Writing a post-apocalyptic novel

Postby David Demola » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:51 pm UTC

Hey everybody,

As the subject line states, I'm writing a post-apocalyptic novel.

It's going to be composed of journal entries from characters in the world, as well as the usual novel narrative third-person omniscient style. Some of these journals will be posted in the Blogger spot, but it'll mostly consist of journal entries on the writing process.

The main story is about the struggle to reestablishing government after nuclear fallout.

I've got the first journal entry posted on my blogger account, and I'm looking for opinions or thoughts on what I've written - serious thoughts only, please.

Please don't be afraid to give opinions and sharing ideas.

Having said all that: if this is ruled as being spam, I apologize. My intentions here are honest.

Interesting concept :)

As far as style and inspiration goes I'd personally recommend Max Brooks' World War Z, where this journalist(?) interviews people from different nations after this catastrophic zombie pandemic. It's pretty well-researched, I particularly love how he explores the effect zombies had on the environment, the economy, global politics, society and stuff.

this. World War Z is actually very similar to the style you plan to use and looks into how the world rebuilds itself after total chaos.

Yeah, WWZ is probably the most similar book I can think of. It's a collection of interviews. Unlike yours, there's no narration at all.

And by the way, if it's anywhere in the near future, some of them should be blog posts. Nothing can destroy the internet.

That is so strange.. I was considering making a post of my plans of a novel(still coming together though) of post-apocalypticness and I saw this... mine would be a bit different from yours though it turns out after reading your post lol

Love the concept. For some reason, I am reminded of a DOS game from ages ago where you tried to survive a post-nuclear holocaust. One scene had you in a grocery store, and you could choose whether or not to eat the contents of an unlabelled can. Sometimes, it would help you, sometimes, you would get salmonella and die painfully.

Good times.

Anyway, I'll be checking the blog.
