Top 10 artists... I'm more of a song by song kind of guy, but I guess this will do:

1: Linkin Park
2: The Who
3/4: System of a Down & Journey (Can't decide)
5: Beethoven
6: Smashing Pumpkins
7: The Beatles
8: Breaking Benjamin
9: Green Day
10: Muse

Way harder to choose artists than it is to choose songs :?

And I can't believe Pink Floyd aren't on there. I must have only listened to them on my mp3 player where I'm not getting this information from.

Hmm:

Radiohead
Movits!
Tool
Cage The Elephant
Alice in Chains
Led Zeppelin
System of a Down
CCR
The Beatles
Johnny Cash

A few of those just barely made the list (they're tied with some others in my mind). Also there's maybe 5 bands in the world whose songs I actually like all of. In all I'd say I have about 15 favorite artists/bands.

Jimmy Eat World,
The Megas,
Coldplay,
Tailor Swift,
and Brad Paisley

Plus all the miscellaneous songs I've heard but never bother to find their artist or name.

I would say:

1. Mozart
2. Beethoven
3. J.S. Bach
4. The Beatles
5. The Beach Boys
6. Focus
7. Handel
8. Haydn
9. Miles Davis
10. Simon and Garfunkel

A highly nerdy note: There's an ambiguity in lists like this as to whether one is talking about the average quality or the integrated quality of an artist (or some combination of the two). For example, in my opinion Pink Floyd has made a lot of very good music over the years, so their integrated quality is rather high. But that good music is spread over a large number of albums, some of which I don't care for at all, so their average quality is significantly lower. Similarly, the Beach Boys' average quality is brought way down by a lot of fairly abysmal stuff from the '70s and '80s. On the other hand, a group like Blind Faith, who only made one album, has a much higher average quality than Pink Floyd or the Beach Boys (because that one album is excellent), but a much lower integrated quality (because, after all, it's only one album). My list is something of a compromise between these two metrics.

3. Dinosaur Jr.
4. Talk Talk
5. The Pixies
6. Spoon
7. Joanna Newsom
8. Modest Mouse
9. The Hold Steady

Only 10?! This could take a while to narrow down...

I can't really rank these beyond perhaps the first and second...and it's subject to change rather frequently.

1. Metallica
2. Audioslave (I quite like them, though I only started listening to them recently)
Rush
The White Stripes
The Beatles
Queen
Theory of a Deadman
Guns n Roses
Oh, Sleeper
Soundgarden

Ayreon
Apocalyptica
Austrian Death Machine
CCR
Led Zeppelin
Lynyrd
Black Sabbath

5. Hopesfall (old stuff)
6. Imogen Heap

Limiting it to 10 is kind of hard, and it changes somewhat frequently, 5 years ago, Imogen Heap, Tegan & Sara, and The Glitch Mob wouldn't have been on this list. My top 3 isn't changing (probably ever), and the next 2 after that probably aren't any time soon.

3. Queen
4. Ария
5. Billy Talent
6. Dimmu Borgir

Hmm... We can to complete some interesting sociological work! As you all can see, very often people favorite artists are Queen, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and other "old-school" bands! I can put all these information in a stats, and we'll see - who are the best in common opinion.

Top ten based on my liking, not my thoughts on quality. They are in no specific order.

The Clash
Owen Pallett
Arcade Fire
The Knife
Talking Heads
David Bowie
Patti Smith
Public Enemy
Sonic Youth
Kraftwerk

Huh. Never did this thread, apparently. Well, I'll try to take an overall kind of view instead of right now, though that's always hard.

Vienna Teng
Thea Gilmore
Ego Likeness
Depeche Mode
VNV Nation
Peter Gabriel
Lacuna Coil
Massive Attack
Akhenaton
Assemblage 23

I've only seen half that list in concert. I sure would like to improve that in the future...
