Funny thing, this. I'll be back in town next week, but not for this week. Thought I'd check to see if any meet-ups were going on while I'd be in town but guess I missed it by a week. :( I need up to hurry up and get back over there so I can be all awkward with you people!

Well, it was very fun. Played some Race for the Galaxy, and something else after I had to leave. I lost Race for the Galaxy, but that's only because military conflict wasn't built into the game rules.

I'm back from my trip to Vegas now. So, I'm up for any other meetup in the near, mid, or far future. I'll need to take a break for a little bit, but if anyone wants to suggest a meetup, then please do so.

I check this thread very regularly, so, if you suggest a meetup here then I'll keep the title and first post updated. KF

If it's not too soon for people that have been to recent ones, I will be in town for certain on the weekends surrounding Christmas. Though the 20/21st of December may not be a good idea due to so many reasons, I can imagine the 27/28th being pretty calm on the outside world. Since it's after Christmas perhaps there will be less being-with-family-every-day-requirements for people as well.

Re: Washington DC Meetup - Katsucon/anything in April?

Postby Kizyr » Thu Feb 12, 2009 10:19 pm UTC

Ok, bumping this thread with an update. Two things:

First: Is anyone else going to Katsucon 15 this weekend (www.katsucon.org)? It's at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, Arlington, VA. It's right down the street from my apartment, so I'll probably go in at least on Saturday, if not the full weekend.

If anyone else is going, please respond or PM me if you'd like; maybe we can meet up there.

Second: Is anyone else interested in a meetup in the near future? I'm thinking April, since it usually takes a little while to plan a good meetup like this. If anyone is game, start shouting out days in April you think you'll be free. KF

I went to Katsucon! Didn't know I was going early enough to try and meet up with anyone, though.

As far as I know, I'm available all of April, and prefer Saturdays to Sundays.

Sounds good so far! My preference is the 18th. I don't think I have anything going on then, and I think that gives enough time to put something together and get folks to show.

I'm still hoping for one of these days to have a similar showing as we had at that first meetup, with, like, 12 or so people.

So, anyone else?

Roughly the same situation for me. It sort of snuck up on me; I forgot about it 'til the week before the convention. I did run into both Risu and Kyle, though. KF

Oh, nearly forgot about something. April 18th is going to be during the cherry blossoms; unless there's another cold snap that kills them off this year (like in 2007), then we can expect some celebrations that weekend.

I'll check with Risu and see if she and Kyle can make it then. But, we could do something centered around the Cherry Blossom Festival this time, instead of the usual Teaism thing. KF

I believe the festival ends on the 12th, so the 18th would be a little late. On the 4th, I'll be teaching people to play go at Sakura Matsuri, if anyone wants to say hi.

I'm still aiming for the level of that first meetup, which ended up being something like 12 people overall. The last couple of times, it's been about 4-7.

Steve wrote:Kizyr, if you can do the 12th I'm sure there will be something fairly big for the cherry blossom festival then.

The 11th (Saturday) might be a possibility (Sundays usually don't get good turnout, as many folks are busy or have errands to run that day). The only problem is that it's really crowded around that time, so it's a little prohibitive for larger groups. Each time I've been to the festival with other people, it's been maybe a group of 3-4 at most.

So, it's either 11th during the actual Sakura Matsuri, or the 18th without all the crowds (the cherry blossoms themselves should still be in bloom, though). Does anyone else want to try for the 11th? KF

So, according to a facebook group, April 17th is Velociraptor Awareness Day. Are we interested in trying to do something with that theme, or just do our regular stuff?

Well, given the timeframe, I don't think getting something together just on the 11th-12th would work. I'll probably still go to the Sakura Matsuri that weekend, so if anyone wants to go, we can meet up there (can't do this weekend, unfortunately).

So, does the 18th still work for people? Anyone want to still do the usual (Teaism in the early afternoon) or what? As always, I'm open to other places in the area, maybe something in Georgetown (I know a few good places there, but not as inexpensive). KF

18th still works. Teaism seems like the best plan; I will probably bring a game or two (but as most of the games I have work best with 6 or less people, other people bringing things is strongly recommended).

