[UK] Edinburgh August Meetup!

Postby Dream » Mon Jun 29, 2009 7:46 pm UTC

Ok, various people have told me personally they're going to be up Auld Reekie way around August, and various other people have posted in the Scotland thread about August being a time that an Edinburgh Meet might go over well. Red Hal and I will be getting together at some stage, and an wholesale awesome big meetup should be arranged.

It will be festival time, so think hard about accommodation. But something will go ahead, so help me god. Anyone in?

Wait, does that make sense? Leaving on the 10th, but arriving on the 15th?

But YAY! Can't wait :)

Well, I should be able to come out anytime around then. Can't help anyone with accommodation, I'm afraid, though - I live at home until September, and I have the kind of parents who probably wouldn't want strange people from the internets to stay over.

While I have no dates to suggest, I live down in Newcastle and would be interested to pop up on the train for a day trip and xkcd meetups. I'm fairly available throughout all the summer.

And for the record, I am available at all times. I can probably have people stay, in that there is space, but I don't even know my new flatmates yet so I can't say. Anyone who's here from foreign shores can rely on me for guiding and such things too, because I'll be around and I supposedly know the place.

Hey, just a head's up to say I'm in Edinburgh pretty much the whole of August, so I'd be up for any meet-ups happening around then.

Since we'll be coming back down on the 28th, I'd much prefer to meet up early evening in Edinburgh, once we are done adventuring, for a meal somewhere. How does that sound to y'all?

So ideas. I wants to eat, and by that, I mean I want a place that sells burgers. Probably looking at the 6:00-7:00mark, since the cool stuff probably closes at five.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on places me an Amy should view (That are cheap, I am a poor boy) then please, let us know.

Food is good.

Already have on the list the castle and also Arthur's Seat walk thing because that seems cool. Walking should be free, teehee.

LE4dGOLEM wrote:Walking from the castle to arthurs seat is like two hours

Only if you follow me, as I pipe in a pied manner.

It's about a mile from the castle to the crags, which are the near part of the volcano. The peak, Arthur's seat is maybe a mile further on foot, less as the crow flies, and obviously a fair bit upwards. If you don't make it that far, there are still the crags themselves, and Calton Hill, where Le4d, tin cheese and I went. Either of those still has awesome views of the city and they are interesting of themselves.

For doings and eatings:

If a pub-grub style burger is a plan, you'll have lots of options. If you want more restaurant-like things I might not be the best person to ask, 'cause I don't eat out here much. If you want Indian, there is a totally cheap place called the Mosque Kitchen that I can highly recommend, or a takeaway called Kebab Mahal.

Free things to do... leave a lot of time for exploring. And bring your walking legs, and shoes. Edinburgh is built on at least two volcanoes, and it fully glaciated, so hills are the order of the day. It's a lot of effort, but if you miss all the wynds and closes and suchlike, you'll have missed most of the city. The city centre is split roughly into Old Town and New Town, both of which are worth the time to explore. Old is medieval, New is Georgian to Edwardian. The former is a mess of cool twisty ancient streets, the latter is highly planned and beautifully laid out. There are two big museums, The National and Royal, though most of the Royal is closed at the moment. Both are well worth it and free. The National Galleries are also fantastic if you like art and suchlike. There is an excellent permanent collection, and a touring exhibit of Spanish art. The Castle also includes the Scottish War Museum, which I recall being pretty good.

Ok, more later, I'm running out of steam here.

If ye are interested in pub action in the evening, there is absolutely tons to choose from. I'm sure Hal or I can scare up something suitably awesome.

2 miles takes 2 hours?? wha?
I walk 3-4 miles per hour... uphill probably slower esp if looking around a lot. Anyway though.

Yes I actually just got new walking shoes and am breaking them in. I love them. So comfy.

You're taking me with you, don't forget. The man of bad ankles. But I figure we go to the castle straightaway, enjoy that, get some lunch/walk to Arthur's Seat, walk round Arthur's Seat if I haven't collapsed, then walk back and meet up with people for food, time allowing. If not, Castle one day, Seat the other? Entirely up to you, I'm just going to feel weird being in Edinburgh again.

Ahhh. I'm sorry, I forgot.

Well, whatever. We can play it by ear :) And yeah, can always do one thing one day, then the other the next.

Honestly it's been a while since I've walked more than three miles in one hike too. Uphill tends to kill my knee faster too.

...bugger. Trust my sister to organise some get-togethery thing on the evening of the 27th.
Might be able to meet people depending on who all's been invited to this get-togethery thing (if it's mostly her old school friends I'd be out of place anyway, but I'd not want to bugger off if it was mostly family), I'll update when I have more of an idea.

Well August is a very exciting time here in Scotland's capital. It is certainly a good time to visit if you want to see Edinburgh at its most lively. The festival tends to swell the population somewhat.

The best burger in Edinburgh bar none is available at the Roseleaf Bar in Leith.

One of the other plus points of having a meet here in August is that the pubs have extended licensing hours...

Just don't expect there to be any available accommodation or anything to be cheap.

I already have accommodation taken care of so no worries there.

And what is the deal with pubs? Is that all you folks do? :P I think the official sport of the UK is going to pubs or something.

You say it like it's a problem...

There is plenty to do and see here in August, it is the Festival after all... It's just that most of the Fringe events are in pubs... well the cheap ones anyway.

It's just different. I've never had a drink, just never been into that sorta thing. Although I gather it is more a social thing there from what I hear. At least in the US, those types of atmospheres I just don't consider fun.

You don't have to drink to go to a pub... A pub is just that: a Public House... A place to go and be sociable. Yes they sell alcoholic beverages, but most of the good ones in Edinburgh also do tea/coffee etc. Some even do food now  In fact here in Leith (famous for being where Trainspotting is set) has several pubs in the Michelin Guide...

There are pubs I won't go to because of the atmosphere/clientele, but such is life.

Yeah, to save some confusion on the part of our American cousins it is important to say that there IS a difference between a pub and a bar. A bar is where you go specifically to drink, a pub is oh-so-much more. Most of the ones I frequent serve food, and alchohol is not the main priority, so a much nicer atmosphere than a bar.
