Happy New Year to all XKCD people

Postby manmantong2000 » Thu Dec 31, 2009 4:55 pm UTC

It is the year of 2010 coming up, and although we should all been dead 10 years ago, it seem like the next "we are gonna die" date is 2012. Anyway...

Is kinda lame, but I thought someone in this forum has to start a thread and ask everyone to post one of their New Year resolution. I will start my with this: getting into the government internship, get done with it and graduate soon.

Also hoping I could make a Heron fourtain out of the soda cans produced from last night's gathering over the break.

Resolution:
Get a collar and begin wearing it. Make sure it does NOT look like a black leather BDSM collar.

Also:
Do your damn homework and turn it in on time.

Take more Murphy-damned risks, for better or for worse, and do more to save the world.

Happy New Year XKCDians. Let's see if we can make the world of the 2010s an even stranger place.

Enjoy life more and do something different (aka stay away from the Internet).

Also, read at least twelve [fiction] books for fun, yet keep up studies.

I had a feeling that you are part of the family of furry subculture.
I never been to a convention and wish to go to one, maybe I should add that to my resolution too.

I didn't know such thing exist until you mention it
Sometime I had that idea, but not up to the point of making a blag out of it
Maybe I should reconsider before I post some of the stick figure comic I made?

How boring. My collar is black leather, has a D-ring, a locking buckle, and a tag specifying my fursona name, species, my Master's name, and what should be done to me if I am lost. Much more fun. :P

Resolutions:
1: Don't die. My plan has been going well so far, and if I'll be quite happy if I can keep it up throughout 2010.
2: Make the world a weirder, and awesomer, place.
3: Be able to jump off of something 7+ feet off the ground. Maybe even learn some Parkour.

Happy new year xkcdians, and happy new decade too.
I'm not one for New Year's Resolutions really. I'm a middle-of-the-road enough person; I don't smoke, drink to excess, or fail catastrophically in my studies, so any rezzes I make sound weak and are nothing more than "Egh, maybe try a little harder". Anyhow, here's to twenty-ten!
*quaffs a flute of champagne and collapses to bed in the corner*

And here's a small message of support to Imeme and his collar-scouting frivolities.

1. Get a car worth having. [One that runs would be a start]
2. Start college with at least 4 scholarships
3. Finish my last semester of high school with a +3.0 gpa
4. Be able to bench 150lbs by the time I leave for college
5. Get a job over the summer
6. Continue to draw throughout the year

Trying to be reasonable when saying things you're going to do is kinda hard. Those are most of my goals for 2010 though.

It's weird that we celebrate the end of the calendar year as a new year. Doesn't the new year start on your birthday for you?

1. Acquire a better work ethic
2. Read more regularly
3. Be emotionally honest with the people I care about
4. Practice my violin more
5. Get used to using the GIMP
6. Be a bit less of a vitriolic
7. Be a bit more straightforward when dealing with others

...

One more.

8. Try not to get discouraged by everything I need to do
Significantly less weird than I used to be. Still pretty weird.

Resolutions:

Save up money to buy a house, or else at least be able to move back out on my own.

Pay off car.

Take car in and have it thoroughly inspected, get anything that needs to be done, done.

Not to give two shits about what people think of me at work.

Keep room clean more often.

Read some of the books I've bought over the last couple of years, but never cracked open.

Upgrade computer.

2009 has just, well, sucked. That's putting it lightly. Seems like Murphy had a banner year in 2009, especially at my work. If it wasn't one thing, it was three others. Not only was it all the shit going on at work, especially within the last couple of months, but also there was my wreck, us having to have one of the cats euthanized, the economy going to shit, heavy rains (we needed the rain, but DAMN...), more celebrity deaths than usual, some highly unexpected (Michael Jackson, Billy Mays, and Brittney Murphy), among other fuck-ups for the year.

New Year Resolutions:
Remember that the new decade starts in 2011 (because we started at year one)
Remember to celebrate the new year when we actually finish our revolution around the sun (got to figure out when that is...anyone know if UTC is accurate based on our revolution around the sun???)
Remember that these goddam resolutions never happen so I should start listing the opposite of what I want (that works, right?)
I feel like I should end this post with something about last year.
last year I tried to resolve to not write any more resolutions for the reason listed in resolution 3...see where that got me.

The astronomical buzzword for this sort of thing is "sidereal".

Anyway, I resolve to actually figure out why I'm doing any of the things I'm doing instead of just doing what I've always been doing.

Relatedly, I resolve to try to be less confusing. Really.

I should probably be posting this in Fit Club, but athletic NYRs are a cliché, and this thread has a good thing going.

Physically I want to achieve the ability to:
Bench 200lbs
Do 100 push-ups
Do 200 sit-ups
Consistently and vaguely competently pull off a butterfly kick
Take up another martial art, something deliberately as different as possible from anything else I've tried

None of these are drastically beyond my reach; the only contingent factor is me carrying out my most important resolution, that being to give more of a damn about life in general.

Half of this stuff probably isn't going to happen, but screw it:

1. Keep up a 4.1 gpa
2. Try not to strangle teachers and do well in AP classes and on the tests
3. Get to deputy black belt?
4. Lose weight
5. Write more
6. Check out scholarships/colleges
7. Socialize more
8. Survive

Things to do!
  • Stay alive
  • Be awesome
  • Stop being fat
  • Try to do well in school or something
  • Work on that "Mad Scientist" career
  • Come out! To someone! Anyone! Maybe get a boyfriend? That'd be cool.
  • Finally learn to say "fuck you" to society and do whatever the hell I want without worrying about what people will think.
  • Promise to keep all these and then forget about them by January 2nd (one I know I can keep)
Let's not screw up 2010, okay Me? WE CAN DO THIS!
Look at me still talking when there's SCIENCE to do!

Well, I wasn't going to make NYRs, but this thread seems to have a good vibe, so why the hell not.

1. Socialize more.
2. Draw more often and improve to the point that by the end of 2010 I'll feel comfortable starting the webcomic that's been bouncing around in my head for 2 years.
3. Read more books.
4. Write more often (not just winning NaNoWriMo again, but writing other things besides NaNos).
5. Come out to someone at college about being heteroflexible/bi. (Anyone. The only two people that know right now are a couple hundred and a few thousand miles away).
6. Try to integrate more into the community here, instead of just going on posting sprees every once in a while.
7. Finally get more physically fit. (Starting a thread in the Fit Club subforum later today).
8. Get a games industry internship for this summer, so I don't end up just wasting my time sitting around my house.
9. Try to be myself (and be more open) more.

Hah, that was more that I was expecting. Happy New Year's everybody!

This thread made me look at collarfactory.com again, and now I want to buy one, considering they're actually cheaper than I remembered. I'll probably wait on it until September, though. (Because then I'll have my own room and can wear it around more often.)

Also, I realized by posting all this I may have saved manmantong2000 some time in his quest. *waves sheepishly*

Okay, I'm not going to make any lofty resolutions I truly can't live up to, but I'm going to make serious efforts not to feel intimidated or depressed when I look at everything I have to do. It's time to take things step by step, and work to make my life better. :)

Mine:

1. Broaden my musical horizons.
2. Stop procrastinating.
3. Win NaNoWriMo (shame) and write more in general.
4. Make earrings out of the pair of Furby eyes I have floating around.

Hmm I think my resolution is to make some more friends and be more active up at school. Last semester really sucked in this department, but my heavy workload and job sort of didn't help.

Also, I resolve to get drunk. Really, really drunk. I say this because it's one resolution that will not be difficult to accomplish.