Interestingly, there's an Chanology protest on the 18th less than a block from a teaism, though not the teaism we've met at before.

I've been to the Dupont Circle teaism. It's pretty nice, though there's considerably less room inside (i.e., less likely we'd find a spot to sit if there are more than 4 of us). Either way, I'd still like to stop by and see the protest--we can get cake afterwords if folks want (pun intended).

Tentatively, let's stick with the Archives/Navy Memorial Teaism (check first post if you need directions). If there're just a few people, we can move it to the Dupont Circle one--otherwise, we can metro it up to Dupont later in the day.

Two more important items here:
First, what time works out for everyone? 2:00PM? (I think that leaves enough time open in the afternoon. But I'm open to suggestions.)

Second, official list of who all is planning to come:
Kizyr
Vaniver+1
NathanielK (right?)
Silas
UV_Catastrophe (can you still make it?)
CoyoteDen

I tried to contact Risu but couldn't get ahold of her. I'll try email next and send a PM to everyone in case some folks aren't following the thread. KF

Yeah, I'll come. But please send me the street address of the place we're meeting, or directions from the metro station; I don't know Dupont Circle or Penn Station very well.

I'll bring a pack of cards, but there's not a lot for many people to do with them; I know games for four or five people, but above that, it's touch-and-go.

No problem; there's a link, address, etc. in the first post (I update it each time there's a new announcement).

It's at 400 8th Street NW. The closest metro is Archives/Navy Memorial. If you exit the metro, go into the plaza in front of the escalators and turn right (between the two buildings), and Teaism is just across the street on the corner of 8th and D.

Ok folks, this Saturday!

Anyway, the weather is supposed to be really nice on Saturday. I'm thinking we might spend like an hour or hour and a half at Teaism, and if folks are up to it, go up to Dupont Circle to see the Project Chanology thing (I don't have any masks, so I'm not up for being in the protest, just watching). If nothing else, there are a ton more restaurants/cafes in Dupont Circle thereafter.

I still can't get ahold of Risu--calling her cell gets a "this number is no longer in service", and I don't have her email... Last I saw her was at Katsu (February) when her phone was working, so I'm stumped. KF

Hm, it might be a bit of a trek, but it's definitely feasible. I would recommend going by rail if you can, as the trip would be more predictable (you can pull into Union Station, then hop on the Red Line to Gallery Place, and walk a couple blocks south and one block west (to 7th and D Streets)--we'll be sitting on the lower floor of Teaism, most likely; you can look for some folks playing tabletop games, or just PM me for my cell number. The total trip would be, what, 3 hours by rail? You could be back in Delaware in plenty of time. (Though if I were you, I'd come in early in the day and make a day-trip out of it.)

Anyway, see y'all tomorrow! KF

Well, that was a pretty awesome meetup! If anyone's wondering, we had six folks there:
- Silas
- NathanielK
- CoyoteDen
- Kizyr
- Vaniver
- Rensis (EDIT: not the Ren who posts on these forums)

After hanging out at Teaism for a bit, we went over to see a bit of the Project Chanology thing outside the Scientology center, then Kramerbooks/Afterwords for dessert, and then played cards in Dupont Circle, since the weather was amazing yesterday.

So yeah, that was a lot of fun. We gotta do this again soon. I'm going to make an Otakon thread in early May to set up a meetup for that (Otakon is July 17-19 in Baltimore).

But in the meantime, or thereafter, if anyone wants to set up another XKCD-DC meetup then feel free to post in this thread. I'll update the topic thread and first post accordingly. KF

I'm definitely up for a summertime meetup, or two. I'm also going to be going to Otakon in Baltimore (July 17th-19th), so I'll try to see if we can't organize another meetup then and there. But another DC one would be great regardless. KF

From what I gathered in reading this thread, Teaism is far and away an amazing place for a meetup. It definitely needs to be in late May/June though, so it fits between second semester and summer semester.

Well, Teaism is great on account of the fact that they don't mind you staying there for like 3 hours playing card games. Anything café style like that would work out (frankly, I wouldn't mind finding another place--I like Teaism and all, but I go there rather often as it is). KF
