How often do you shower or bathe?

Postby markiiu » Mon Aug 31, 2009 2:29 am UTC

I had a disagreement with a friend recently over the importance of showering/bathing. I believe that it's best to shower or bathe daily, and I tend to feel pretty sweaty/dirty if I go more than 24 hours without one, but he argues that it's best to shower every second or third day, and that every day is excessive for whatever reason. I was raised to think that the average person would shower/bathe daily, but his parents had always told him that they went days between cleaning. Rather than turn this into an argument over who was raised wrongly, I felt it was best to turn it over to you: the great citizens of the xkcd fora. Please tell me if I'm being valid in my claim or if I'm just a clean-obsessed freak so that I can finally sleep with this terrible weight off my mind.

I voted once a day but I might skip a few days if I'm not gonna socialise (usually when I'm hungover or during the exam period). Longest I've gone without washing is five days, but the longest I've gone without washing while not at a festival is three.

But yeah, washing every day is best for the simple reason that you smell if you don't. more than once a day, now that's excessive, but keeping clean is good for those who you hang around with and also makes you less prone to diseases (because bacteria likes sweat).

Daily usually, but some lazy Sundays when I'm not doing anything I'll just skip it. Sometimes when I do rigorous activity I will shower more than once a day, and if I'm going camping for a weekend I'll shower in the morning Friday, then another shower before I leave for the weekend.

When I was little I only had a shower every 2 days (it was longer when I'm in a cold country and don't sweat as much). As I do karate 4 times a week now and very hot walks one day a week it's now about 5 times a week. I generally wash my hair once-twice a week (unless I've been swimming, then I definitely wash it, ditto for shower after swimming). Thankfully my hair doesn't do that strange oily thing which I've been told happens to people with fine hair if they don't wash it for a day or two. It actually looks its best around day 2 or 3. I was raised in a bit of a strange family though.

Interestingly enough, I saw a Horizon episode on the BBC about allergies and one theory put forward for the rise in skin allergies is the excess use of showers and ex-foliation it gets rid of some of the protective top layer of dead skin.

I should probably mention: I have naturally oily hair, after a day I can start to shape it just from the oil, and after two or three days I can slick it back and have it stay pretty well without any gels or sprays (this is at camp though, so smoke or lake water might have something to do with it)

I play sports so it's sorta important to shower every day. I usually shower right when I get home or after dinner. Yuck. I can't stand being sweaty and disgusting. In the summer I'm a bit more lax when it comes to showering daily. Sometimes I shower at night or in the morning or whenever. Just when I feel icky. I like being clean but I can sometimes go a few more days without showering if I'm just gonna Hang around the house allday and I'm not going out.

Daily, sometimes if its a slow weekend I'll just skip it, but otherwise I do it every morning. If I don't my hair looks atrocious. I'm not capable of showing at night (that and I wake up with dog hair on me because my dog loves my bed)

Everyday. It's very important to me to have good hygiene but also because I'm a pretty greasy-skinned person. I get very gross if I am not showering every single day.

at least daily. I always shower in the morning, but also in the evening if I've been in the sea or doing sports.

I usually shower in the evenings. It's summertime now so sometimes twice a day (when I get back from work, before I got to bed or on weekends in the mornings and evenings). During the colder season, I might sometimes go a day without showering.

Regarding how healthy it is, I think it's pretty overrated. When I was in the military I went through times of showering only once a week or even less. Yes, it stinks, but I didn't feel any less healthy than usual.

It's a non-linear function to the temperate. I think it is (100-T)^0.5.

During the school year (ohshitthat'stomorrow) I make an effort to shower every day, or at least nights before school. During summer, though, it goes from every day during band camp (marching in 85 degree weather makes you real sweaty real fast) to every third day or so when I'm not having much human interaction.

That doesn't seem likely in either Celsius or Fahrenheit. If it's 0 degrees C that would mean you shower 10 times a day, if it's 32 degrees F that would me you show about eight time a day, and this is on really cold days.

When I was young, I showed about once a week. That stopped when I grew started stinking under the armpits.. I was force to do daily shows by my mother. Haven't stopped.

I generally take extra showers after swimming of if I feel particularly grimy. If i'm in a rush I occasionally go without a shower for a day, and it isn't the problem. (However, by the following night I tend to notice it).

