Fan Fiction?

Postby Rakarei » Tue Jan 12, 2010 1:18 am UTC

Is XKCD fan fiction ok? Will I get in trouble for using the characters? Just wondering before I get too into what I'm doing.

I can see people are viewing this and not answering my question. I'm going to take that as a yes and continue with my fan fiction.

Or they don't know and are finding out, or they don't know and don't care or they do know and don't care.
You waited about 5 minutes for somebody to reply and then made your mind up?
I don't think you cared that much anyway, did you?
To answer your question; as far as I know as long as you do not profit from what you create you should be fine.

You're going to want to at least contact a mod about it, and give an adequete time frame for a response. There's sometimes copyright issues- and, while I really doubt Munroe is going to mind- it's good to use proper etiquette and bear in mind that this is a large fora thing. Like Deity said, some people will look and won't know/won't care/don't have the actual ability to grant permission (which is something that only the creator can do).

Edit: Well- considering how effective Rule 34 and 36 are- I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Actual XKCD fanfics :

And, this one is kind of an xkcd fic?

And a writer that seems to do a lot of Xkcd themed fic: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/227988/BluWine

They're all safe for work (I think)

xkcd is licenced under Creative Commons (would you like to know more?). Bottom line: fanfic is not prohibited but it'd be nice if you credited the characters you use back to Randall. Shoot him an email if you want to make sure though, he doesn't frequent the forums often.

I always rage about the IP holders that actively seek to shut down fanfic writers. It doesn't seem to happen so much anymore, but back about ten years ago, folks were zealous about it. I've known and participated in fanfic sites that were so afraid of being shut down that they laid down strict guidelines about not protraying the characters in a negative light, going so far as to prohibit same-sex or inter-species pairings. I don't know if you've read much sf/f fanfic, but that covers pretty much most of it.

Now I'm honestly curious as to what kind of fanfiction can be written from xkcd. I'm thinking of some goofy Apocalypse Now parody.

You don't want to KNOW what they do with scones...

If you look at the bottom of the XKCD page, you'll see something:

Image
XKCD is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial license. That means you're permitted to create derivative works (such as fan fiction), so long as
1) You give credit to Randall Munroe
2) You do not use it for commercial purposes.

I have the feeling that that would end badly.
"That isn't a scone."
"Are you sure?" Chomp
"AAAAAAA!!!"
I knew that we had suffered each as other,
And could have grasped your hand and cried, "My brother!"

I'm not sure what this means. The slightly worse thread?
