Archer (TV Series) is probably the best thing I have ever...

Postby MasterOfAll » Fri Sep 18, 2009 7:01 am UTC

Did anyone else catch the pilot of Archer on FX tonight? I just happened upon it while flipping channels, but honestly, Archer is probably the best thing I have ever stumbled across on TV.

It was absolutely brilliant comedy. If the rest of the show can live up to the high standard set by the pilot, this honestly could become the greatest animated show of all time.

Here's the link to the Wikipedia page and to a 2 minute clip from the show. Since the rest of the series won't be shown until January, I wouldn't be too surprised if the entire pilot shows up somewhere on the web sometime soon.

It's basically a cross between Arrested Development, and Venture Bros. This show can do no wrong. The pilot was quite possibly one of the funniest things i have ever seen.

I haven't heard of it until now, but you just sold me on it.

The main character is voice acted by the coach for "Home Movies," and it actually bothered me quite a bit. It's a petty reason to not like a show, but there's no accounting for taste.

The clip was funny, and I like H. Jon Benjamin (Coach McGuirk in Home Movies and the main guy in Archer) and Jessica Walter was funny in Arrested Development, so those are plusses, but I really dislike what the creator has done before (Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo). So I'm on the fence about this at the moment.

well they showed the 1st ep after the its always sunny premiere. it seems to be about a self-absorbed cute but dumb spy whose mom runs the spy organization. its the kind of show id expect on adult swim.
i kind of wanted an hour of its always sunny.

Off topic, but I really don't like "always sunny in Philadelphia." There's no one to play the straight man, they're all trying to outdo each other.

Has anyone else been keeping up with this show? I think the new episodeis even better than the first.

I was just about to come here and create this topic.

I didn't see the Pilot, but I watched the first few episodes that aired about a week ago and I'm watching it now. It appears very funny. Very worth watching... At times it seems like it *should* suck, yet it doesn't! It's purely amazing and hilarious.

I am not sure why that sneak preview back in September was the 2nd episode, but I have now also watched the 1st and 3rd episodes. And, while they have not been quite as awesome as the sneak preview episode (maybe just because my expectations were set so high) they still have been damn hilarious.

Good show. Will watch again. Am recommending to friends.

Yayyy Netflix availability makes me happy. Wait, instant or disk?

Regarding the Arrested Development vibe (I'm not sure how much of that is from the writing and how much of it just radiates from Jessica Walter)-- did anyone else recognize the voice of Cheryl (the kinky receptionist/secretary/whatever) as Judy Greer (Kitty)?

instant and no i did not realize. wow when I rewatch its going to have a different feel because of Kitty. The cyril/cheryl story line wasn't my favorite. i just like archer being an idiot.

i watched the first season of frisky dingo because of this and i think archer is much better so far.

Yeah, I rented Frisky Dingo a while back and returned it after watching one episode... Maybe would be enjoyable if you got really, really stoned first. Maybe.

Huh? It's exactly the same kinds of jokes as Archer (almost the same show, really), just less accessible because it's got more callbacks than any other show ever.

We just spent all these posts talking about how great Arrested Development was, and then we condemn Frisky Dingo for having too much self-reference? Both shows relied heavily on it, and were funny as shit. Arrested Development more so, but, i mean, c'mon. It's Arrested Development.

Again, huh? I find Frisky Dingo to be far funnier than Archer for exactly that reason, but having a lot of self-reference makes it difficult to start anywhere but the beginning. Less accessible.

I tend to agree with Kag there. Archer is good, but I do think Frisky Dingo is better... but I also see them as two different entities. Archer is a show, with 22 minute (plus commercials!) episodes. Frisky Dingo is a collection of two films of 140ish minute lengths, because the 11 minute segments don't really make a lot of sense on their own.

Was that directed at me? Because i think i got turned around somewhere. I was trying to say it was unfair to call Frisky Dingo inaccessible while praising Arrested Development, and apparently got turned around as far as who was saying which. My bad, i guess.

I haven't yet decided whether i like Archer or Frisky Dingo better. My girlfriend loves Archer and loathes Frisky Dingo, so i'm currently leaning toward the opposite of her, but that might just be because i'm an awful boyfriend.

maybe ill watch the second season like its a movie. because the breaks every ten minutes or so may have affected my opinion of the show.

Maybe I would have enjoyed Frisky Dingo if I had watched a little more of it... I wasn't that into Archer till I'd watched several episodes.
