Jumping Stilts

Postby Zapheod » Thu Apr 30, 2009 7:53 pm UTC

Bought an electric skateboard a few months ago and while it is interesting it is entirely too passive a form of transport.

Wondering if anyone has any experience with Jumping Stilts and would care to share?

I really hate driving and am trying to find an entertaining mode of transport for short trips(3-10 mile range). These would probably just be used to go to and from work since I can't really see going grocery shopping in them.

My friend has a pair of those. They're easier to use than regular stilts.

You should ride a unicycle instead.

Don't know whether it's weirder to look like Chell, or a circus nutcase.

I myself went circus nutcase.
Why is it that 4chan is either infinitely awesome, infinitely bad, or "lolwut", but never any intermediary level?

I could never use those. I would be on my butt more from falling than actually walking in them. I have always wanted a pair though. If you get a pair will you tell us how they turn out?

Ooooh how I want a pair of those shinies. There are tons of videos on Youtube with people vaulting over stuff, doing flips and backflips and sideflips and flipflips and whoah I just want them.
I don't twist the truth, I just make it complex.

I've had a go on jumping stilts. They're actually pretty easy to get used to, but defo take it easy at first. Don't try any of the jumping around like a loon until you can cope with simpler stuff like walking and running. Make sure you're on a large flat surface when you first start out - sounds silly but children's play areas are quite good, as they're usually made so it doesn't hurt so much when you fall over.

I friend of mine has those. My housemate had a go in the park and fell off, taking all of the skin off his shins. I decided not to have a go.

I really hate to necro-thread, but having just bought a pair, I felt I should brag chime in with my 3 weeks' experience on them in somewhat frequent use.

Pros:
-easy to learn walking and running
-the fall isn't that bad
-the looks you get are priceless, especially from old folks
-you feel like a cyborg
-you meet cool folks
-running and jumping with springs is so much fun
-you can steal someone's thunder (showy skateboarder, outdoor preacher, etc...)
-you get featured in videos and pictures

Cons:
-stopping and jumping take a few spills to get the hang of
-you're 7-8 feet in the air, plan routes accordingly
-leaves can cause problems
-your feet feel very flat after using them
-you will fall, you will get scrapes and bruises, you will hit your head on things over you if you aren't careful
-you get featured in videos and pictures

All in all, I think they're worth every penny.
