Alright guys, I have a sharing/network problem. Let me know if you can think of any solution...
In preparation for going back to school, I resurrected an oldish (circa 2001) pc and installed xp media center on it. Essentially, I am using this computer as a pool for all my (and my roommate's) music--the computer sits, plugged in, but with no monitor/keyboard/mouse. Audio out goes to our stereo, and network cable is plugged in appropriately. Both of our laptops and the pc with the music on it are running ultravnc, so our laptops are essentially remote controls for a giant virtual jukebox.
Anyway, I can get the computer to show up on the network (it is in our Workgroup), and I have set a folder on the computer named "Shared Music." The sharing and permissions are set to let everyone have full access, and I can view the contents of the folder just fine. The problem arises when I want to add music to the folder. I get a read/write not allowed-type error. So i checked the folder properties and cleared the green square for Read-Only. I hit apply, then OK, and then bring the properties back up to check the status, and the Read Only box has filled itself in again. No matter what I do, it reverts to Read Only, and I can't figure out why. Suggestions?
