It was a perfectly normal day in the 8 person village of March. Until one of them was found killed with a stilleto in his back, left with an untraceable note: "Don't mess with the mafia." with a rose on top of the body. The townies got to thinking the mafia might have done it. But to save the town they had to figure out who was mafia. Though the town did have one retired cop who was very good at investigations (they didn't know who it was, he was an undercover cop!) there wasn't any kind of formal law in the village of March, so they just decided to lynch a person every day if they thought they might be the mafia. So it began!

Welcome to mafia. This is going to be what we call a "Vanilla" game, named after the tasty ice cream for being plain and with no weird twists that the pros like to eat, I mean use.

Here are the basic rules:

TOWNIES
The townies have no power besides the power of deduction. The Townie wants to rid the town of the mafia scum. Every day the townie can vote for one person by posting Vote:Person x (note that this must be bolded) if you later decide to switch your vote, you do so by typing UNVOTE vote:person y (note again that this must be bolded). Townies do not know who anyone else are.

MAFIA
The mafia's team usually is about one third the size of the townies. The mafia know who each other are, and try to blend in with the townies. Their goal is to rid the town of all the townies. They can vote and unvote just like normal townies. The only difference is that at night time the mafia can communicate (via pm's to eachother) and between all of the mafia, they can decide to kill someone at night.

VOTING
Now you may be wondering what this voting does. When a player has MORE than half the votes, they are lynched. Right after the lynching happens, it becomes night time.
The town wins when the last mafia member is wiped out. The mafia win when they control HALF of the votes.

Cop
The cop at night can investigate one person. They are told what alignment they are.

The cop is the only special role we will be using.

I will send out your role to you by PM (Private Message) and we will begin.

Additional rules: Roleclaiming yourself, saying you are the cop, is ok if you do not quote exactly what was said in your role pm. Paraphrasing is ok.

No time limits in this game.

No discussion of the game outside of this thread. At all. Unless you want to put up spoilers in the Discussion thread you can only talk about the game in this thread. That includes in real life or in the chat room.

No editing your posts. If you should feel the urge to edit something you've just posted you can only edit it by sending another post.

Basically all of the rules as laid out in the Newbs Guide need to be applied. I will not hesitate to modkill any serious rule infractions.

No, I don't think so. Well, you were supposed to confirm role receipt by PM rather than by posting, but I don't suppose that much matters. That was more to answer your question about whether the game has started yet, which I'm assuming it hasn't. We should hold off on voting and discussing who's scummy until Ruf announces the start of day 1. Also, we may get more information then. (Probably not, but you never know.)

There's no doctor, so the cop shouldn't claim unless they have a confirmed mafia hit.

First of all,

Since I cast my vote before day 1 had even started, I don't think it really counted, and I just wanted to see how Sje would react to such an early vote against him.

So, since there are only 7 of us, I think we can assume with 99% certainty that there are 2 scum to hunt down (if there were 3 scum, we would already be at a lynch or lose situation, and starting with only 1 scum would be almost as bizarre).

Again, since there is no doctor (Ruf stated that cop is the only special role), the cop will be at risk if (s)he roleclaims, so I recommend the cop should try to avoid roleclaiming (if the cop can subtly sway opinion without roleclaiming, this is the best) unless 1 scum is already lynched and 2nd scum is found.

Obviously, if a lynching party starts gaining momentum with the cop as a target, (s)he will be tempted to roleclaim as a last resort, but only do this if things get really desperate, and then be sure to share results of all investigations (regardless of result), so even if the cop is nightkilled, us townies will at least have some solid info of who is/isn't scum.

Also, it should not be too surprising if we end up in a lynch or lose situation (3 townies and both scum left) on day 2. If that happens, don't panic, but it would be great to lynch scum on day 1 and get the odds in our favor. So scum, please do something stupid and give yourselves away.

Right now I don't really want to vote anyone until everyone has checked in. Nobody has done anything to attract my ire/suspicion yet. Agree that cop shouldn't roleclaim yet (that's pretty obvious). Once we get to lylo I may do some mathematical analysis to determine whether it would be beneficial for our cop to roleclaim. The result, of course, would depend on whether there are any hits, but I can post all possibilities.

Matthias apologizes; he was yanked away from internet access for the last 24 hours due to job issues which he cannot reveal the specifics of. (For those not in the know, he is in the military.)

He expresses ambivalence about the alignment of persons in the game; it has, after all, barely begun, so it would be difficult to judge anyone's intentions just yet. Matthias would voice one further thought: if lylo arises, the cop should roleclaim if s/he has any confirmed mafia investigations. As this probably goes without saying, Matthias mourns his lack of further constructive input.

Matthias scratches his chin, wondering how long 'twill be before third person narrative grows wearisome.
