed alongside South Korean flags.

So it's been overshadowed by the Olympics (and a lot of amusingly sanctimonious 'why can't big bad footballers be more like the people at the Olympics' articles), but we had the Charity Shield today and the season begins next weekend. Let nine months of depressing moments and watching Man City cruise to the title commence!

Aye, I'd completely forgotten about the Community Shield (why did they rename it?) until it was 85 minutes in.

I see City have bought Rodwell, which is a shame. I suspect Everton will miss him more than City will gain from having him. On the other hand, I guess a large chunk of money was involved.

England play Italy in a friendly on Wednesday, which has meant an early start to the tradition of players picking up injuries that prevent them from turning up for international duty, only to heal miraculously in time for the weekend's club games.

Oh really? They're going to ruin him :(

In a team with De Jong, Yaya Toure and Milner as defensive mid options, Rodwell will not be getting the BPL starts he deserves.

Yes, that would be my worry.

Seems De Jong may leave though:
BBC wrote:[Rodwell] will add depth to a City midfield department without England international Gareth Barry, who has a hip problem, while Nigel de Jong is stalling over a new deal.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has attracted interest from Bayern Munich.

Some reports (well. just the (tabloid level) newspaper De Telegraaf) of Ajax being in financial troubles. Needing to sell Anita and VdWiel to fix their budget.

Might be overstated, but worrying nonetheless.

Van Persie to Man U for £24million (medical and personal terms pending)... I didn't expect that. Not sure what to make of it.

In the end Van Persie was always going to go after his statement last month. And since he made that statement it was clear only three teams were likely to get him (Man City, Man Utd and Juventus). In the end, £24 million is probably a decent amount. It's a gamble from Arsenal, who are obviously banking on him not having another annus mirabilis like last season (which was his first full season in ages). Will just have to see if it pays off. Very disappointed that Song appears to be off though, he was very good last year.

So, it looks like the US men's national team beat Mexico in Mexico for the first time ever. Of course it's just a friendly, so it's not as important as next month's games against Jamaica.

I joined the league that was mentioned here a few posts back. Also a league at work, where the organiser warned the site would probably crash today - seems the site going down near the start of the season is fairly typical.

I started the team 2 weeks ago and last night I had to swap half of my team. Most notably I took Rooney off my team because of RvP's arrival.

I want one of Kagawa, Hazard, or Giroud, but their prices seem a bit expensive for players making their debut season. With RvP in I don't even know if Kagawa will start regularly :?

Tottenham looked the better team, but Newcastle took the points anyway. The Newcastle defence did not look as solid as last season's, but they should improve when Coloccini comes back.

Woo, above average for the first day, with 18 points. Picked Cisse on form (from last season, I know) but it was Ba that scored. Thankfully played de Gea instead of Friedel, who didn't keep a clean sheet. Currently, my two on the bench who've played scored 0, so good decisions there. Everyone on the pitch scored at least one, and Vermaelen did me proud with 6.

Arsenal were more convincing than I think anyone is giving credit to them. They look like a more complete team than the van Persie delivery service they were by the end of last season. And remembering how we started last season, this isn't such a bad beginning.

I wasn't paying attention and so I had Song and Dempsey playing, but I still did pretty well with Sinclair as captain picking up 12 points. And yeah, agreed on Arsenal. They dominated the match. Just gotta finish.

EDIT: Curse you Southampton for not holding out!
