On another note, I'm looking to do some reworking of the speech bubbles and font - does anyone have any suggestions? How do you feel about the way I'm currently doing them? Does it work?

I think the way it's currently done is just fine.. you can always try out new styles though and post them to see what others think

Okay, thanks - some people have taken issue with the speech bubbles having straight sides, and with the straight pieces connecting multi-part bubbles. And some people hate the font. I don't mind either, but I'm willing to try to make them better.

Yeah, I can see why they wouldn't like the rectangular bubbles instead of round bubbles. If I changed the bubbles, I'd go for elliptical bubbles. The font is probably getting complaints because it looks italicized, which is not as easy to read.

The main reason why I went with rounded rectangles is that they make better use of space, with less dead spots. But I agree that they aren't a perfect solution. And as for the font: I never realized how hard it was to find a good comic font until I actually had to. Most of them are only good for effects or little spurts here and there.

Are my letters too big? Big enough? If I went with a lighter font, could I shrink the letters a bit and change the bubble shape and make things more legible? Or would that make it worse. I've seen some comics where the speech is difficult to read (too small, usually) and it's a huge turn-off.

I just love that nugget. And the thought of the nugget being *harvested* from Mr. Stinky was something I found disturbing and...well, just plain wrong. I think that's why I went with it.

I don't know if this is a comic that everyone gets, but in my opinion you are hitting your intended type of humor spot on every time and presenting it with clean and bright art. Personally I am quite amused with each installment. I think you're on the road to success with this comic.

Hey, thanks guys - I feel like things are settling into a nice, consistent "groove," and I'm happy with the direction the strip is going. I do think it's either a "like it or you don't" thing, though, because in other forums (the Penny Arcade one especially) I've gotten no end of "this isn't even remotely funny, and nothing is working" responses. I think it really depends on the audience.

Good point. Forums can be weird like that, though - I had some people on the Cyanide and Happiness comic tell me "this sucks worse than C&H." But FMAF is definitely a niche thing. That's why, even though people have told me to give it up and do something else, I'm standing my ground.

I do believe you are getting a bit better with the jokes... then again the more you practice your craft, the better you get at it (The latest block it is one you might find particularly close to your gags).

That reminds me: I think your art style really contributes something to the comic and the jokes. The way Flying Man is always giving us that creepy smile and stinky is always just... well himself lol

I've had some people (quite a few, actually) suggest I incorporate many expressions, and that the smile does nothing for the jokes. But I'm torn, because I think the smile is key.

Hey, it's your webcomic, do what you think is right. If you think the smile is key, then it's key. You'll eventually gain readers that agree that the smile is key, and you'll be better for it. Also consider that if you change it, some people might actually get upset because Flying Man is supposed to smile at all times! Personally I like him always smiling, it's part of what makes the comic so bright, bubbly, and fun.

Although maybe 1 in every 100 comics you can bring up something extremely dramatic or something else weird and maybe have him not smiling.. but even then idk

His expression will occasionally change for a frame, but that will be quite rare. He's just a happy guy, and that's the way I'd like to keep him.
