I read the time before I read the sport, so I thought you can 500 metres in 40 seconds.
That would be something.

There's some mightily impressive records on here. I go running (note I do not say I am a runner
) and my PB is for a half marathon at 01:27:45. I did the NYC marathon in 03:23:52 (I think) but feel I could do much better.

I finally broke 100 lbs on my press yesterday. Pretty happy about that. Other than that... 280 lb squat is my current 5RM, but I am certain I can do more.

Thats a pretty substantial milestone to reach.
I've been doing cross-training for my swim team, and we ran our first 5k this week in practice
My coach clocked me at a 18:57... I couldn't believe how hard it was. Harder than anything I've ever swam in a practice thats for sure... Hopefully I'll learn to run smarter soon
Race running is much different from practice. The gigantic starting lines and having people around to pace off gives you a kind of rush throughout the race, and after a while it isn't painful any more.
Yeah, the same sort of thing happens in open water swimming for me, so I know what you mean. I'd try to do a real 5k race, but being smack dab in the middle of the competitive swim season makes me think twice before starting something new like that.

I'm running a marathon in march and I'm going to try to qualify for the boston marathon while there. The qualifying time is 3:10:59 which means I'll have to run about 7:15 miles for 26.2 miles (!!).

I dont lift weights as I have a small phobia of using public machines, but here is my cardio records
3.42 miles - 26 minutes 12 seconds(distance from my house to work)
43 push-ups in one minute
132 push-ups in a row
58 sit-ups in one minute
This isnt really a record, but its something Im proud of, In my Judo class we have something called the Gauntlet. The Gauntlet has a varied number of "defenders" and one challenger, The challenger has to go up to the first defender and preforms the first five judo throws five times against him, the the challenger goes to the second "defender" and is thrown with the first five judo throws five times, the challenger then continues against more "defenders" alternating getting thrown and throwing them until he beats all of the defenders or he gives up. No breaks between the defenders.
Last month I completed a Gauntlet of seven.

Its not just the machines, its the padded benches and everything else, I shudder to think how often my college gym cleans their free weights.
I got a bad case of Staph from a gym once.

Then wear gloves and sweatpants and do deadlifts and olympic lifts.
Re: Personal Records
If the dude's got a psychological condition that prevents him from using a public gym, I doubt someone else is going to be able to convince him to get over his fears through the internet. Getting some sort of home gym (hint: not bowflex, more like a bar and bumper plates) would be the only feasible suggestion.
Anyway, this is the personal record thread. I'm doing Starting Strength at the moment, and posting these is kind of silly, because I'll be beating most of them in the next week, but here goes:
(all in pounds):
Squat 220 x 3x5
Bench 140 x 3x5
Press 90 x 3x5
Power Clean 165 x 5x3
Deadlift 265 x5
Pullups [bodyweight = 185] 3x6
I recently let a friend talk me into running a 5k with him on an indoor track and did it in 24:05.

Not so much traditional exercises, but:
Reverse Punches: 500 each side without breaking stance.
Deep Horse Stance: 30 minutes. (My old record was 2 hours, but this was by far the most I've done since becoming fat).
Overhead lift: Lifting both garbage cans (full) out of the snowbank where they'd become frozen, one in each hand.

Yeah, my estimations using our 80gal garbage can and a scale indicates that its like lifting a pair of 60 kg kettlebells, only more awkwards.

Re: Personal Records
A week from now I'm running my first college track meet... I'm a little bit scared of running indoors, because I usually don't breathe well inside at all. But I'm running the 5k around the 300m track, and hoping to throw down a 17 flat, or close to it.
I see people more are talking about marathons now, which is cool... I want to do one someday, hopefully soon. If I can't make the cross team next year, which I think I should, I'd like to run the Chicago Marathon, since this is the last year I could try and win the 19 and under age group
and because people on my team come to watch it every year. Problem is, registration closes probably in April already, and I don't think I can commit by then. Otherwise, I'm probably studying abroad for the spring 2010 semester in the Netherlands, so I'm hoping to do one there since I won't have track. I'll probably go for under 3 hours, but making the Boston qualifying time would make me plenty happy. I did a half marathon in 1:30 last fall, when I was in good shape but not specifically for really long distances.

What school do you run for? I've never raced farther than 3200m on a track, and I've never raced on an indoor track, but keep in mind that your indoor time for 5000m will be slightly slower than your outdoor time (on the order of a few seconds, if you're shooting for 17 flat). Good luck!duckshirt wrote:A week from now I'm running my first college track meet... I'm a little bit scared of running indoors, because I usually don't breathe well inside at all. I'm a freshman (D-3; in college, they do the international track events, ie 1500 (or mile indoors), 3000, 5k, 10k, steeplechase), but it turns out I'm not running for them anymore. They decided to make all the outdoor season cuts early this year to a smaller-than-normal team, whereas in previous years, anyone could run the indoor season and a few open meets outdoors. It's probably one of, if not the best running dynasty in division 3 (in good years, the cross team is capable of beating almost all the D-2 teams even), so it's not too disappointing.
So, with that change of plans, I'm maybe running some open track meets and road races eventually, hopefully running a 25k race in May (probably the biggest running event of the year in my area... it's pretty big), and possibly starting marathon-ing next fall, if I don't try out for cross country. It'd be fun to do a marathon while I'm still in the 19 & under age group...

Really serious gyms have 1lb plates, because increasing your max lifts by 5lbs at a time is too much.

I knew about the 1lb plates on machines, but I don't think I've ever seen a leg press machine that goes up to 1,000lbs that's like that.

Use an angled, plate-loaded sled and there should be plenty of room for all the plates, especially the ones that have a third prong for putting weight on top of the sled as well as on the sides.
Re: Personal Records
Leg presses are a joke. You can load up as much as you want and then press it a few inches. Hey, I just lifted 1000 pounds!
Seriously though, a 1000 leg press translates to about a 200 pound squat.

Re: Personal Records
Ummm... that's a bit of an exaggeration. My leg press rep max is about double my squats rep max, using the full range of motion.

Yeah he threw on that 1 lbs plate so he could say he could do more than half a ton. And yes he's a big boy.

Yeah but how many people do 1000 pounds with a full range of motion.

Re: Personal Records
So because most people are incapable of doing 1000lbs on the leg press with full range of motion, the leg press machine isn't beneficial and your max on it will be roughly 500% of your max on squats?

Re: Personal Records
The leg press machine is not beneficial.
Re: Personal Records
The leg press machine is less beneficial than squats. I use it in conjunction with them, after I have already fatigued my legs, to overload my CNS, and I use it with the full range of motion. My thighs touch my chest at the bottom.
