Burger King vs. Facebook

Postby LordHuffnPuff » Tue Jan 13, 2009 3:39 am UTC

Facebook's developer platform has been used for a zillion marketing campaigns so far, but this one is actually dead-on hilarious.

Fast-food chain Burger King has created "Whopper Sacrifice," a Facebook app that will give you a coupon for a free hamburger if you delete 10 people from your friends list.

...what?

I immediately took of 9 people I don't give a shit about on facebook, which was difficult, because I wanted to take off about 20, and one person as a joke. I refriended him and said "You are worth 1/10th of a whopper to me. Be my friend again"

I think it's a pretty hilarious and well thought out ad campaign. People'll be all "Ohh no he didn't!" and continue the meme.

Woo hoo! Three coupons!

Unfortunately, every Burger King in my town closed up and left (3 in three years) because no-one fucking ate there. At least my town has some taste.

This is an excellent idea. It give those of us who hate having large number of "friends" on Facebook, many of whom they hardly know an excuse to purge them. "Don't feel bad I quit having you as a friend. I got a free Whopper for it!"

I defriended without hesitation. 2-4 weeks for a whopper? I consider it, "looking out for future-Joe."

I think there's... One Burger King in Australia, unless, as I've suspected, Hungry Jacks is actually a renaming of Burger King, then there's lots.

None of this matters of course, since I don't have Facebook.

They're one and the same, yes.

I am definitely going to start friending all of my old high school acquaintances just so I can turn them all into Whoppers.
Totally not a hypothetical...

I bet some people are going to end up getting rid of friends that they wouldn't do for a whopper, because what if the friend gets rid of them first? then they won't have the friend or a whopper.

Yeah, but you can just refriend them. So why not get like 30 friends together and just repeatedly friend/unfriend each other and run BK out of business?

Or because the article states, "The promotion is limited to one coupon per Facebook account."

But I will totally do this. Free food? Heck yeah. I don't think I've ever had a Whopper, and I may never use the coupon, but I'm sure there's some fat I can trim, and I'll keep the coupon in my wallet on the off chance I am hungry and cash-less and near a Burger King.

I wonder if there's a database of all the accounts that have done this or if you can simply remove the app and then reinstall it...

I liked the Super Stampede burger I had in August, I will admit. I will also admit that there's a very good chance it's still stuck in my aorta.

Or, if you really had too much time on your hands, you could create 11 fake accounts, have them all friend each other, install the app, defriend, and get 11 whopper coupons. Why you would want 11 Whopper coupons I have no idea, but it would be a good waste of an afternoon.

And then BK won't serve the hobos, because they couldn't have a computer and therefore don't have a facebook account, then the hobos take BK to media-court, otherwise known as talk radio, and BK end up giving millions of hobos free meals to make up for it.

Awesome plan.

The people behind the counter really aren't paid enough to care about where the coupon came from. They are [probably / unfortunately] just going to try to get that smelly person out of the store as quickly as possible.

Exactly. Hence the trial by media, and the contrite BK giving homeless people free food! This cannot possibly in any way shape or form go wrong.

And back on topic, does this offer extend to the UK? I've got a few "friends" I wouldn't mind dumping for a free burger.

Thats pretty cool; its like something steven colbert would do to make people on the internet get riled up..

My favorite whopper commercial is still when they pretended to not sell the whopper anymore, and people flipped out at them.

Who in fucks name wants a whole roast chicken for lunch? Methinks you're missing the point of fast food joints.

But KFC is shit anyway. Nothing but skin and bones and grease and roaches. Terrible health record, in NZ at least.

What fast food franchises are in New Zealand? If Burger King is towards the top of the list, you can't have many.
