http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/online_communities_small.pngJust freakin' awesome. There's just a thousand little jokes here: "Stallman's Airship", "Google's Volcano Fortress", "Attractive Myspace Images".
I especially like the sunken Usenet.

Yep, awesome. My favorite bit is the "Bay of Trolls", around Fark, Digg, et. al.

"The Wikipedia Project" is actually the Wikimedia project. Not to nitpick, of course

It used to be that I had to look at the night sky or the ocean to feel very, very small.
Now the Interwebs do it for me.
Oh: viva the People's Democratic Republic of xkcdia!
I will not succumb to evil, unless she's cute.

Dou you have an even larger version? I can't read the name of some of the islands in the Blogipeligo.
Also, I don't see xkcd. Is it there somewhere? If not, I think it should have been a little to the south of the center, between the Deviant Art and the Rose-Compass-Shaped island.
Iluvatar, don't forget to mention how AOL, Windows Live, Yahoo, Myspace and the like are all around the Noob Sea!
[Edit] Do I see "Spaaaata!" and "Soviet Russia"? This comic is full of jokes, probably my favorite in a while!

Great stuff.
Even better would have been to add Xkcdia somewhere like the people are talking about over in serious business.

As cool as it would be to have XKCD on the map, it's not really large enough to constitute a major online community. I mean, there are plenty of forums large than this that didn't make it.
Although, maybe for reference, he could put a "you are here" marker for XKCD.

Haha, I noticed "The Lonely Island" in the corner and smiled.
To be honest, if this was made into a poster I'd probably have to buy it.

I didn't know Your Base was so close to Soviet Russia. *The more you know!*
ETA: I'd buy the poster too. Especially if that meant I could read the tiny ones

This is my first (and possibly only) post, but I registered just to support the idea of a giant poster made out of this comic.

Very nice, but I have a few questions.
First: shouldn't 4Chan be in the sea of memes?
Second: That unnamed landmass to the SE of Runscape, is it the Kingdom of Loathing? I do know that those two are in the middle of an unspoken war right now.
Third: Where are the Shareware, Indie Freeware, and Abandonware nations? Sure, their golden age is over, but they still have a presence.
Lastly: Why are the webcomics missing from the Ocean of Subculture?

Those maps lose their rights due to inappropriate use of homosexual slurs for no clear reason.
Also, for looking like they came off 4chan. Nothing worthwhile ever comes from 4chan.

If we were being sticklers for attribution those would have to give credit to
this and
this and
this.
People on the internet have the same idea. 'S what happens.

Xanga is bigger than livejournal?
I haven't heard about xanga in years, weird.
I wonder if that includes the livejournal knock offs, like deadjournal

Poster (n+1)'ed
I will do anything to have this poster hanging in my room. If you (you being Mr. Munroe) don't sell it, I will be forced to obtain a high(er) resolution copy of the map from you (by force, if necessary) and get off my ass and print it at kinkos. You don't want this to happen

2channel is enormously too small. It's at least 3x larger than every other online forum.
I'd have to say this is the worst XKCD to date. Not only is it a rehash of an old joke, it doesn't make any improvements on it. In fact, half of the poorly MS Paint'd internet maps I've seen are better.
The only redeeming quality is that Gaia isn't on the map.
Check Alexa.

This is fantastic.
Also, I saw it change between viewings. Something Awful got put where Soviet Russia was originally. I had the large version in one tab and the small one in a thread on another forum when I noticed Soviet Russia wasn't in the same place. Reloaded the large one, and *poof*, Something Awful appeared.
Wish I'd saved the original, it will be a collector's item some day, like a Revenge of the Jedi poster.
Actually, I did manage to rescue it. Compare to the current version:

Query, can anyone read that bit of text on the far east of the web1.0 mountains, in the icy north? 'Looks like "cmscm squiggle" under the scrutiny of Opera's hyperzoom.

A long time xkcd reader, but first time forum poster. This is definitely one of my all-time favorite xkcd comics. Just want to support the poster concept. Also, how about an even higher-res (printable) version of the image or even an SVG version?

Second: This made me realize I spend way, way too much of my life in front of a computer. I'd definitely put this up on my wall.
