Big trigger warning: Dogville...Still, I think it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Mostly because of the ending.

Yeah, the ending of that was really cathartic, which helped. Wouldn't make the triggering parts themselves any less triggering though, I suspect.

See, that one was written for the express purpose of exploring a patriarchal dystopia. I will now tease you by comparing it to a thread for people who are traumatized by governmental abuses of power and you posting 1984.

Surely, though, there are people who pick up Atwood (or Orwell) without being fully aware of the subject matter of those books beforehand, so the trigger warning can still be a good thing to make.

When I saw luna's post on language, I was reminded of a really excellent book that I wanted to recommend to her, but even putting it here sort of spoils the ending (I sort of saw it coming, but maybe that was just me.) So, the name of the book is in one set of spoilers and the specific ending-spoiling trigger warning is in the other.

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell. It's a science fiction novel, and it's really good if you like your fiction dark. I liked its treatment of aliens. I was reminded of it because the main character is one of the best language-learners in the world, which is the reason he gets to go on the first mission to the alien planet - they figure if anyone can communicate, he can.

A human man is kept in a cell and raped repeatedly by the nobility of the alien species, as a sort of toy, and much of the book centers on his reaction to that trauma after he returns to earth.

No. I was fine. The whole idea behind the movie is that Sister Delicious, and we the audience, see nothing conclusive or even evocative. The boy, the maybe-victim, is a very minor character (in the play they never showed him at all.) Your worst enemy in this movie is your own imagination of things that aren't really even hinted at.

Mrs Miller confirms that Donald's father, her husband, is controlling and violent to both of them. She also expresses indifference (well, it's a lot more complicated than that, but the conclusion is that she would not want any action to be taken) to the idea of Father Flynn's abuse of her son.

During the final confrontation between Sister Delicious and Father Flynn, Father Flynn is clearly agitated. As he steps into Sister Delicious's office, she tries to insist that they would require a third party to be present. He yells "No, Sister! No third party!" and slams the door behind him, then advances toward her. He does not so much as lay a finger on her, but I can see his disregard of her wishes and anger triggering some people.

Much of the film revolves around a particularly graphic rape scene. The unpleasant nature of the situation is clear in the full cut of the film, but the censored (R-rated) version leaves her reaction ambiguous, and almost seems to imply that she enjoys it. It was censored for length, not content, so the rape is very graphic and disturbing in either version.

The male protagonist is raped by an ex-girlfriend. I don't remember the exact details, but I think that he was under the false impression that it is his current girlfriend that he is having sex with. The movie doesn't really treat the event as a rape, but even the dullest viewer will be able to recognize that non-consensual sex is rape no matter what the gender of the victim and the specifics of the situation. Personally, I found it moderately disturbing that no one in the movie even thought that what happened was a rape when, if the genders were reversed, it would obviously be considered a morally abhorrent.

Also the movie was completely terrible so you shouldn't watch for any reason.

This is not a safe book. It's a great book, but not safe.

Attempted rape scene. Felt like a mix of Casino Royale and Ender's Game. Brutal, violent, excessive. Interrupted by other heroes, devolved into gang beating of the rapist. Later, we learn that the victim later had an apparently consensual union with her attempted rapist, and had a child, and because of that child she forgave him everything.

I have gotten the complete first season of Heroes off of pirate bay and am watching it now for the first time. I've only just seen the pilot episode and it really, really upset me, and I'd like to know if the show is going to continue to be this clueless/harmful:

There's a single mom who strips on her webcam to pay her bills, which doesn't pay great, so she had to take out a big loan from the mafia to try to get her son into a private school. She can't pay them back on time. Two thugs come to her house. They drag her into her bedroom, turn on her camera, and tell her to start stripping. She's pissed and scared and cooperates and one of the guys starts saying disgusting things and he slaps her and it's all very scary.

But that wasn't even what was really the problem, although it deserves a trigger warning. The problem was the scene right after it, with Hiro:

Hiro speaks with his friend about how he could teleport into the women's bathroom if he wanted to.

Then he does.

We don't ever see him in the bathroom with the women, we just see him getting dragged out by (male) security, yelling or whatever.

It's played for laughs. It's supposed to be lovable. His friend calls him a pervert, but it's supposed to be funny. This is pretty clearly never going to be brought up again; it's a one-off incident in Hiro's life. Hiro is supposed to be sympathetic. We never even see the women. Whether they were scared, whether they were angry, is totally irrelevant to the story.

RIGHT AFTER this near-rape scene. But it's okay when Hiro does it. Because he's just a lovable goof.

It just took my breath away. I'm worried that I won't be able to forget what Hiro did as the story moves on, and I'm worried that I will be able to. Argh.

So, guidance?

We watched it in English last year and for me the most disturbing scene by far is when Connie Corleone is beaten by her husband. I can't remember much of it, but I do remember that even my English teacher agreed that she found it more horrible than all the killings and other violence in the film in the way that it's portrayed.

Re: Heroes

There are a few instances of possibly/probably triggering scenes, that I can remember. I've just gone back to look and there's a storyline in the very beginning (episodes 3-5 in season 1) where Claire is sexually assaulted and almost raped, and tries to get revenge on the rapist. As far as I can remember, that's the only storyline that actually touches on sexual assault.

Some of the powers are really creepy though. Sylar's telekinesis power is scary in that he basically holds people down with his mind, although he never does anything sexual with that power. The creepiest thing I can think of was in season 3, when there's a guy who's basically a puppetmaster and can force others to do what he's doing. Again, he doesn't use the power sexually, but just the idea of it is terrifying even to me. Matt's dad can trap people in nightmares. So I'd say the show is triggering in that it often shows people being trapped or held down.
