I saw this on the news as well, and alot of the guys were talking about it at school.
Either way, Bush got lucky; pretty sure that Obama will take very strong precautions

The depressing thing is that I think Obama will need to take more precautions in the US than out of it. We don't want the KKK throwing shoes at him.

A forum search wouldn't even work- you can't read FaiD threads unless you've applied (which I neither have nor plan to do). And unknown acronyms are far more likely to be explained on a random site than on the xkcd fora.

Bakemaster wrote:"Insult" doesn't appear to be a crime. Insulting the government appears to be. And it's not like we don't have a comparable charge in the U.S.
Time to take this in a bizarre direction- was the reporter in question lawfully ordered to not throw his shoes at the president?

More seriously, it is true that the guy was disrupting a press conference- that's less serious than disrupting court proceedings, but it does make it more than if he had thrown his shoes at Bush elsewhere.

He should train his reflexes by having the Secret Service guys throw objects at him randomly throughout the day. While that would, in all likelihood, only serve to make Obama paranoid and skittish, it would be funny to see videos of it.

This reminds me of the ending to the first Austin Powers movie.

"you don't throw a shoe. Honestly!"

Well, probably because they're contradictory and the one I was quoting is more recent.
Totally not a hypothetical...

Well, nothing like lèse majesté can be pinned on the guy, right? :P

Anyway, follow-ups:

Marry my daughter!
Give him an award!
What, $ 10,000,000?!

My take: guy can't do moving targets. ;)

Al-Zaidi is being held for allegedly insulting a foreign leader, a charge that carries a maximum of two years in prison.
From the marriage proposal article.

Max sentence of two years seems surprisingly benign (as in, appropriate instead of draconian) for that sort of offense.

^ knew that. ;) I merely wanted to introduce some nice French into the discussion.

The joke going around where I live is that people will eventually use a flag that has a shoe in place of a crescent. :D

Actually, newly-released footage indicates that there was more than just shoes thrown at Bush.

Based on that, I'd agree with Vaniver that a two-year sentence is pretty mild! (Although, it is in an Iraqi jail...)

There's going to be political trouble if they don't find a way around jailing him though. He's a folk hero locally. They're also going to have to own up to beating the shit out of him while he was in custody.
