Edit: I don't really mean modern music. I mean things like Led Zepplin, Eric Clapton, that sort of musical generation. I guess that is like 40 years old by now.

the band i recommend that you all should check out is 'godspeed you! black emperor'. their songs are usually around the 20 minute mark, and i find them really passionate and enveloping. It's the kind of music you would listen to at night while laying in bed thinking about shit

Well, if you're just dipping your feet into the web of connections swirling around Mike Patton (Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Peeping Tom, Fantomas, Maldoror, etc), this may not be for you...

But if you like avant garde rock/metal I strongly recommend Secret Chiefs 3. They're a project of Trey Spraunce (ex-Mr. Bungle and all-around nice guy). I don't think they'll ever "make it big" but they're one of the better shows I've ever been to. It is kind of like Godspeed You Black Emperor on fast forward with a rhythm section that was brought up on metal.

An easy introduction to their sound would be their cover of Halloween, available on a YouTube near you. =D

After Midnight Project. Great and unique vocals (well, unique to anything I've heard before), subtle guitar tweaks that just make a song, nice beats, lyrics that one can relate to but are also still unique topics and very often poetic, and lots of emotion. A lot of their songs also reach the high point very well (especially in "The Becoming") where it's just like, "Fuck yeah! I'm pumped!"

I'd say they're more on the heavier side of rock, mainly because the guitars tend to be overdriven and the drums driving, but the vocals and lyrics aren't angsty enough to be punk.

An Australian progressive rock/alternative rock band, often compared to The Mars Volta and others. They just released their first full album last year (having released one EP, or "albumette" as they call it, the year before) and it is amazing. All of the members are insanely talented at their instruments, and their songs all demonstrate incredible songwriting/arranging ability. They've been gaining in popularity pretty quickly but I still haven't seen any mention of them on this forum.

Los Campesinos!

They're a British indie pop band that is something just a few shades darker than twee. I still haven't posted enough to get linking privileges, but a quick YouTube search will direct you to most of their songs. Their lyrics can be pretty clever at times. All of their songs are really upbeat, even if only in tempo. They just make me want to get up and jump around~

Psoy Korolenko. Does folk-ish music (mostly Russian and Yiddish), sometimes combining elements from trance and techno. LOVES keyboard instruments. He sometimes does comedic songs too - he has once called "Rubber" which talks about how the words for "rubber", "eraser", "gum" and "condom" are the same in some languages.

At the time I had no idea who they were, I was there for the main act. But looking them up following the show, I think I liked them better live. A lot of bands are like that.

I love MSI. Personally though, I like their early work better for the most part. Tight and Alienating Our Audience era. That song is hip like badass though. Not that I particularly dislike any of their albums, I just have a hierarchy of what I like. ;p

I'd say try and give the band Beirut a shot. They're an indie American band heavily influenced by eastern European music. They're not gonna be for everybody but I'm sure some people will get as obsessed with them as I have.

One man I recommend, if you like Coffee Shop music, would be Bruddah Iz, or Israel Kamakawiwo'ole (Hawaiian ethnicity).
