Favorite Musical Character

Postby videogamesizzle » Sat Jan 10, 2009 6:27 am UTC

when a musical artist writes a song, he must put meaning and feeling into it. Artists use many mediums to display this, from settings to sounds. one major way they do this is through characters in the song who embody the qualities needed. many songs have done this, from The Beatles "Nowhere Man" to Jethro Tull's "Aqualung."

so my question, xkcd, is this: who are your favorite musical characters? this can be based on morals, physical looks (or how you imagine them to look), or just general badassery. really, it's up to you.

Always has been, and probably always will be: Alice Cooper's Steven. He's a character that has been being developed over 30 years and at least 5 or 6 albums in at least two mediums.

Baal aka Peter as he appears in almost every song written by Jim Steinman.

Also the narrator of Weird Al's epic Albuquerque.

The Lord in Chris De Burgh's The Tower. He's so very, very tragic, and so stupid, and lovelorn.

This thread needs some P-Funk! Let's see... we've got Starchild, Dr. Funkenstein, The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein, Sir Nose D'voidoffunk, Rumpofsteelskin, and Mr. Wiggles. It has to be the most complex mythology ever created musically.

I would say the character Pink Floyd from The Wall. Hell of a trip he takes through life.

The guy from Deadwing by Porcupine Tree.
I can most accurately describe Death From Above 1979's genre as "Heavy Indie Alternative Progressive Punkcore Dance Funk Metal"

The guy from Mastodon's Blood Mountain. Plenty of trials and tribulations to be had. The main character has to eat his own hand.

Probably the Stormrider from Iced Earth's Night of the Stormrider album. I'm a sucker for concept albums.

I'm quite a fan of Sir Lollipop Man, alias the Long-Haired Sucker, even if (to my knowledge) he only comes up in one song.

Blaise Bailey Finnigan the Third, off BBFIII by Godspeed You! Black Emperor. This guy is too fucked to be real (also stealing Iron Maiden had a lot to do with it).

I can't belive no one has mentioned the Alpha Couple by the Mountain Goats.

Wikipedia says:
Spoiler:
"Songs in this category concern the same fictional couple, described as a heterosexual lower-middle-class man and woman who originally loved each other genuinely, and held generally ordinary concerns for one another's well-being, but whose relationship has degraded for a variety of reasons, most often a series of fights or drug and/or alcohol abuse, possibly both.[2] Whatever the causes for their current situation, their love has not so much died as warped into the sincere, all-consuming desire of each of them to see the other drink themselves to death; thus, to facilitate this "walk down to the bottom", as described in the liner notes, the couple keep whatever liquor they can afford on hand for each other and stay together.

The album Tallahassee, being entirely about the Alpha couple, begins with the pair buying a run-down house in the eponymous capital of Florida, follows their degradation, and ends with a vision of the house and both of them being consumed in flames. Other songs not found on Tallahassee, however, usually named "Alpha" in part to signify that they're about the couple, deal with similar situations, if not the same situation. "

And there are like 30 other "Alpha" songs.

"No Children:
Spoiler:
I hope that our few remaining friends
Give up on trying to save us
I hope we come up with a failsafe plot
To piss off the dumb few that forgave us
I hope the fences we mended
Fall down beneath their own weight
And I hope we hang on past the last exit
I hope it's already too late
And I hope the junkyard a few blocks from here
Someday burns down
And I hope the rising black smoke carries me far away
And I never come back to this town
Again in my life
I hope I lie
And tell everyone you were a good wife
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow
I hope it bleeds all day long
Our friends say it's darkest before the sun rises
We're pretty sure they're all wrong
I hope it stays dark forever
I hope the worst isn't over
And I hope you blink before I do
Yeah I hope I never get sober
And I hope when you think of me years down the line
You can't find one good thing to say
And I'd hope that if I found the strength to walk out
You'd stay the hell out of my way
I am drowning
There is no sign of land
You are coming down with me
Hand in unlovable hand
And I hope you die
I hope we both die

It's such an original idea, and John Darnielle's masterful songwriting really makes it story and not just words for the sake of rhymes.

The characters on All Hail West Texas are quite good as well, though not as strictly defined (and I think, though I'm not positive, that they include the alpha couple).

Spaceturtle from Behold.. the arctopus' "you will be reincarnated as an imperial attack spaceturtle". I imagine him to be some sort of turtle flying through an epic space battle, fighting against giant and small enemies.

Narrator of "The Mariner's Revenge" from the Decemberists. I just marvel sometimes at how beautifully that song was written.

Eleanor Rigby -- The Beatles
Short Skirt, Long Jacket -- Cake
Sukie in the Graveyard -- Belle and Sebastian

Although this is not one of my very favorites, I feel I cannot go without mentioning The Greatest Man That Ever Lived -- Weezer.
