The "How Have I Never Noticed That Before?" thread

Postby RoadieRich » Thu Mar 11, 2010 6:10 pm UTC

It's obvious when you know it's there: Things like the arrow in the FedEx logo:
Spoiler:
Look between the 'E' and the 'x':

Or the fact that Grouch Marx's quote "Time flies like an arrow; Fruit flies like a banana," can be read as "fruit flies like a banana [if you throw it]", or alternatively, "fruit flies like [to eat] a banana".

Post your examples!

Please to google "Negative space logos"

You'll see examples of that kind of thing all over. From what I've seen of reading over Jacque's shoulder at some of the design blogs he keeps up with, it's getting to be kind of a trend. (And yes, I see the bear)

I don't quite understand the last one. Did Jobs and Woz intend for that, or are you noticing something that isn't there?

My one is a little specific, but I'd been going to Plastic People nightclub in London for a few years before I realised it was in the basement, not the first floor.

I know, right? I mean, I watched the Turtles and Fresh Prince. They were contemporaries. James didn't even really disguise his voice in any way, and looking back, when he's yelling at Carlton and Will, it sounds like Shredder.

Yet I never put 2 and 2 together. Not until goddamn Hey Ash Whatcha Podcasting of all things pointed it out to me.

there's a site called shitbrix.com (NSFW)
I'm not making it a link because some of it is NSFW, but it was too relevant to not post.

The forum automatically made it a link on the first try, so I fixed it.

After seeing this thread, I saw a FedEx truck on the highway and looked specifically for the arrow. I could swear that the middle line in the letter "E" was a bit shorter, so the arrow bled into the background. It was all somewhat surreal.

I had a similar experience with Get Smart and Inspector Gadget... and Don Adams was even playing basically the same character in both (I think I read somewhere that the latter was at least inspired by the former?)... but even though I watched both at around the same time in my childhood, I still never spotted it until I happened to spot the name in the credits one day, long after I stopped following either show.

A bit obscure but as I am a great fan, The Hunting of the Snark has the following stanza in the first fit:

http://www.literature.org/authors/carro ... index.html

Just the place for a Snark!" the Bellman cried,
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.

"Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What i tell you three times is true."

But later in the fifth fit the nameless man is quoted as saying:

'Tis the voice of the Jubjub!" he suddenly cried.
(This man, that they used to call "Dunce.")
"As the Bellman would tell you," he added with pride,
"I have uttered that sentiment once.

"'Tis the note of the Jubjub! Keep count, I entreat;
You will find I have told it you twice.
'Tis the song of the Jubjub! The proof is complete,
If only I've stated it thrice."

Where each statement is different: "Tis the voice/note/song of the Jubjub" - so it's not true by the Bellman's law of saying it three times. It may mean something or maybe not!
