Dropping In: The Drum & Bass Thread

Ah, Drum & Bass, what do most people think when they hear the combination of those two words?
Most likely "Gee Willikers THUNKA THUNKA THUNK BOOM TSHH BOOM TSHH RAVERAVERAVETHUNKA THUNKA THUNKA" And yeah, there is that side to it.
But D&B is also so much more, and that's why i want you all to share your love for Britain's finest export since... well, ever, really.

Never listened to it? Give it a go. If you like Electronic music, especially focusing on epic breaks sequenced alongside pulsing subsonic basslines and all manner of influences, then you can't go far wrong.

A very interesting branch of D&B that i'm especially infatuated with at the moment is the 'Liquid" Drum & Bass subgenre (sometimes referrred to as Liquid Funk), which combines the standard fast breakbeats, deep basslines and epic buildups, with a much larger range of instrumental layers, harmonies and ambience to create an awesome style of music that you can party and chill to. Especially noted examples are the entire Hospital Records recording label, currently one of the largest labels on the D&B scene. Google 'em. You won't be dissapointed. Also lookup a fantastic producer called London Elektricity for some top-notch tunes.

Of course, there's plenty of other Drum & Bass styles, including Acid, jungle, Breakbeat, Dubstep etc., so it's just the icing on the cake.

Any other D&B fans on the xkcd fora? What's your favourite style/artist? Stand up and make yourself known!

Hi. I like D&B, amongst other things. My favourite DnB mix ever is probably Pendulum's Essential Mix from 2005, but I do occasionally hop onto dnbtracker.com and download some I like the look of.

I do a bit of DJing as well, haven't bought any dnb records in a while but have some records by the likes of Black Sun Empire, Total Science, Hype (of course), Roni Size (of course), Cut & Run (I was also into nu-skool breaks)... that kind of thing.

Thanks for the heads up re: hospital records, will definitely try them out.

Edit: just remembered, did a dnb mix a couple of years ago which is still up on my website: http://phillsacre.me.uk/2007/03/11/new-dnb-mix/ - that's the kind of stuff I like, even if it's a bit random :)

I just recently discovered a love of D&B.

Is dubstep really a subgenre of D&B? because I even more recently discovered a love of dubstep as well.

Any suggestions for what to look for for both?

I'm also really interested in seeing some heavily jazz influenced D&B. I want to see how the two types of music would intersect.
Oh. Well that's alright then.

I think the latter group is awesome.
