Fun network problem

Postby saxmaniac1987 » Wed Jul 18, 2007 4:18 pm UTC

Alright guys, I have a sharing/network problem. Let me know if you can think of any solution...

In preparation for going back to school, I resurrected an oldish (circa 2001) pc and installed xp media center on it. Essentially, I am using this computer as a pool for all my (and my roommate's) music--the computer sits, plugged in, but with no monitor/keyboard/mouse. Audio out goes to our stereo, and network cable is plugged in appropriately. Both of our laptops and the pc with the music on it are running ultravnc, so our laptops are essentially remote controls for a giant virtual jukebox.

Anyway, I can get the computer to show up on the network (it is in our Workgroup), and I have set a folder on the computer named "Shared Music." The sharing and permissions are set to let everyone have full access, and I can view the contents of the folder just fine. The problem arises when I want to add music to the folder. I get a read/write not allowed-type error. So i checked the folder properties and cleared the green square for Read-Only. I hit apply, then OK, and then bring the properties back up to check the status, and the Read Only box has filled itself in again. No matter what I do, it reverts to Read Only, and I can't figure out why. Suggestions?

is the music playing, or are any files in use(in the shared folder) when you're trying to change the properties?

I suggest remedial preschool. In addition to learning to play nice with everyone's toys, sit in on a few seminars on putting things back where they belong and advanced crayon eating.

Well, Linux.

If you don't want that, you could try making sure that you have write access to the parent folder of your Shared Music folder. I don't actually know if thats a problem or not, but it seems like the sort of thing that Windows might get grumpy about. Also, make sure you have administrator rights. That usually isn't a problem on Windows, but maybe Media Center is special?

Fuck that. Linux.

hah. I've considered the linux road, but have 0 knowledge about it, and don't know how that would work. The parent folder has the same problem as the Shared Music folder. It won't stay un-read-only.

Try restarting from zero with a different folder. Create a folder "Bob" than anyone can read/write, then share it with one user. Can that user add files? Add everyone else to the new folder. Can they add files?

Now, rename the old Shared Music folder to Shared Music.old. Rename Bob to Shared Music. Can you still add files to Bob/Shared Music?

Copy the contents of Shared Music.old to Shared Music. Can you still add files to Shared Music?

Start up the music-player. Can you still add files to Shared Music?

...

Does your OS log permission changes?

I think I figured it out. I had the Shared Music folder and its parent folder set for sharing, but for some reason only the parent folder had the correct permissions set up. I'll try to use it more and see what happens. thanks, though
