I'm well aware of the Game. It's just that we, as xkcdians, have collectively won it. We're free. Reminding us of that doesn't seem to be a particularly nefarious thing to do.

In my experience, making people lose twenty dollars and my self respect (see, according to the wikia, you cant actually WIN the game, and instead you lose) tends to be sort of an antagonizing move.

Some people just really hate losing.

I just think a game that has no win condition, doesn't end when you lose, and illogically claims that everyone who knows about it has to play it even if they don't want to, is...kind of dumb. I mean, how is "Everybody in the world who knows about The Game is playing The Game" a legitimate rule? It doesn't even have a name, it's just "The Game." All games are games. Next they'll be saying all games are The Game.

It hurts and I'm hoping I didn't do anything wrong and that this is just regular after-workout-ouchies.

How would you go by creating a board game about evolution (without it being about ID instead, like Spore was)?

roll half a dozen D20 after each move, and consult an gratuitously complex table using those rolls to determine any changes. Of the 100 or so results, only 3 will be beneficial, and 17 detrimental. The rest do next to nothing.

Thinking aloud: some form of stats-based battle mechanic, with lots of rock-paper-scissors mechanics... stat A beats stat B beats stat C beats stat A... and some stats are strong against an all-rounder, some are weak. That sort of thing. So no one unit will be the strongest, there's always room to improve. Each player rolls up several units, and they battle it out. On each turn, or every few turns, or such, depending on how fast the game actually plays, each player picks one of their surviving units at random, and gets a clone of that unit, with its stats modified at random... say, roll a d4 for each stat, if you get a 1 subtract a point, if you get a 4 add a point.

I have no idea how the actual battle would work, I haven't played many of these combat-style board-type games... but with enough twerking, there should still be enough player activity there to count as a game... but all the actual mutating is still entirely random. And the rock-paper-scissors stuff should ensure that there's always something good to select for. And if games start lasting long enough, and the stats are all balanced well, you could start to see emergent properties on the units... ones that are best at surviving against your opponent's units, and your opponent's tactics, will be the ones that survive to get cloned.

Maybe have a setup which doesn't require killing off all your opponent's units to win... like, capture the flag, or something... and then let the players keep their units from one game to the next... just to cram some long-term evolution in there.

[...] and that was the 47th time I ate a ham sandwich.

The 48th time was a Tuesday. I remember it was a Tuesday because the 215 bus was driving past at the time, and that bus only takes this road on Tuesdays. I'd just finished the morning's tasks of putting paper files inside other, slightly larger paper files, and then placing the resulting files in the filing cabinet. There were 142 files I had to sort that morning, but I managed to get through them all in time for lunch. I went across the road to the sandwich store, pausing before crossing to allow the 215 bus to pass, which, as I mentioned, reminded me that it was Tuesday. After thinking about what type of sandwich I wanted for lunch, I decided on the ham sandwich.

The sandwich itself was OK, no better or worse than the average ham sandwich usually is, which is one of the useful things about ham sandwiches, as I've gone into at length already in the description of my 26th ham sandwich. Consistency. Any ham sandwich is about as good as any other. And this one was no different. After eating it, I returned to work, satisfied that my hunger would be sated for enough time to complete the day's tasks. And that was the 48th time I ate a ham sandwich.

The 49th time was [...]
