The new unlock system is reaaaallllyy annoying! I fail to see how idling to get weapons is better than achievement farming :(.

New update. http://store.steampowered.com/news/2540/

Steampowered wrote: * The Ambassador now does full critical hits on headshots, instead of mini crits
* The Dead Ringer now fully drains the cloak meter, even if the Spy leaves cloak early
* Fixed Spy disguise menu not being visible in HUD minimal mode
* Server log improvements:
o Added "player_extinguish" event for servers to log when a Pyro extinguishes flame with the airburst
o Fixed kill descriptions for Force-A-Nature & Sandman, so server logs can distinguish them
o Identified feign deaths in the events sent to server logs
* Fixed server crash related to the Jarate

I can take the Dead Ringer nerf, and this solves basically all my problems with the update, besides the broken unlock system.
All is well. We are not like the others.

so, that makes two updates so far without fixing the blatantly and admittedly broken 'random' unlock system.

Someone will pay in blood for my continuing inability to experience any of the new content first hand.

I haven't tried an Idle server yet (I still have hope that Valve will fix the problem sometime this week) but I have played enough to figure out that I'm probably one of the few that are screwed until there's a fix, after the first few hours (when I got two items I already had) I haven't gotten anything, new or old.

i have a feeling that the game gives you what you DONT particularly want. At first i really wanted the sniper stuff but after 2 or 3 days i got bored and just started playing normally and i got both jarate and huntsman within and hour. Then after that i decided i REALLY wanted one of the new spy watches and didn't cae much for ambassador. after 6 hours...Vivek has found Ambassador. Gargh! even when you get a new weapon you still feel cheated by this system

This game needs a horadric cube equivalent: Put three weapons of one tier (main, alter, melee) and get a random new one of the same tier that is not any of the ingredients. :P

Shortly after finding the Huntsman I found a Sniper hat! If trading were in I'd probably trade the hat for another class's hat, though. I don't play Sniper much.

I'm actually finding the unlock system a bit frustrating. I thought I would enjoy it, but playing for hours and gaining nothing is frustrating. Plus, I had zero unlocks, so I should have been getting all sorts of new things, right? Wrong. I've only gotten three drops, and one of them was a second Dead Ringer. Augh.

See, if you play with the intention to unlock things, the game will figure that out and punish you appropriately. If you play to have fun, things go by a lot easier as you burn up stupid spies and snipers everywhere. It's like watching a pot - it won't boil faster if you keep staring at it.

(Has all the unlocks he wants)

Fair enough. I think I was partially frustrated because the server I last played on wasn't that good.

Also, random question time: has anyone else had their server list turned from the very functional text-based list to the pretty-but-kinda-sucky more graphical one, where you can't do nice things like sort by number of players? And more importantly, do they know how to turn the latter mode off?

well, the floodgates opened for me, sort of. I now have several extra KGBs, an extra sandvich and an extra Bonk.

But I also have a single, glorious Ambassador, the one new weapon I wanted most.

Whether this means the system has been fixed or that I just have hit a lucky streak I dunno, but I hope for everyone else's sake it's the former.

Ooh, newsworthy.
Up until last week...TF2 was hitting maximum concurrency numbers of 32,000 players; over Memorial Day weekend, however, that more than doubled to 68,000. (The single best sales day was also last weekend.)

Finally, FINALLY getting items. I had to:

1) Log into Steam friends (this part has been officially verified as necessary)
2) Change my in-game name to match my Steam username (i.e. remove clan tags)

I don't know if this will work for you, but it's what works for me. Got Jarate and the Huntsman so far.

I had been logged in to Steam friends, but I only started getting items with what I would consider a reasonable frequency last night (haven't checked to see if that will continue to day)

My in-game name and steam username are not even similar, so I don't think that has any effect.

Just a coincidence, I think. My Steam username and in-game name are completely different, but I've gotten lots of items (most of which I already had). Whatever works, though, I guess.

And I finally got Jarate, so now I must go throw some pee on my enemies. :D

A long time ago, there used to be a command that unlocked achievements which as a result unlocked weapons, but it was quickly removed. Now there's just an exploit that lets you pretend you get items; that is, it just prints the message "Player X found item Y".

No but idling in an achievement_idle server for 10 hours at a stretch will net me all the items I want too, and while I sleep. Hopefully valve will implement the "- Giving players a method to influence the system so they can work directly toward getting specific items" action item on their website.

I'm only missing one item and I played maybe 3 hours over memorial day weekend. Before bed I just boot up my dedicated and join it with my tf2 client. Hours later and many happy returns on items.

i'm running this program that fakes idling so you can get unlocks. the guy who wrote sourcemod programmed it, so i'm pretty ok with running it on my computer. it's only netted me 2 nataschas, a kritzkrieg and a kgb though :(

wtb huntsman, it's the only new unlock i don't have.

New update.

* Added Sniper/Spy milestone achievements as an additional way players can get the new unlockables
* Arena Mode
o Added tf_arena_use_queue server convar. Turn this on to get the old queue behavior. Default is off
o Added tf_arena_round_time to set a timelimit on the round
* Added the userid of the player who built the teleporter to the "player_teleported" event
* Fixed player killed event causing server crash
* Fixed Spies not being telefragged when standing on an enemy teleporter exit with the Dead Ringer enabled
* Fixed attackers seeing the mini-crit particle effect for full crits if the victim has the Jarate effect enabled
* Fixed the Ambassador not doing damage to buildings
* Fixed Spies disguised as their own team not drawing blood effects
* Fixed players killed by flaming arrows not showing the appropriate death icon

Apparently, these milestones are for lower numbers of achievements as well - 5, 10, and 15 (not counting milestones).

Man, I'm really happy they added in achievements, if only because I had like 17 spy achievements and was happily surprised when suddenly all of the new Spy items ended up in my inventory at once. (I finally got Cloak and Dagger! *excited*). Of course, now I have a duplicate Dead Ringer and a duplicate Ambassador, but I'm not complaining. :D
