Migrating Forums

Postby davean » Mon Dec 21, 2009 2:35 am UTC

I'll be moving the forums between machines tonight.
At some point the forums should magically roll back a few minutes for you.

This should solve a decent number of the recent issues.

And ... done?

Plenty of stuff broke and needs to be corrected I'm sure (I know a number of things that I didn't plan to have working yet).

Please report any issues.

Also, the link to the comic at the top seems to be broken, and I had a random indent partway down the topic list right after the update, though that was probably a single time issue. Using echo, by the way.

I think the "magical rollback" caused FG to do the Time Warp or something.
In a couple of threads I just posted in, a couple of posts popped out of existence, and the threads all jumped back to previous page positions, like they had never been bumped. The only other forum I looked at recently was FaiD, and nothing changed there.
I don't know if this has something to do with the move, or if it's on my end or what, but it seems to have happened around the move time.

This is in General and Linguistics too.

And the forum no longer prevents me from rapid posting, as evidenced in the rant thread.

The "unread posts" feature is giving me all kinds of weirdness. Sometimes a topic I've already read will show up in orange and work normally, but other times it will show up orange in spite of having no new posts, and clicking the little orange page icon takes me to the first post of the thread. Other read topics appear to be staying read, and some topics that have had this problem have remained marked read upon other views.

As long as the almighty creator is on, I have a humble suggestion.*
Add a "return to the forum last visited" link to the spam report thank you and already reported pages, in addition to the "return to the thread last visited" option. Not an issue, I guess, but an optimization.

*disclaimer: I have no clue how hard and/or time consuming this may be, and if it is total bollocks, please treat it as such.

Some attachments (for example, in this thread) are unshowable, and I believe it occurred in conjunction with the avatar trouble. At least, that was what I was told. Are they retrievable, or lost forever?

I'm seeing broken avatars for (to use examples already in this thread) davean, poxic, Vohu Manah, and skeptical scientist. That's after clearing my cache too, just in case. The others's avatars do show up for me, though.

Edit: heh, and myself too. Do we need to reupload them?

I noticed that too. I assume we have to re-upload them, and unfortunately I'm in Maui and don't have a copy of my avatar on my laptop (let alone the xmas version!)

I don't know if this has anything to do with the change, but this particular thread (and only this one) keeps appearing as "unread" but when clicking the "vew unread messages" for it it just gives the thread itself, with no new messages at all.

I seem to be experiencing the same problem.

Edit: Some of the search results seem to be a little off too, for example searching "ThickNavyRain" returns with only one result instead of the dozens it used to return with. The same thing happens for lots of other search items.

It's this way for me too, but view new posts link works. I'm not even sure what is the difference between those two.

Maybe there is still some indexing or something going on and only part of the messages can be found until it is ready?

This topic seems to be under Board index » High Culture » Food according the breadcrumb trail. Hopefully that's not a sign of something being wrong.

Since you wanted issues reported, I think this goes here. Avatars are working (well except for those who need to re-upload theirs) but the smilies still are not all showing: in particular: :D :) :( :o :?
And the others are...the funky shaped ones now not the rounded faces. (I did clear cache/cookies. Prosilver Left. Forums.)

If I view this thread, it'll be marked read like it should. But if any new posts are made, the entire thread will be marked unread instead of just the new posts.

I seem to be getting the opposite effect: The thread appears completely unread again until a post is made, at which points links will take me directly to the new post.

Edit: I recall having this problem when moving one of my own boards, and that I had to go nuclear and just mark the entire forum read. I'll see if doing the same thing here fixes it.

Did you click on this thread from FaiD? Global announcements seem to think that they are part of whatever subforum you click on them from, so if it was through FaiD, it might think that you have no edit powers. Try clicking on it from General or something.
