University of Texas at Austin
I'm going into my senior in high school and it's time to start picking out schools to apply to. I want to go to a UC school, but their standards are ridiculously high and I'm only in the top 10% of my class. Recently someone suggested that I apply to University of Austin. I plan on dual majoring in general physics and microbiology, so does anyone know if they have a good science department in these fields?

I'm not entirely sure what school you're talking about. Perhaps you mean the University of Texas at Austin?

Yeah, I do. Sorry about the miscommunication, I got about 5 hours of sleep.

Being a large research university that's known for science, I'm pretty sure UT is strong in those fields. I don't go there though, so I can't give you first-hand knowledge.

I'm living here in Austin and am currently in high school, too. My parents both went to and one of them teaches, at UT, so I obviously have a bit of a bias.
Physics (http://www.ph.utexas.edu/):
We have a a pretty awesome physics department. In the basement of the physics building, we also have one of the world's most powerful lasers, weighing in at 1.1 petawatts (10^15). Pew pew pew: http://www.ph.utexas.edu/~utlasers/ The physics program is 16th in the nation.
Microbiology:
I don't know too much about UT's microbiology program, but it is pretty decent and we've got a few of the necessary grant and award winning faculty and students. It's around 18th in the nation, last time I checked.
Austin:
This city is awesome. Don't come here (or have travel plans) if you don't like hot weather, though; it's 104 degrees right now.

Re: University of Texas at Austin
I am attending there this fall, and have several friends in science-y type fields (I am business/finance). UT has an amazing Physics program with very well known professors.
I don't really know specifics, but I do remember my AP Physics C teacher mentioning it to my class last year. Apparently some big names in Physics went down there to start some program and it has become really well known and very good.

tl;dr - I said nothing important.

I currently live in Florida, so the heat shouldn't be a problem.

Ah you'll also be ready for the occasional tropical storm or hurricane.