I would say twice daily to once every two days is normal for adults, unless your bathing yourself in chemicals to mask body smell.

I've got to shower daily, otherwise my hair is impossible - I have long, wavy hair that goes down to mid-back, and while sleeping on it, it gets quite tangled.

Even in the field, I'll find a way to bathe at least every few days, even if it's in a river, abandoned cattle trough, etc.

I've showered almost every day since I can remember, mostly in the mornings now. Normally, I shower all the time after swimming in the ocean and some of the time after swimming in a pool. Even if I don't need to on the weekends, I do anyway for some reason.

I have this too, but if I was my hair without brushing it first, it just gets even more tangled (and brushing is impossible after sleeping on it while clean). My hair starts to get greasy after a week of non-washing though, and that makes brushing doable, so while I shower daily, my hair gets washed weekly (I put it in a bun for 6 days out of 7).

Usually every other day because I don't usually do all that much to make me sweat during the day, and I don't like washing my hair more than every other day.

But, if I do anything which makes me sweat I'll shower again. So, it's usually between every other day and every day.

Really, you don't need to shower every day, unless you sweat enough every day to make you stinky.

I shower daily for a few reasons. I need the time in the hot water to warm up and wake up in the morning, I sweat in my sleep so if I don't shower I feel kindof...dingy and grimy, and my hair is kindof oily and becomes unpleasant if I leave it for more than a day.

Usually it comes out to every 2 or 3 days.
If I'm doing homework or something, I might stretch it, but after a while I think I start to get allergic to my own dandruff or something weird... I can't explain it.

Interestingly, this is Monday morning, and I showered ... Saturday night, I think? I definitely showered Thursday night. I'll try to shower again before I go to class.

Every morning after coffee, possibly before breakfast. I need a shower to wake me up in the morning or I'll be groggy for hours.

Every 2 days, with the caveat that I will shower ASAP if I think I'm getting whiffy. I'm not a particularly active person, so that tends not to be a problem. Especially during winter months, showering every day seems excessive to me.

I usually only shower in the evenings. It means I can literally roll out of bed in the morning, get dressed, and go to work.

I find that, during the course of normal life, at home I shower just about every day. When I am working as a camp counselor in the wilderness, I sometimes see a week and a half between showers.

I usually shower daily.

Sometimes, if I'm at home and not going anywhere, I'll skip a day over the weekend.

Here at college though, where I'm in public every day, I shower every morning.

Monthly?! Seriously?

Weekends don't really count, as I'll probably shower once between friday night and sunday, but I certainly shower after jogging, which I try and do at least once every 2-3 days, so... I find this less about hygiene and more about just smelling bad/being presentable. I also find the amount of sex I have to be semi-proportional to the general state of cleanliness. There's an odd spike a bit lower on the spectrum with the whole 'sweaty after making things' and 'smelling of campfire', but those are isolated regions.

I think I may have put too many options for the rarely bathing end of the spectrum, unless 20 of you actually only shower monthly.

It completely depends on the weather and what I'm doing. If I've sweated, I'll have a bath in the evening (we don't have a shower at home). If I've driven to work, sat in an airconditioned office all day, driven home, cooked dinner, and not done much else all evening, I won't.

I've just returned from a music festival today and have a sunburnt nose so haven't really gotten around to the idea of showering yet because of the slight irritation that may come from glorious, hot, running water.

At this moment in time, it's been going on towards six days and I'll probably leave it 'til tomorrow. The usual is once every two or three days, depending upon activities, etc.

I aim for once a day, but unless I've been working out I don't usually get around to it that often. It's usually more like once every other day, or every three days. When my hair is any longer then about two inches it feels really gross to me and I HAVE to wash it every day, though.

I would be embarrassed to leave my house if I hadn't showered earlier in the day. This is probably somewhat of a personal pet peeve, however.

I don't sweat much in my sleep so, if I'm not particularly active, I can usually shower every other day without problems. I still shower more frequently than that, mainly for the sake of my hair, which is long and thin and isn't always presentable on day 2.

I usually shower once a day. On weekends it could be every other day or twice a day, depending on if I'm trying to get back on showering at night or not.

I can't imagine not showering for a month. I feel gross after two days.
