Anti-Carols

It's only cool if no one's heard of it.

Anti-Carols

Postby Antimony-120 » Fri Nov 28, 2008 3:53 am UTC

I have lost a playlist I once had, called Anti-Carols. It was for when I was working at a department store and got sick of carols. I am now sick of carols once more (for other reasons). I would like to remake this list, with any of your help. Basically any song about winter or Christmas which, instead of extolling the virtues of a "winter wonderland" or whatnot, is either depressing, angry, sad, or whatever.

The only song I remember was The Pogues - Fairytale in New York.

No list would be complete without Weird Al's The Night Santa Went Crazy.

Code: Select all

_=0,w=-1,(*t)(int,int);a()??<char*p="[gd\
~/d~/\\b\x7F\177l*~/~djal{x}h!\005h";(++w
<033)?(putchar((*t)(w??(p:>,w?_:0XD)),a()
):0;%>O(x,l)??<_='['/7;{return!(x%(_-11))
?x??'l:x^(1+ ++l);}??>main(){t=&O;w=a();}

Kevin Bloody Wilson – Hey Santa Claus You Cunt

Although, this may not go down too well in a department store.

You mention that song but not Christmas at Ground Zero? For shame.

Also, what about that song "The Christmas Shoes"?

Tom Lehrer's "A Christmas Carol" is a brilliant parody of Christmas carols. Example quote: "angels we have heard on high, tell us to go out and BUY!"

In the classical realm, one shouldn't forget Schubert's song cycle Die Winterreise ("Winter's Journey"), which is probably the most monotonically depressing work I know.

Pedro the Lion-God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

His version just gets more and more depressing with each line. The quality isn't that great, but I love this song.

The Kinks - Father Christmas fits the bill for 'angry.'

Don't forget this guy, who made an entire Christmas parody album, which makes fun of Christmas, carols, and sometimes even its own songs. It's not exactly angry...but it does have songs about greedy children, horrible fruitcake, a tax-dodger stuck in jail for Christmas, etc. And of course, this.

And if you thought that was weird, brace yourself.

?Anti-carol - Paul Simon's Silent Night/Seven O'Clock News.

It doesn't suit your purposes, though, being essentially still a traditional Christmas Carol.

Tom Lehrer's Christmas Carol is a must have for this sort of thing.

One of the guys on here plays piano and they've done a few Evil Christmas carols.
Worth a listen and if you register to the site for free you can download them as an mp3 I believe.
