A couple of weeks ago we watched Cloverfield in my IRC channel (#xkcd-hugs, on irc.foonetic.net), was good fun. I decided to make a movie night a regular thing. What you do is watch the movie, while chatting about it. In fact, I made a small, simple webpage which can facilitate this:
http://xkcd.raptorswithhats.com.
This is the channel, good for people with actual installed clinets:
irc://irc.foonetic.net/#xkcd-hugsEveryone is invited, of course

The Fifth Element. This one has the bonuses of being one of the most awesome films in all of time ever, with the ability to also dip in and out if needs be (so you can actually chat to peeps)
Either that or Rocky Horror

I would be interested in this, I hate watching films alone, as I love talking about films whilst watching them.
I second almost every suggestion in this thread, with emphasis on Princess Bride and Fifth Element

I vote for Fifth Element also. Saw it the other day for the first time and it was a pretty damn good film.
Or maybe Pitch Black.

We could start with Stargate, then finish with Stargate; taking in every episode in between.... ?

No, Firefly first.
And yes, The Fifth Element, because I have it coming from Netflix next, and I have never seen it before.

Nah, Stargate first; because then any true sci-fi fan will survive the 16 days straight required to watch it in order to watch Firefly.

Should I put up a poll?
Also, what time? And where do I find these movies? Don't link directly, because this is Against The Rules.

watch movies links.
Cept hyphenated. And with a .net at the end. That's the easiest place to find lists of links to places to watch.
Also. I think maybe we should start by establishing a specific genre each week. Then move on from there, that way we don't have people debating over six different movies of six different themes.

Please come in at 2AM GMT, which is 10PM East Coast American time (9 central). The room is
http://mibbit.com/chat/#xkcd-hugs@irc.foonetic.net for everyone without an installed client. I added a poll. Please pick the two you most want, and you can change your mind. Sorry for the lack of time to vote.
EDIT: my joke backfired >.< 9 central, of course. I would think that after a year of talking to people around the world everyday I would figure that out already.

In case of a tie breaker, remove one vote from 5th Element and 2001; I voted before realising that this will be played at 3AM for me (I'm in France ATM).
Once I get back to Birmingham and start going out/staying up for no real reason on Friday nights, you can expect to see me there! (NB: In the former case, I will most likely be drunk though)

Just a quick note, wouldn't that be 9pm central?

Princess Bride will be showing at some point between 10 and 10:30. Please inform me ASAP if there is a problem. You don't have to use Mibbit.

Come in NOW.
EDIT:
It was pretty successful. There were some sychronization problems, and my Tudou had trouble catching up. We have to do this streaming.
I'm going to do three days of nominations, and three or four days of voting. You can suggest any thing you want, really, even if it already has been. I don't want to do it at the same time and day, though, because a lot of people will miss out. So when next weekend do you want to do this?

I vote no, 2AM GMT is perfect: I'm looking forward to stumbling back from a night out, pissed as a fart, and watching a good film at stupid-o'clock with some XKCDers.

Staying up til 2 AM is doable.. staying up til 4 or 5 isn't really. That's the problem I had last night. Made it to 2, but knew I couldn't stay up for the whole movie.

Perhaps more like midnight GMT then? It would be 5pm-8pm in the US, which would be a bit early but still okay I think. I can't make it next week anyhow though, so don't let my opinion matter too much.
