I hate hate haaaaaate my job

Postby meatyochre » Tue Apr 06, 2010 12:09 am UTC

I work in a call center, have for over a year and a half now. We take calls, many times from irascible customers. I'm so tired of this. I hate my company, I hate the callers, hate my boss and my boss's boss, and it's making me hate my life! I have a wonderful boyfriend who is very supportive and lets me vent when I get home. But really, I'd like to have a job where I never ever have to deal with an outside customer again. I've done retail in the past, and this job is worse than retail, although it pays better. I don't have a degree, but I do have over 4 years of college under my belt. At the moment it's not feasible for me to continue working on my degree because I defaulted on student loans concurrently with filing bankruptcy (which of course doesn't discharge them).

Any suggestions? I kinda fell into this job, I'd never even heard of the place but a family member worked here. The job has changed MASSIVELY since I was initially hired. They've effectively doubled everyone's workload, froze new hires since I was employed (not a single new class since then and they used to hire every 3 months), and we are still having incredibly high turnover... so we have fewer and fewer people to take exponentially more calls. I like that I have a sit-down job, but that's the only aspect of working here that doesn't instantly fill me with alternating rage and dread.

More bitching under spoiler because I really need it:
Spoiler:
They took the empty cubicles from people who left the company and rented out the space to some random place. I don't even know who those people are and it makes me feel really insecure because we don't have locks on our desks. They outsourced a bit of our fax work to India, which made us fear for our jobs for a good 8ish months of the 19 I've been here, but then we took on double the amount of calls we previously had, as well as grunt data entry work for when the phones slow down at night (times when we used to be able to surf the internet or read a book). I feel like I've been robbed. The job description that I applied for no longer applies to my actual job. The entire management structure is continually changing. And this is a huge, 200 year old company. Our CEO jumped ship a year ago, and my department's head is bailing on us and taking a spot with another dept (don't blame the guy, I wish I could do that too).

I hope this was the right forum, I'm new here and I didn't see an "I hate my life, please help me improve it" category. If not, and someone wants to move it, feel free!

Start looking for a new job? Sounds like anything would be better than that.

I can merge this into the Rant Thread if you'd like.

Yeah I guess this is sufficiently ranty to fit there :) as long as it doesn't get lost in the shuffle!

And it's such a tough time to find a job. I wish this hadn't all happened just now (well, within the past few months I mean). I think a lot of other places may be similar though... no companies are wanting to hire now so they stretch their current employees so thin they eventually end up cracking.

I do appreciate the commiseration, but it would be nice if anyone can provide specific recommendations. Like I said, I never even heard of this job before I fell into it. I need inspiration!

I'm guessing you're not unionized - otherwise, I'd strongly suggest talking to your union rep about that fact that your job is no longer the one you were hired for.

Beyond that, I agree with lanicita - the best time to start job hunting is while you have a job, before you are either downsized or have to quit for your own mental health. Send resumes to anywhere and everywhere - from what you've said, though, I'd be iffy about applying within the company. If you can, start planning/working to cut expenses and save a little in case something comes up that pays less. If you have benefits with your current job, get the most use out of them now, as well. Things like that give you a bit more freedom in accepting possibly lower paying positions.

Basically, start quietly packing and heading for the door.

EDIT: Also, just knowing that you're looking for a job and taking action to get someplace better can make things a bit more bearable and a bit less bleak.

Wow, a year and a half in call service is a long time, I think. And it's definitely a tiring job. You should start going over classifieds relevant to your area, maybe you'll be surprised to see something that suits you. Sometimes even searching by itself can make you start feeling better. It's a bit hypocritical of me to say that, as someone who's also in a job they hate (though thankfully my direct boss is great), since I'm hardly looking for a new job. But I've got issues, hopefully you don't have issues. :) Good luck!

I'm pretty sure it's above average. I worked a few stints in call service (three different places, two out-bound, one in-bound) and only total a little over that. In all of three, it was almost uncommon for people to last more than a week. They're definitely awful jobs.

Go out with a bang.

I worked as a telemarkter in college trying to sell Sears vinyl siding over the phone.
Depressing and horrible beyond your wildest dreams.

I just started letting people hang up for any reason and made no effort to make any sells, just sat there killing time. This resulted in many trips to the bosses office where they would replay my phone calls and I would have to "explain myself". They still didnt' fire me... and I eventually quit... what you should do.

But I suggest being a sarcastic prick at least once.
There is that super famous one, on the net about a guy telling a customer to disconnect her computer, put it in the box, and send it back... because she is too dumb to own a computer.

My personal favorite one is:

Guy calls up saying the cup holder on his computer is broken, turns out it was the disk drive and he broke it by putting a cup in it.

My favorite is the guy who called tech support and during the course of the call, said "Shit, cup holder broke off, hang on"

..

Then had to spend the next 20 minutes explaining to the tech that No, not the CD-Rom, a Cup Holder he'd taped/bolted to the side of the tower fell off. Yes, really. No, Not the CD-ROM. Goddamn it, I'm a software tech and I'm not that stupid so please please can we get back to my hardware issue. NO, IT WASN'T THE CD-ROM TRAY.

If only that call had been recorded...

Haha, that's brilliant. I may have to pull this one out if I ever find myself having to call tech support instead of using the internet (once my own fiddling around proves fruitless, that is.)

That's the big question, isn't it? Is it tougher to be unemployed and searching for a job, or is it tougher to continue working where you are?

yeah unfortunately, I have no savings due to the bankruptcy and student loan defaulting thing. For the moment it's better to be employed and looking than it is to be unemployed and starving (since a voluntary jobquit prevents applying for food stamps for 3 months in my state)
